William Tyrrell (born 26 June 2011) is an Australian boy who disappeared at the age of 3 from Kendall, New South Wales, on 12 September 2014. He had been playing at his foster grandmother's house with his sister, and was wearing a Spider-Man suit at the time of his disappearance.[2] Tyrrell is believed to have been abducted.[3][4][5][6]

Despite extensive investigations, as of 21 June 2019, five years after his disappearance, Tyrrell has not been found, or his abductor(s) identified. On 12 September 2016, two years after his disappearance, a reward of A$1 million was offered for the recovery of William and does not require the arrest, charging or conviction of any person or persons.[7]

William Tyrrell fifth anniversary of disappearance, questions on police handling

Today marks five years since William Tyrrell vanished without a trace from his foster grandmother's home, and questions are now being asked about a witness who claims to have seen him.

On September 12, 2014, about 10.15am, William went missing from the home in Kendall on NSW's mid north coast when he went to play in the yard.

Now, on the anniversary of the disappearance, police have launched a new hotline directly into the coroner's office, which is investigating.

But journalist Caroline Overington, who has closely followed the case and started the podcast Nowhere Child, has now spoken on William's foster mother publicly attacking police, saying they don't have any real leads.

"The investigation is now five years old and they don't have any real leads and there is no forensic evidence collected," she told Seven's Sunrise on Thursday.

"No trace of William has been found - not even a shoe or a hair or any sign that he was ever really here, and that is frustrating.

"But the police can't always tell you what they're doing.

"They always have something going on in the background."

NSW Detectives suspect foster mother dumped William Tyrrell's body after he fell from home's balcony in Kendall and died

Detectives in the William Tyrrell case suspect the toddler's body was dumped in bushland by his foster mother after he accidentally died falling from the family home's balcony.

It was reported on Tuesday night that investigators had handed a brief to the Director of Public Prosecution this month seeking advice on whether the foster mother should be charged with interfering with a corpse and perverting the course of justice.

Detectives claim the foster mother, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, tried to hide the three-year-old's body following a fatal fall at his foster grandmother's property.

Investigators claim the foster mother was spotted driving the foster grandmother's car in bushland near a riding school in Kendall, a short drive from their home.

It is there where it's suspected she dumped William's remains.

According to The Daily Telegraph, there are also claims of inconsistencies with the foster mother's story on September 12 when she reported him missing.

His foster mother has always denied any wrongdoing.

In my opinion this is bull. He didn't accidentally fall from any balcony. I can see them saying it to give her an "out" and reason to TALK... Maybe...

He was three so what, he climbed up on the balcony railing? Fell? And that fall caused his death? What floor by the way? Possible I guess (highly unlikely) but why the heck would they even think this? Something she or someone said? In that case, I would believe it even less. They aren't his mother OR his grandmother. I don't care if they put "foster" in front of those terms or not.

The former foster mother of William Tyrrell has been caught on secret police recordings saying she kicked a child as a result of the intense pressure she was under, including from the Tyrrell investigation.

The woman and her husband, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, are fronting Parramatta Local Court for a five-day hearing this week.

On Monday, the woman pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault but denied two counts of stalking or intimidation of the child. The man has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and intimidation.

<snip>
"I kicked [redacted] this morning. I kicked [redacted] hard. It's not OK," she said on the recording.

"I'm not coping."

She tells the friend she believed police were investigating her over William Tyrrell's disappearance.

"I found out and I lost it," she said.

"They're trying to trip me up on stuff… they're doing it because they f****d it up."

She also expressed a belief that she was stuck in the middle of a political fight over the Tyrrell investigation.

Later that same day, another recording heard the woman apologise to the child.

"I lost complete control and I need to apologise. I am sorry I did that," she said in the recording.

"There's a lot going on for me that you don't know about, a huge amount of pressure and your poking the bear is triggering me and I am right at the end of my coping. I need you to just stop."

William Tyrrell's foster father cleared of lying to secret crime body

Missing toddler William Tyrrell's former foster parents have been cleared of lying to a powerful crime-fighting body, despite covert recordings capturing an assault against a child.

Magistrate John Arms was not convinced the foster father knowingly gave false evidence when called before the NSW Crime Commission in November 2021 as part of a joint investigation into William's disappearance.

"It is clear the issues that were raised in relation to these offences are matters of an ancillary nature to the basis of the investigation," the magistrate said on Tuesday.

The foster mother was previously acquitted of giving false or misleading evidence to the commission in November 2022 about the same "ancillary" matter.

She also dismissed suggestions at the commission she had found William dead, potentially after falling from a verandah, and taken charge of a "situation beyond remedy".

The officer-in-charge since 2020, Detective Sergeant Andrew Lonergan, told Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court it was one of multiple theories in the toddler's disappearance.

EXCLUSIVE William Tyrrell's final hours: Foster mother's never-before-released police interview reveals her account of the missing toddler's last morning alive

A police interview with William Tyrrell's foster mother shows she gave confused and varying accounts of what happened on the toddler's last morning alive, and suggested innocent neighbours as suspects.

In the interview at a Sydney police station, the foster mother was asked about different 'theories' - including whether William was injured in an accident and she and the foster grandmother 'panicked' and 'covered it up'.

Police also asked her whether William could have been run over in the driveway by the foster father, and they covered it up for fear of losing custody of William's sister who lived with them.

There is no suggestion any of these theories are true and the foster family vehemently denies any involvement in William's disappearance. The detective leading the interview subsequently ruled out the foster parents as potential suspects.

The foster mother, known as SD, was grilled about deleting text messages from the foster father on the day William disappeared, and about seeing two mysterious cars that no one else living in the street canvassed by police could remember.

Police also seemed puzzled about the foster mother's timeline of events, and the gap between the last-known photo taken of William, at 9.37am, and what happened before the Triple-0 call at 10.56am.

Over a two-hour, 18-minute interview, SD was challenged about her account of William's last morning and why she and her husband's movements differed from what neighbours in the street and police on the scene said they saw.

Major development in investigation into William Tyrrell case as key deadline is blown

The deadline for any charges to be laid against William Tyrrell's foster mother over the toddler's disappearance has come and gone, and is now likely to be pushed back to later in the year.

Daily Mail Australia understands the January 31 cut-off for the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions to consider charging the 58-year-old has been extended because of new evidence added to the brief.

I don't know if it is because I am tired or what but this article is all gobbledygook to me. Have to be at work by 7 in the dark, little sleep.

In one sense it sounds like prosecutors blew the deadline and the case but in another it is like they did so as there is new evidence. i don't know if it is me not processing, the fact it is Daily Mail or the difference in justice systems but overall to me it sounds like excuses. No idea.

So also some other child that foster mom agrees she assaulted but did not stalk. WTH.

Praying justice is done here.

William Tyrrell's foster parents guilty of intimidating another child, cleared of domestic violence allegations

A magistrate has dismissed a slew of domestic violence allegations facing William Tyrell's former foster parents, while upholding counts of intimidation against each.

Arguments over household chores, including cleaning a bedroom and stacking the dishwasher, formed part of the prosecution's case against the pair.

The former foster mother was cleared of five counts of intimidation, while the foster father had one count of assaulting the child dismissed, in a hearing at Sydney's Downing Centre today.

Threats to slap the child made by the mother on two occasions were upheld by Magistrate Susan McIntyre as threats of intimidation.

The former foster father was found guilty of intimidation on one occasion while driving the child to school, during which the child was heard "crying and sobbing", the court was told.

Prosecutors relied on more than 1000 hours of covert recordings made in the couple's home and vehicles over a period of 14 months in 2020 and 2021 by detectives investigating William's disappearance.

The former foster mother also earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting the child on two occasions in January and October 2021, striking her with a wooden spoon and kicking her on the thigh while she was sitting on the floor during a timeout.

Lawyers for the woman argued her actions did not constitute a pattern of violence and that she is "distraught and remorseful" for her actions, which the magistrate accepted.

The former foster father was cleared of assaulting the child while implementing a "time out", which involved him placing his hands on the child's shoulder and applying pressure in order to place them in a seated position.

Interviews with the child in which they said they had never been hurt by the foster father, helped establish his innocence, McIntyre said.

Last dates set for long-delayed missing toddler inquest

A long-delayed inquest into the fate of missing toddler William Tyrrell will hear from a final group of witnesses before the end of the year.

The three-year-old went missing while playing at his foster grandmother's home in Kendall, on the NSW mid-north coast, on September 12, 2014.

A brief hearing in the NSW Coroners Court on Tuesday set two final hearing blocks to be held from November 4-8 and December 16-20 to complete the inquest.

Counsel assisting Gerard Craddock SC told the court a list of witnesses and issues to be addressed during those hearings would be finalised by Friday.

Not going to pretend I understand the inquest thing versus trials.

They sound a bit on one hand like a grand jury but they also often end things. Well I don't know if that is the case there but I have seen them in Australia and I want to say the UK or Great Britain as a not uncommon thing. Not sure if the same as here.

Here I think I recall one and I think it is what they called it, I COULD be wrong, maybe it was just some kind of review and determination because no justice could result.

But it was those two moms who ended up in the ocean with all their adopted children who were a big paycheck to them and majorly abused, mistreated, malnourished, etc. All dead. I believe one was never found if I recall correctly. They had been in many states prior to California INCLUDING MN. Each time when neighbors or people started seeing things and they feared being caught out, they up and moved...

Because it was so awful and all were dead and neither woman could be charged with anything and people were hot about it and well aware of the case, they did I believe it was an inquest and then made findings to I think give some justice and closure because it NEEDED to be SAID and a legal determination MADE of what happened and what they were guilty of.

I BELIEVE it was an inquest. But again maybe it was a case follow through and findings or something. Could be wrong.

Here though, in these countries, the ones who allegedly did these things are alive and should be tried. Not sure I get what is going on in the above few posts AND charges dismissed too...

Overall not liking how it sounds. But since I'm unclear about the system, not sure if it means nothing will happen or it still will.

Again, there, part of such seems almost like a grand jury thing. Garnering info, bringing people in...

And again I could be wrong that the Cali evil POS moms thing was an inquest. I sure think that's what they called it but again could be wrong. And so it isn't the same here imo as in like Australia.

A decade on from disappearance of three-year-old William Tyrrell, we may never know what happened

William Tyrrell had a radiant smile and an infectious giggle. He danced, drew pictures and rode his bike.

The three-year-old with the cheeky grin loved Bananas in Pyjamas, Fireman Sam and of course, Spider-Man.

William should be starting high school around now.

Instead, for those who searched for him and those who loved him, William will forever be a toddler.

Early mistakes

In hindsight, the investigation into William's disappearance was flawed from the very first day.

It is likely one of the many reasons we still don't know what happened to him.

Police initially assumed he had simply wandered off into the bush, and by the time they considered an alternative, it was too late to preserve evidence at the crime scene.

Criminologist Xanthe Mallett, who has been following the case closely over the past decade, said the lost pieces of evidence form a critical abyss.

"Ultimately we will never know what evidence and witnesses were lost in that first 24 hours which is absolutely crucial in a missing child investigation," she said.

"Sadly you never get that back."

You start at the inner circle and home and work out... I mean we even all know that, LE says that. It's why parents need to be cleared and go out of their way to clear themselves. I don't care who it was for big or small LE, this was a foster child just for one... Search but also preserve and stay on top of the parent/s, family and with them... Too late of course.

I thought from the first time I EVER heard of this case ding, ding, ding... I know some would say that's my normal leaning but it was far from just that. It was many things and imo LE should have definitely had that as one of their possibilities and not just went with a child that took off.

He was 3 and at minimum you have a child that was NOT being watched well. Then he's a foster child. And then it goes on from there. The whole story to begin with... And then onward.

Sorry but EPIC fail. This child was failed all the way around.

What William Tyrrell would look like today: Computer-generated image released to mark 10 years since three-year-old vanished

A new image created by a high tech US crime lab could help unlock one of Australia's most haunting mysteries 10 years after William Tyrrell vanished without a trace.

World leading forensic imaging experts for US forensic facility Parabon Nano Labs has created and released a computer generated image of what William would look like today at age 13.

Former William Tyrrell suspect had ‘shrine’ to missing boy

A man once considered a “person of interest” by police investigating the disappearance of three-year-old William Tyrrell had a “shrine” to the missing child at the end of his bed.

The collage of images, discovered in the years after William went missing and featuring photographs of him from media reports, dominated a wall in the man’s isolated house near where the toddler was reported missing.

It also included handwritten poetry about the police investigation and a quote from the former lead detective, Gary Jubelin, about leaving “no stone unturned”.

The man, who news.com.au is not naming, said he had not been called to give evidence at an inquest into William’s September 2014 disappearance, which is due to conclude within months.

Mr Jubelin, who was taken off the investigation in 2019, has previously written to NSW’s director of inquests saying the man’s behaviour was “concerning” and he should be called as a witness.

When questioned during news.com.au’s podcast investigation Witness: William Tyrrell, the man said he was “different from the mainstream” and had no alibi for the morning the three-year-old went missing, but denied any involvement.

It is not suggested the man was involved in William’s disappearance and he has never been charged with any related offence.

Is this the same guy who had a van with a spiderman toy in it? (I hope I'm recalling this correctly. It's been YEARS since I first read about this case).

Imo this is squarely on the foster mother/parents and always has been. If anyone else was involved, then it was planned.

This seems to be distraction from where they were finally going and knowing but apparently not enough.

It's just my opinion and let me make it very clear I am talking for self and to no one or anyone else's opinions, nothing hidden, from day one in this case I did not buy a word of it way back when.

And I still DO NOT.

The "family" story. Or or foster mother's. Etc.

I consider it total Bullsheet.

Again JUST MY OWN OPINION. I never Mooed and won't ever, always refused to, that's a JT thing...

‘Hundreds of years’: Court hears key in William Tyrrell mystery

William Tyrrell’s Spider-Man suit would have taken hundreds of years to break down and no traces of the little boy were found during a painstaking forensic search of the Kendall area, an inquest has heard.

William’s disappearance, from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall on the NSW Mid North Coast on September 12, 2014, is being probed by a long-running inquest before Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame.

After long delays, the inquest has returned to the NSW Coroner’s Court at Lidcombe for what will be the fifth block of hearings.

The final tranche of hearings is focusing in on a police theory that William died in an accidental fall from a veranda and his foster mother covered up the accident by disposing of his body.

It’s an allegation that has been persistently and vehemently denied by the foster mother.

ACCIDENTAL FALL

The court was told police believed that William died in an accidental fall and his foster mother disposed of his body in nearby bushland at the corner of Batar Creek Rd and Cobb and Co Rd.

Counsel assisting Gerard Craddock SC told the court that according to the police theory, the foster mother then returned to her mother’s home at Benaroon Drive and phoned triple-0.

“The evidence in tranche five will look at that theory,” Mr Craddock said.

The court was told that police believed the foster mother “resolved” to dispose of William because she feared losing another foster child in her care.

The foster mother has persistently and vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

The court was told that the inquest would hear evidence from a truck driver who was driving in the vicinity of Batar Creek Rd and Cobb and Co Rd on September 12, 2014.

The foster mother’s evidence to the NSW Crime Commission will also be played to the court.

Mr Craddock told the court that police theories could be wrong.

He noted earlier police theories that washing machine repairman Bill Speeding was a person of interest.

NSW deputy coroner issues warning after foster mother abused outside Tyrrell inquest

Missing toddler William Tyrrell’s foster mother has been verbally abused outside an inquest into his disappearance, prompting a stern rebuke from the coroner.

The inquest is hearing evidence about a 2021 police search for the three-year-old and a police theory the foster mother disposed of his body after his accidental death.

On Tuesday, NSW deputy coroner Harriet Grahame heard the woman was publicly named and abused outside Lidcombe Coroners Court on Monday afternoon.

Strict legal orders are in place preventing her identity from being disclosed.

“Fairness is deserved by all who come here for whatever reason,” counsel assisting Gerard Craddock SC said.

“That sort of conduct is something that could, if established, amount to a punishable contempt of court.”

Grahame said she was disappointed and disturbed by the conduct.

“I do issue a stern warning, please behave in an appropriate manner,” she said.
