Officials believe Wynter Cole Smith was killed with pink cellphone charger after Amber Alert

Officials believe Wynter Cole Smith was killed with a pink cellphone charging cord that was found on her body days after the Amber Alert.

A charging document accuses Rashad Maleek Trice, 26, of Detroit, of abducting Wynter after he stabbed and sexually assaulted her mother, Trice’s ex-girlfriend.

“Based on my training and experience, there is probable cause to believe that (Wynter) was kidnapped from her home and transported to Detroit,” FBI special agent Christopher Rodolico wrote. “There is probable cause to believe that (Wynter) was murdered by Trice and left in the alley, where her body was discovered.”

The charging document includes pictures showing parts of a pink cord inside the stolen Impala. Officials said they believe Wynter was strangled to death with that cord.

“(Wynter’s) cause of death appeared to be strangulation with a pink cellphone charging cord that was recovered with the body,” the document reads. “The pink cellphone charging cord was consistent with the pink cord parts recovered from the Chevrolet Impala. A medical examiner’s final report of the cause of death is still pending.”

DAYS AFTER THE AMBER ALERT??? What?? Just what was he doing with her all of that time and where were they?!!

I don't like the headline either. It made me think as it likely did many the Amber Alert was what caused him to kill her and as if he did so right after knowing of it. But then I read further and it said days after. I WONDER how they know that? Medical examiner's conclusions aren't in yet, final report still pending it says.

The mother's family I believe said something about his family, perhaps thinking his family was helping him or some such when she was still missing so maybe they holed up there but not sure of that, all I know is this says he killed her days after the alert. NOT liking that at all. Think about that. That would be time to CALM down and NOT DO IT. At that point, he had not murdered anyone yet. So WHY? And even if he'd had some charges from it like kidnapping, etc. he77 they'd let him out of tons of them before so again why not help yourself and just give her back and turn yourself in?

I don't like the thoughts this gives me. Also do we think he was alone with her all of these days or with buddies, druggies, family, who knows? The cord seemed to have been from the vehicle though...

He is responsible for the murder of an innocent child but do you know what? So are a ton of people in the system. Had he been incarcerated on all his other sh*t as he should have been, NOT a single child would have been within his reach. Her blood is on ALL OF THEM.

(WXYZ) — The push for justice for Wynter Cole-Smith will take a step forward today. Police say Wynter was kidnapped in Lansing by 26-year-old Rashad Trice. Days later her body was found in Detroit.

Trice, the ex-boyfriend of Wynter's mother, will face federal charges in court. If convicted he could face the death penalty. Capital punishment is outlawed at the state level but can be brought federally.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Rashad Trice, 26, the man accused of kidnapping and killing 2-year-old Wynter Cole-Smith, was in federal court Tuesday morning.

Trice was in court for a preliminary hearing. According to sources, probable cause was found to hold him and he then waived his right to a bond hearing.

Federal. Good. Throw it all at him.

Plus the local courts let him go time and time and time and time and time and time again.

Her blood is on their hands. And his.

Nessel to prosecute suspect in death of Lansing toddler Wynter Cole-Smith

Attorney General Dana Nessel's office confirmed Thursday it would handle state charges against a man charged with kidnapping a Lansing toddler that sparked a statewide search.

Rashad Trice, 26, currently faces kidnapping and sexual assault charges, among others, across multiple local jurisdictions in connection to the murder of Wynter Cole-Smith, 2, and the assault of her mother.

"The Department has begun the process of reviewing police reports for potential murder charges," Nessel's office said in a release. "In concert with Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido, and Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, charges previously announced against Trice will be reviewed and reissued by the Department of Attorney General.

“This is a tragic case, and by consolidating the prosecution into one venue, we are recognizing the hardship the surviving victim and family continue to face,” Nessel said. “I am grateful for the partnership with Prosecutors Dewane, Lucido, and Worthy which allow all of us to place the victims’ needs first while seeking justice for Wynter and her mother.”

‘She’s gone’: Prosecutors reveal new text messages in Michigan Amber Alert case against Rashad Trice

In the preliminary hearing that occurred in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, July 11, federal Judge Ray Kent found probable cause to proceed with the charges against Trice. During the hearing, investigators revealed how they used technology to locate Trice with cell phone pinging and license plate readers during a statewide search.

Text messages from Trice’s phone were also revealed, including several believed to be addressed to family, which seem to show his mindset amid the chaos. On July 2, Trice is accused of kidnapping Wynter and assaulting her mother in Lansing before allegedly killing the girl and leaving her in a Detroit alley.

One text message sent by Trice reads: “I love y’all, but I have to end this.” Another one reads the chilling words, “She’s gone.”

Wynter’s body was found in Detroit three days after she went missing. It’s alleged that Trice strangled the 2-year-old with a phone charger.

Yeah maybe while they are at it they should look at the past handling by count(ies?) of his other charges and crimes in the past. I am going to keep saying it in cases. Had he been incarcerated he would never have been able to do this. He allegedly did this but her blood as I said is on the hands of others who left this guy on the streets and didn't even slap his wrist. Menace to society.

This sounds like damage control to me and complimenting or commenting on the local partnership and a big emphasis on the victims. No surprise as to why imo.

Kudos. Making up for what should have been done prior. No surprise but at least someone is doing it now.

It's a world really with not a lot of hope when others can't agree or admit that this LIITLE CHILD'S blood is also on the hands of officials in the system. That's okay, I'll say it . Staying silent about such is just going to perpetuate more of the same.

I agree completely. I keep saying "How many more will it take for them to see it?!". And WE see THEIR idiocracy go on and on. Letting dangerous criminals out that shouldn't be. They are also allowing more victims. And the criminal is just waiting for the day he can get out to do it again.

Maybe the big court can show the local courts how it is done. Hopefully.

Damage control.

This child is yet another that would be alive had they put this man where he belonged for good reason.

And yet, the silence about all that. Wow.

Autopsy report confirms cause of death of kidnapped toddler Wynter Cole-Smith

The 2-year-old Lansing girl police said was kidnapped and later killed by her mother's former boyfriend died from strangulation, according to an autopsy report from the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office.

A pink cell phone cord was wrapped around Wynter Cole-Smith's neck and braided hair seven times, Interim Chief Medical Examiner Lokman Sung wrote in a July 20 report released after a public records request.

The report said Wynter's body also had bruising on her right shoulder, left arm, and both sides of her torso, Sung wrote. Wynter weighed 26 pounds.

"The manner of death is homicide," Sung wrote.

He is currently being held in the Newaygo County Jail without bond.

Trice, 26, made a brief appearance in court two weeks after being indicted on charges of kidnapping a minor and kidnapping resulting in death. Yeah this admin has stopped executions. This case is one that deserves such imo. He had time after time he could have NOT done this. He hadn't murdered the mother, no murder. UNTIL this BABY!!!! After the fact!

Also one that should have NEVER been FREE to begin with.

Feds: No death penalty for suspect in Wynter Smith Amber Alert murder

Federal prosecutors will not seek the death penalty for the suspect accused of the kidnapping and killing of 2-year-old Wynter Cole Smith, whose disappearance triggered an Amber Alert last July.

Rashad Maleek Trice, 26, of Detroit, has pleaded not guilty after being charged with kidnapping a minor and kidnapping resulting in death. The maximum sentence for the latter charge is the death penalty in addition to life in prison. He was bound over for trial by a grand jury.

In court paperwork filed Thursday by US Attorney Mark Totten, prosecutors will not be pursuing the death penalty.

"The United States in accordance with Justice Manuel 9-10.050, provides this notice of its intent not to seek the death penalty in this case."

He's also been charged with over 20 felony counts by the Michigan Attorney General after she decided to consolidate the case due to it being in multiple jurisdictions.

Again this man should never have been on the street or in the public. Again her blood is on the hands of officials who didn't do as should have been done. And if there has ever been a case that deserved death, this is one. A TWO YEAR OLD. HEINOUS. There aren't words BAD enough.

All I can say is THIS time they'd better ensure he never again sees the light of day.

The feds aren't going to pursue DP in this case. I'll bite my tongue other than to say are they pursuing it in any cases... And if they are, in which, in comparison? I'd go with none in general but if there are any, well then why...
