LANSING — The FBI is coordinating the search Monday for a 2-year-old girl who they believe was kidnapped Sunday by a man who also stabbed the girl's mother.

Lansing Police say the suspect in the case, 26-year-old Rashad Trice, was taken into custody in St. Clair Shores, but the girl, Wynter Cole Smith, is still missing. Wynter was last seen with braided, shoulder-length hair and wearing a white T-shirt with rainbows, police said.

Lansing Police said in a release Monday that they were dispatched to a home in the 3000 block of Beau Jardin Drive in Lansing, where they found a 22-year-old woman with stab wounds and other signs of assault. The woman identified Trice to police. She was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said in the release the woman and Trice had been in a previous relationship. Police said the child is not Trice's biological daughter.

"Officers learned Trice left the home after stealing the victim’s 2013 white Chevrolet Impala," LPD said in the release. "The police also discovered the victim’s 2-year-old daughter Wynter Smith was also no longer in the home and is believed to have been kidnapped by the accused."

"This is a very urgent situation," Lansing police said in a tweet about 12:33 a.m. Monday.

An Amber Alert was sent out about 2 a.m. reporting the child as missing and endangered. Police said Trice had ties to Detroit.

St. Clair Shore Police identified the vehicle being sought shortly after 6 a.m. near 9 Mile Road and Harper Avenue. St. Clair Shores Police tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. Police arrested Trice after a brief chase that ended near Little Mack and 10 Mile roads when the car crashed into a police vehicle, St. Clair Shores police said.

A St. Clair Shores Police officer received medical treatment for his injuries sustained due to the collision and was discharged, police said. The suspect also sustained injuries from the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Lansing Police said Wynter is still missing as various law enforcement, including the FBI Lansing field office, assist in the search for her.

Everything points to a very bad conclusion. Just to get back at the mother?. He isn't the child's father. So. Whatever reason?. And the fact she was not with him, And he was already arrested for committing this. That's a very bad sign.

It is just neverending isn't it. These types. These crimes.

Stabs her, steals her car, former relationship and takes her child. It isn't his child so I don't have much faith in her being alive based on all the facts and the big one, that she is still missing.

Clearly he hasn't told LE where she is and that she is safe and sound has he?

I guess torture or even anything past saying please tell us to a perp is out of line. Sometimes I think that's too bad but I know, I know....

But what if this child was alive but dumped somewhere alive and time was of the essence...

Not that I think that, I think she is very likely dead.

Another bottom of the barrel, creepy crawler evil POS. Most likely. Imo. Jm. Allegedly.

Lansing police on Monday evening said it is working to dispel rumors that Wynter Smith has been recovered.

The Lansing PD Twitter account posted a message saying that by going door-to-door, officers encountered numerous reports of misinformation that had been circulating that the girl had been found - which it said it not true.

"As our officers have been going from door to door and we’ve been talking to the community, we’ve been hearing from a lot of people who thought that 2-year-old Wynter Smith has been found. Unfortunately, that is not true," The account tweeted. "We are actively looking for Wynter. Please do not spread misinformation and rely on the Lansing Police Department page or any information directly from the FBI. We promise as soon as there is news, we will let you know."

Wynter’s grandmother is staying in faith.

"She’s just a wonderful, joyful person and she’s very smart," she said. "I’ve lived in Detroit a long time and I’ve seen miracles happen. I’ve seen kids we thought we wouldn’t find them and they come back safe so we still have faith."

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – The Amber Alert for missing 2-year-old Wynter Smith remains active. Smith was abducted in Lansing Monday (July 3) morning, but the search has shifted to Metro Detroit.

The story has been evolving since we’ve gotten the alert on our phone in the middle of the night. Smith was believed to be with 26-year-old Rashad Malik Trice who has ties to Detroit.

So many people are hoping for the best possible outcome for the little girl, especially her grandmother, who is a resident of Detroit.

Sharen Eddings is hoping wherever her granddaughter is, she’s with her in spirit.

“I feel like I’m there with her,” said Eddings.

Eddings has been on edge ever since she found out that the 2-year-old was kidnapped in Lansing, allegedly at the hands of her mother’s ex-boyfriend, Trice.

“We would like to hear more from his (Trice’s) parents,” Eddings said. “We don’t know if they’re up there. He’s not talking to the FBI. He refused to talk.”

Before Smith’s kidnapping, it’s alleged that Trice even stabbed the mother of the 2-year-old.

“When he stabbed her, from what I understand from her sister, she was able to stab him back right, wound him back,” Eddings said. “That’s when he grabbed Wynter and threatened to harm her, and that’s when he left.”

UPDATE 10:40 P.M. (WLNS) – The Lansing Police Department has released new information on the search for Wynter Smith.

Officials searching for Wynter have released a map containing the alleged route taken by Trice, the man accused of kidnapping Wynter.

Trice was seen driving a white 2013 Chevrolet Impala.

Law enforcement officials are asking anyone that has seen that vehicle along the above route between 11:15 p.m. Sunday night at 1:00 a.m. Monday morning to call the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

UPDATE 5:30 P.M. (WLNS) – The Lansing Police Department has released a new statement on the search for Wynter.

Law enforcement officials also warned possible co-conspirators that “anyone who is found assisting the suspect in an effort to hide the victim will be subject to potential criminal charges.”

The mother is currently in stable condition, the Lansing Police Department said.

The anger that is breeding in the world nowadays is over the top.

I do believe that he did this because he was angry with the mother.

I am trying to figure out what is meant by that she was kidnapped in Lansing and the grandma wondering if Trice's parents are up there. Did this not happen at the house of the child and her mother? Or does she mean whether they are up in metro Detroit? Or does she mean whether they are up there as in "visiting him" in jail...?

Also does anyone know how long this route is on this map that shows in the above post. It looks lengthy but hard to say as it isn't clickable I don't think to find out more.

Finally anyone seeing this vehicle at that hour of the night when dark seems a shot in the dark (not a pun) but maybe they will get lucky if the vehicle was parked somewhere or he was driving erratically or something.

Since the grandmother mentioned his parents and then the cops mentioned a warning that anyone harboring her, etc. or who had helped him hide her (do they mean alive or otherwise), etc. could be charged, it makes me wonder if there is a chance she is alive... However, it could be the opposite and they helped cover up OR he went to land they own, etc. Hard to decipher...

BUT if he did NOT kill the child, he has murdered no one and wouldn't be in the worst of trouble. BUT THEN you'd be smart and hand her over and he hasn't. That brings me back to not having a lot of hope.

So the child's mother managed to stab him after he stabbed her...? Didnt know that until now. And then he allegedly took the child...

There have been cases where they drop the child off with someone they know, but after this length of time, I don’t know that that will pan out in this case.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Lansing Police Department is searching parts of the highway related to the case of kidnapped 2-year-old, Wynter Smith.

Dozens of officers with a police helicopter are searching along northbound I-496, north of I-96, part of the path law enforcement says suspected kidnapper Rashad Trice drove the night Smith was taken.

Smith went missing on Monday after police say she was kidnapped by her mother’s ex-boyfriend following a fight.

Investigators said Tuesday that Trice has family and known associations in the Metro Detroit area, and that they were exploring all of those connections. Still, Trice has not been cooperating with the investigation, and authorities have not given any indication that they know where Wynter may be.

How to help

Police on Tuesday released maps showing the route they believe Trice had driven after fleeing Lansing. Investigators are asking anyone traveling this route to be as alert as they can, and to report anything that seems out of the ordinary, even if it feels small or insignificant.

<snip>

Trice is believed to have driven on the freeway from Lansing beginning at 11:20 p.m. on July 2. He is then believed to have reached Metro Detroit after midnight, and then Detroit itself at around 1:10 a.m.

He’s believed to have left Detroit around 2:40 a.m., and moved around the east side until his arrest in St. Clair Shores around 5 a.m.

Anyone who drives along that route is encouraged to safely keep their eyes peeled for anything that may help the investigation.

Doorbell cameras

Southeast Michigan residents and business owners who are along Trice’s believed route are asked to review their doorbell or security camera footage from overnight July 2 into July 3.

Police are looking for any specific information about where the white Chevy Impala drove, stopped or parked within those overnight hours. That information could help narrow down where Trice went, and where Wynter may be located.

Police are especially interested in where Trice had gone between 11:15 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday.

If you notice anything unusual on your cameras from overnight Sunday into Monday, investigators are asking you to reach out. Again, you can call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or click here to submit an online tip. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to Wynter.

Police are searching roadway shoulders and wooded areas below the Interstate 496 overpass near the Red Cedar River and U.S. 127 today, in hopes of finding 2-year-old Wynter Cole Smith, who's been missing since July 2.

Search parties also are unfolding from the capital area to Detroit as people are eager to help police and family locate the girl.

Over 50 people have signed up with a nonprofit organization, and other private searches have started, as Michiganders comb through wooded areas, shoulders, medians and all possible other locations for Wynter.

The Dock Ellis Foundation has coordinated searches with the family, Lansing Police and the FBI to narrow down where to start, CEO and Founder Jasmine Ellis said.

"It just takes being able to partner with people and speaking to law enforcement so we're doing a process of elimination since the case is so fresh," she said.

Anyone who wants to help search for Wynter is encouraged to wear bright, reflective clothing if they're looking along the roads.

Antes encouraged her team to search with fully-charged phones, bottles of water, protective gear from the sun and to wear proper foot attire to walk in tall grass and in watery areas.

Lansing Police and the FBI have shared approximate times for Trice's travel to St. Clair Shores:
  • From 11:20 p.m. on Sunday to 12:20 a.m. on Monday, Trice is believed to have been between Lansing and Genoa Township;
  • Around 12:50 a.m. he was near Lathrup Village via I-96;
  • Between 1:10 a.m. and 2:40 am., Trice traveled on M-39 from Southfield to Detroit, where he has ties, and then back onto I-96
  • He took various local roads and ended in St. Clair Shores, where police arrested him.
