RACHEL MORIN: Maryland v Victor Martinez-Hernandez for murder of mom of 5 on hiking trail *TRIAL IN PROGRESS*

Seen a couple of brief things on this one. I'd lean to the bf mostly because his statements and behavior aren't adding up BUT it's hard to say. She apparently was in custody battles with three of her kids' dads. Maybe it bothered one of them when she announced she was in a relationship with this new guy. Hard to say.

It may deserve a thread, not that it merits it any more than any other but there is news on it at the moment pretty regularly and it is definitely a whodunit at this point.

STS is going to have on the father of I believe her oldest child. Just like many on YT they get the trust and appearance.
I was going to link it last night as it was upcoming tonight or tomorrow, can't recall, had no time to double check today and catching up with other. Worked til after 9 last night five days straight and had to work early this morn and go right back. And daughter's birthday and tired as heck went out with them to dinner, rare thing.
Anyhow, I can only guess daughter's dad wants to help and share what he knows of who Rachael was. That's shows a decency for what I think is an ex and whose daughter is missing mom.
Sorry that I can't recall the time or day. Today or tomorrow if I recall. Surviving the Survivor.

Family of Rachel Morin launches commercial campaign in hopes of finding killer

It's been nearly eight months since the body of Rachel Morin was discovered along the Ma & Pa Trail in Harford County.

Morin's killer is believed to still be on the loose, leaving her family desperate for answers.

On Wednesday the family launched a commercial-ad campaign in hopes of justice being served.

"In a strategic effort to reach a broad audience, the commercial will be launched on social media platforms in Bel Air, MD, Los Angeles, CA, and border towns along the US-Mexico border," said Morin Family attorney Randolph Rice, who hopes "the commercial will reach someone who has not yet seen the sketch or doorbell camera video in the hopes of finally bringing Rachel Morin's killer to justice."

ARREST!!! PC in first link below.

Very happy to hear they have an ARREST. Haven't watched the presser, no time so far but did read. Not ONE BIT surprised he is an illegal alien and is wanted for more. We already knew his DNA was a match to a home invasion in was it Cali? Now we get Guatemala, etc. Our country is FULL of criminals like this that are not from here. He sure also managed to travel from coast to coast in this country too didn't he... Let's just leave the borders open. Idiots. So many people and children are dead due to such.

Happy for the arrest though for her family.

Rachel Morin case: Suspect signed waiver authorizing extradition back to Maryland for prosecution

The suspect in the killing of Rachel Morin signed a waiver Monday authorizing Harford County law enforcement to extradite him from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was arrested Friday, to Maryland for prosecution. The extradition can take up to 10 days.

Once Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, 23, is in Harford County, prosecution will begin. Harford County State’s Attorney Allison Healey has said she will be leading the prosecution against Martinez-Hernandez.

The Tulsa County Clerk of the Court confirmed Monday that Martinez-Hernandez can either appoint an attorney or he will have one appointed to him. As of Monday, information on Martinez-Hernandez’s legal council is not available, according to the court.

Once Martinez-Herndandez’s extradition is complete, the charging documents pertaining to the case will be made public.

It's interesting to fathom an illegal alien can be part of a normal process of extradition and choices even though not a citizen of our country.

I'll bet the history on this is quite something if one went way back before total idiots ran our country. First, there wasn't the almost accepted flood of such then, they were sent back, couldn't cross, etc. it wasn't an open floodgate.

He would have very likely never been here to begin with.

People don't know the half of people like him who are in this country. Some don't anyhow. And the crimes they commit are OFTEN NOT in the news.

I can name some. The machete was it GA, grandma and child. Illegal alien. No connection. They shut down these cases and stories. This one imo was different because at first blush, this was a dead mom and by the time they had DNA and a suspect the public had interest in it.

Anyhow the arsehole will get all the rights unfortunately of our justice system which is backwards and too much the other way these days with releasing violent offenders and more to begin with. This one may go differently because again, it had and has interest and people are watching...

RIP Rachel. Rot in HE77 evil monster. Maryland doesn't have the DP unfortunately.

Rachel Morin murder suspect extradited Thursday to Maryland

A man from El Salvador who is charged in connection with a Harford County mother's killing last year is back in Maryland.

Heavy security consisting of Baltimore County police officers, Harford County sheriff's deputies and Department of Homeland Security investigations agents flanked the airfield Thursday morning at Martin State Airport for Martinez-Hernandez's arrival.

"Our suspect in the Rachel Morin homicide case was extradited here," Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler told 11 News. "It's just a routine matter of police work. We go out there, we send people out to Tulsa. The federal government, Homeland Security, provided the plane — that's why it landed at Martin. They flew our prisoner with our deputies, landing in Baltimore County."

Martinez-Hernandez waived his extradition hearing on Monday and remains held at the Harford County Detention Center pending a bail review at 1 p.m. Friday.

Let me rewrite that. our suspect illegally entered our country after being wanted in his country. He committed at LEAST one other crime in our country we know of with a home invasion in California and then traveled somehow easily coast to coast and attacked and raped and killed Rachel Morin, a mom of five, who was out jogging. These are the crimes we or at least the public know of SO FAR.

Ideally the sheriff would go on to say this happens all of the time and we need to secure our borders and this sh*t needs to stop. Of course the feds flew him there and provided the plane.

There are so many like this who are never even heard of nor most of the public even aware of.

Idiots of course run our world.

RIP Rachel, mom of five who miss you and get to live with this.

Harford County State's Attorney pushing for maximum sentence for Rachel Morin murder suspect

A new court filing from Harford County State's Attorney, Alison Healey, is pushing for the maximum sentence if the suspect accused of killing Rachel Morin is convicted.

The maximum penalty is life without the possibility of parole.

"Since Maryland doesn't have the death penalty anymore, life without parole is the most serious consequence you can face in the criminal justice system," Morin Family Attorney Randolph Rice said.

"The Morin family is incredibly happy that the state has filed this notice, they certainly want to see this man behind bars for the rest of his life if he's convicted of these heinous crimes."

A check of court records online shows that Martinez Hernandez is not due back in court until October.

Well yeah and it isn't his first crime. By a LONG shot. I mean they also have the guy now for the home invasion in California, etc. now too right?

HOW can it EVEN be a thought of whether to charge and ask for the maximum penalty in such cases?

What the heck is wrong with this world these days?

Seriously, I just can't get over it.

Shouldn't even be a QUESTION. And it's too darned bad they don't have the DP BUT Cali does, it just is never carried out.

AND the F E D S do and he has crimes in at least two states, can't they charge it even though two different crimes?

She shouldn't even be dead and he shouldn't have been free coming and going back and forth and you name it.

I think this decades long laxity and experiment have run their course. It's time to end it. I've lost count of the people including children dead because they can't be hard on crime or the border, etc.

ENOUGH. Dumbsh*ts. Seriously.

Trial delayed to next year for El Salvadorean man charged in Rachel Morin's killing

Harford County Circuit Court Judge Yolanda Curtin on Friday granted a defense request to postpone the trial to April 1, 2025.

Attorneys representing the Morin family released a statement shortly after the hearing, saying, in part, that the postponement was anticipated.

"Today's postponement was not unexpected. We've been preparing the family for a lengthy legal process," said attorney Randolph Rice. "The family is strong and taking this in stride, knowing that justice will take time. We remain committed to ensuring that Rachel's memory is honored and justice is served."

NOW THAT is what a P team and LE etc. should be doing. Letting the family know if they see a delay or trial date moved, especially this early on, not to get upset and THIS is what happens. Often. Is anticipated this early, not unusual. This is the kind of thing so many can do better with families that of course don't live ever a legal process or a murder.

Kudos to them.

Jury seated in Rachel Morin murder trial, proceedings set to start Friday

A jury was seated Wednesday in the trial of a man charged with murder in the killing of Rachel Morin.

The panel's 12 main jurors were seated by 3 p.m., followed by six alternates selected shortly thereafter, all to return Friday to be sworn in and begin the trial.

Jury selection started Tuesday, mostly under secrecy and away from the media and the observing public. Despite repeatedly noting intense public interest in this case, the judge barred the media and the public from attending some proceedings on Tuesday.

All of the proceedings held Tuesday afternoon were held in secret behind closed doors. After shutting the media out for three hours in the morning, the judge allowed the media to listen in at an open door for 61 minutes.

When voir dire resumed on Wednesday, the judge issued an amended media order to make space in the courtroom for reporters, as well as setting up an audio feed to an overflow room. It also bans the media from reporting on or posting online or on social media about the trial from anywhere inside the courthouse.

Martinez-Hernandez's defense team argued at a pretrial hearing Monday that the pretrial publicity is so intense that he can't get a fair trial. The defense sought to sequester the jury, which the judge refused.

Daybell isn't being sequestered either and I'd dare say that had a lot more press than this one. Not that this one did not have a lot but that one's had more I'd venture.

I wonder, can't recall if known, if he went for speedy trial here, it doesn't seem that long ago that he was arrested.

'A mother's worst nightmare' | Opening statements delivered in Rachel Morin murder trial
Opening statements and testimony in the trial of Victor Martinez-Hernandez, the man accused of raping and killing Rachel Morin, began on Friday morning.
On Friday, the State's Attorney walked jurors through the case, calling it "a mother's worst nightmare."

She said Morin went to the Ma and Pa trail around 6:58 p.m. on August 5, 2023 and stopped responding to texts from family members shortly after.

Officials said that data from Morin's watch and phone show that sometime between 7:04 p.m. and 7:10 p.m., Morin was killed.

Authorities said her body was found in a storm drain after she had been brutally beaten.

The State's Attorney said during opening statements on Friday that officials were able to track down DNA from clothes and other belongings from family members that Martinez-Hernandez had lived with in Prince George's County.

Prosecutors say that that DNA matched what was found on Morin.

Martinez-Hernandez was later arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the prosecutions said that investigators found photos of Morin and web searches related to her and her death on his phone.

Officials say that Martinez-Hernandez claimed he was "never in Maryland."

Martinez-Hernandez's defense used opening statements to address the jury, and spent time talking to them about being fair and impartial.

They claimed that Martinez-Hernandez was not the man who committed the crime, and they even claimed that Morin had "attracted male attention."

The defense went on to question what the motive in the crime was, where the connection between Morin and Martinez-Hernandez lies, and asked about Morin's boyfriend, Richard Tobin, who had admitted to having sex with her on the day she died.

Oh sure blame the victim, that would p*ss me off as a juror. And he had web searches related to her. So that old thing of she asked to be raped and beaten right?

Disgusting and so is his attorney for even using such, his job or not.

Why the secrecy and banning of media? I have only just started following this in the last day or so.

Rachel Morin was raped and murdered on running trail by illegal migrant who had killed before, court hears
Maryland mother of five Rachel Morin was brutally raped and murdered while out jogging in 2023 by an undocumented migrant who had killed before, a court has heard.

Her heartbroken mother, Patricia Morin, fought back tears as prosecutors described Morin’s slaying by suspect Victor Martinez-Hernandez during the opening statements in his murder trial on Friday morning. Martinez-Hernandez, 24, is facing first-degree murder and rape charges, and could be sentenced to life without parole if convicted.

A jury was told that on the evening of August 5, 2023, Morin left her home for a jog on August 5, 2023, and never returned.

Harford County State’s Attorney Alison Healey described what happened to Morin as “a mother’s worst nightmare” as she told jurors how volunteers found the 37-year-old’s body the next day just off the Ma & Pa Trail in Bel Air, Maryland, by following a bloody trail that stretched about 150 feet after she had been dragged by the killer, the Baltimore Banner reported.

Following a 10-month-long nationwide search, Martinez-Hernandez was arrested in June 2024 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by using investigative genetic genealogy to track down family members and later matching his DNA to the crime scene.

The case has captured national attention because of the undocumented status of Martinez-Hernandez, who is from El Salvador, and his connection to prior violent crimes.

His trial is expected to last until April 16.

‘A mother’s worst nightmare’

During opening statements on Friday, the State’s Attorney walked the jury through the tragic case she described as “a mother's worst nightmare.”

She said Morin went to the Ma and Pa trail around 6:58 p.m. on August 5, 2023, and was never seen again.

“That place that she loved so much ended up being the place she lost her life at the hands of this defendant,” Healey told the court.

She went on to say that the Harford County Sheriff’s Office received more than 1,000 tips, which led them to an apartment in Temple Hills, Maryland, where Martinez-Hernandez’s family members provided investigators with a photo, Facebook profile, and phone number, The Baltimore Banner reported from the courtroom.

DNA collected from his belongings matched what was found on Morin, the prosecution said.

Martinez-Hernandez was later arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma. When investigators analyzed his cellphone, they found that Martinez-Hernandez had searched for “Bel,” “Air,” “Rachel,” and a misspelling of Morin, Healey said.

Cached images and YouTube videos about Morin and the investigation were also found, Healey added.

Defense claims Rachel Morin ‘attracted male attention’

Defense attorneys for Martinez-Hernandez argued that he was not the man who committed the crime, went so far as to claim that Morin had “attracted male attention.”

Rachel Morin was brutally murdered. This was a horrible tragedy,” said Assistant Public Defender Sawyer Hicks, one of Martinez-Hernandez's attorneys, in his opening statement.

“But Mr. Martinez-Hernandez is not the man that committed this offense.”

The defense also questioned the motive and said there are many unanswered questions.

“This was not a crime committed by a complete stranger,” Hicks said. “This is someone who had a grievance. Someone who wanted to humiliate Rachel Morin to the greatest extent possible.”

Searcher recalls moment he found Morin’s body

Evan Knapp, who volunteered to help search for Morin on August 6, 2023, testified Friday about the moment he found her body.

“I feel like time froze for a second,” Knapp said, adding that he was in shock. “It’s just kind of hard to really know what I was feeling.”

Morin’s loved ones also took the stand on Friday.

Her daughter, Violet Custer, told the court she became worried when her mom stopped responding to her texts. At 3 a.m., Custer and her mom’s boyfriend Richard Tobin decided to go search for her themselves.

“I went onto the trail, to try to find my mom,” she said.

When Tobin took the stand, he told the court that he tried to call Morin but her phone went straight to voicemail. Then it just started beeping.

He testified that he went out looking for her and discovered her car near the trailhead, before going to search for her again in the middle of the night. Tobin added that he cooperated with police, handing over his phone and a DNA sample.

And when the authorities found Morin’s body, he broke down.

“I freaked out,” Tobin said. “I cried. I screamed.”

Who is Victor Martinez-Hernandez?

Police said Martinez-Hernandez, who is from El Salvador, had been living in the US illegally since February 2023.

He is believed to have killed a woman in El Salvador in January 2023 before crossing into the US and attacking a nine-year-old girl and her mother during a home invasion in Los Angeles in March 2023, Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler said.

The suspect has connections in the Washington, D.C. area, in both Virginia and Prince George's County, Maryland, and has ties to known gangs, Gahler added.

"Victor Hernandez did not come here to make a better life for himself or his family," Gahler said at the time of the arrest. "He came here to escape the crime he committed in El Salvador. He came here and murdered Rachel and, God willing, no one else."

Who was Rachel Morin?

Rachel Morin, a mother of five, who lived in Harford County, was out for a jog when she was dragged from the trail, raped and murdered.

A community in mourning gathered to honor her memory following her death. According to a program distributed at the memorial, Morin was a fitness enthusiast who lifted weights and participated in marathons. She loved fashion and enjoyed traveling.

And she was a dedicated mother of five children, aged eight to 18 years old. The children are being taken care of by their fathers and other relatives, according to Joseph Murtha, an attorney representing Morin’s family.

Her mother Patty Morin said she owned a cleaning company and worked hard to support her family. She also loved to exercise and spent a lot of time on the Ma and Pa Heritage Trail.

“We actually lived a block away from the trail for over 10 years when they were younger,” Patty Morin said. "And, as a family, we would go there every day . . . I always told Rachel to never go on the trail alone. Even though it's safe, just don't do that.”

Michael Morin, Morin’s brother, gave an emotional speech at the Republican National Convention in July 2024, where he condemned his sister’s murder.

“Rachel, a joyful, accomplished athlete and mother of five, was raped and murdered by a suspected illegal immigrant,” Morin told the RNC attendees. “My sister’s death was preventable.”

They don't even like or mention most of the time of stating when someone is an illegal but I see your article below did. May be part of it, have seen others. And various states as to media may be part.

His DNA matched a home invasion I think in Cali. They didn't know who he was then but it had a hit.
