Red Wing Woman Pleads Not Guilty in Newborn’s Death in 1999

The Red Wing woman who was identified earlier this year as the mother of two of the three newborn children who were found dead in the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota between 1999 and 2007, today entered not guilty pleas to murder charges.

52-year-old Jennifer Matter, who faces two counts of second-degree murder, appeared today in Goodhue County Court and entered the not guilty pleas following an evidentiary hearing. She is scheduled to return to court for a settlement conference in late December.

Matter was charged earlier this year after investigators used DNA evidence to identify her as the mother of a newborn girl who was found dead in the Mississippi River in Redwing on November 11, 1999. The DNA testing also identified her as the mother of a newborn boy whose remains were found in Lake Pepin at Frontenac in December 2003.

At this point, Matter has not been charged in connection with her infant son's death, which remains under investigation.

The body of a third newborn was recovered from the Mississippi River near the Treasure Island Casino in 2007. The DNA testing conducted in the case was not able to link Matter to the infant girl. Her case remains unsolved.
Not just once!!! This b**** is the same age as me. So she was 29 and 33. I never agree with dumping a baby that was just born. EVER! But she wasn't some scared teenager. She was 29 and 33. REALLY?! Try birth control. How's that idea?. FFS! Stupid, Murdering 🤬

Unbelievable. You and I both know Red Wing. Not that big either. Did no one know of either pregnancy or wonder where the babies went??!!!

This is as chilling and cold as one gets. The most vulnerable innocent of lives, just like our three month old was. Not a chance in hell do they have, entirely dependent on whose hands they are literally in. They can't do anything, even crawl. BUT that makes it so easy for an evil woman like this, so easily silenced and disposed of. And life goes on for her a second later free and easy...

NOT any more!!

@GrandmaBear. I completely agree with you my friend. And the lie as far as I am concerned, Not breathing. Well of course not. You have to clear the airway. No indication in what she has said that she tried.

True. Never cleared the airway or just lying. After all she did it to two. Not a word she breathes is likely true.

RED WING, Minn. — A 51-year-old Red Wing woman was sentenced to 326 months in prison for the murder of her infant son, who she left on a Goodhue County beach in 2003.

Jennifer Lynn Matter pleaded guilty to felony second-degree murder with intent but not premeditated earlier this year in a plea deal that dismissed a second felony charge, second-degree murder without intent and not premeditated.

She was identified as the mother of a newborn baby boy who was found deceased in Lake Pepin in 2003 and a newborn baby girl found in the Lower Boat Harbor of the Mississippi River near Red Wing. She was charged with murder in May 2022.

Good. She did it more than once. There is an easy solution. It's called "Birth control". But, plea deal?. I'm sick of that crap. I hope she serves every day of those 27 years.

It's getting to the point where we should be happy with 25 to 30 years. Isn't that sick? That is a GOOD sentence in most murder cases these days.
