ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

I think Jewish is actually a race and Judaism is the religion.

Some of the DNA tests can actually identify Jewish roots.
That's right. Something like that was nagging at me but I didn't want to say it was a race thing if it wasn't. It has always seemed to me that it was about race in some sense but again I didn't want to dare say it if I was wrong. PC and all these days and sensitive topics. The Holocaust deservedly is a sensitive topic.

I don't know. @Sunburst can you shed some light on this for us?
I'm lost ,too. I always thought Judaism and being Jewish was religion, not race. I have vaguely heard that some Jewish people are more susceptible to some terrible illnesses/ diseases than non-Jews. I think an illness called Tay-Sacks (sp?) is one of those illnesses , which apparently appears in childhood.

I want to kick the McMinnville TN school board in their collective butts. F÷=#%!# idiots, each and every one of them, for banning the classic and award winning book about the Holocaust. For one illustration featured a naked woman who was persecuted by the Nazis in a concentration camp. The book is based on the true experience of the author's family members who were put in the camps . The woman in the illustration was the author's mother and she was forced to strip naked in the camp.

I don't want my remark to go down a rabbit hole of what should or shouldn't be allowed in school, but I hate the banning of books that for sure in this case were detailing a part of history and a true account. For us, I forget what grade, probably around 6th, Ann Frank was required reading if I recall. We also had prayer in school or at least I did in kindergarten and I think the early years. I also dare say there are likely books in the schools that ban such things that are allowed that I would not agree with...

Things change and some things have been going down a slippery slope for awhile... This topic could go in so many directions and I could comment on many things but I'll just say I don't like what is going on with such things nor more rules and regulations either, than are necessary.

The one other thing I will mention is I don't know if anyone else has encountered it but for more than a few years there has been a push and some people claiming the holocaust never happened at all... I have encountered people that think that and say that...

The thing too in this conversation about whether Jews are a "race" I think for some out there it is an agenda of which race is a race when it comes to defining discrimination against a race... And that is another whole can of worms...

As all know, I tend to avoid the political and other type of subjects/threads so I won't probably go far on this one here but it is just because it is always so "loaded" these days, and of course can go in so many directions, the discussion anywhere of such things. Sometimes crimes of course can touch on them, for instance Arbery (race and politics) and Maxwell/Epstein of course has a political undertone at times as there are former politicians and princes mentioned...

But I don't like what they are doing in schools re books and many other things and of course the Holocaust happened. I guess whether Jewish means race or not, it most certainly was a war of discrimination against Jews or one group of people. And Hitler did dream of creating a perfect race and they were not a part of his plan. So I'm not scared to state what I think either.

Oh, also, did they ban Laura Ingalls Wilder? Some time back I heard talk of that as her books were "racist... Or some such... Never did hear if whatever group pushing that managed to accomplish it. Facts are facts and the world wasn't always pretty...

Yep, these articles talk about it.

In the LIW books, Ma is terrified of Native Americans, didn't like them, and made disparaging remarks about them. There was also a comment in one of the books about the dark skin of an African American frontier doctor that saved fhe family from malaria.
The American Library Association has a "lifetime achievement" award that is given to a children's or teen author for their entire body of work, not just for one book like the Newbery Award. The award for decades was known as the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. It is NOT given out yearly like the Newbery of Caldecott medals are. It is given once every three years, IIRC. It is considered to be far more prestigious than the Newbery.
The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award name was changed to the "Lifetime Distinguished Literature Award" or some similar bland name.

I think like with regard to Minnie Mouse's makeover, it seems sometimes the focus on the more minor things than trying to fix the bigger things is, I don't know, like part of what bothers people sometimes. Can't anything be left alone... Our history is what it is... As was the Wilder family's...

How her mother felt, her mother felt, right or wrong. She was sharing an honest account and I don't doubt in that day and age, we may have been terrified or at least a bit as well. Like I said earlier, life and history isn't always pleasant, times were different but changing the truth or taking it away and not talking about it doesn't change that it happened.

I think it's sad they did that. And then of course we have Mark Twain...

They are also teachable or teaching moments after reading the book and discussing it... Questions like can you believe some people thought that way back then? And do you know that some still do..? Examples. You would know better than I as to school and discussion with students to let them think, form opinions and discuss...

Moved a few posts about the latest missing child (Serenity McKinney) to a thread for her in the Missing forum.

Akia Eggleston update!

They haven't found her but I agree with this, you know if after a certain length of time you wait or hope for more but feel you have enough and don't know if you will get more, then roll the dice. Who knows who the perp is hurting in the meantime otherwise. Jmo.
