Metro investigating report of missing 2-year-old near Paradise and Twain

Metro police are investigating a missing child case that was reported Wednesday in the area of Paradise Road and Twain Avenue.

Two-year-old Amari Nicholson was reported missing near the 3600 block of Paradise Road. The area is just east of the Las Vegas Strip.

He was last seen around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Police say the child may be in severe emotional distress and in need of medical assistance.

Officers and detectives are following any leads or tips that might lead to the location of the child.

“We are aware of citizens providing tips to news outlets informing that officers have located a body in a dumpster, but this information is inaccurate,” according to a Metro statement. “Officers have been looking into nearby trash containers as a precaution.”

MISSING: Toddler boy vanishes amid rumors of a body found in nearby dumpster

Authorities in Nevada are searching for a 3-year-old boy who reportedly vanished on Wednesday.

In a statement issued to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas police said they were alerted to a child who vanished from the 3600 block of Paradise Road, near East Twain Avenue. Officers reportedly searched nearby dumpsters but found no evidence.

While the police’s statement did not name the missing child, KVVU reported that the toddler’s name is Amari Nicholson.

The news outlet reported that rumors of a body being found in a dumpster in the vicinity where Nicholson vanished were unfounded.

Father of slain toddler speaks out on what would’ve been his birthday

Tuesday would have been the third birthday for Amari Nicholson, a toddler who was allegedly killed earlier this year by his mother’s boyfriend.

8 News Now talked to Amari’s father, who mentioned this birthday is especially hard.

“Amari is my motivation because he is still my baby boy he is still someone I have to provide for and give unconditional love,” said Jyrigio Hayes.

Amari’s father said Rhodes deserves the death penalty.

“Yea he should look death in the face like Amari did it’s only fair, it’s only fair that you look death in the face like the child did,” added Hayes.

Rhodes’s trial is expected to begin in 2022.
I hope he gets the death penalty or life. It often isn't the case. Sadly. Going to trial so I'm sure the man is going to try some defense... This world and some people are so warped it seems these days.

Oh no problem says the D.A. Not a big deal. Sure take more time. This happened in 2021!! Almost two years ago!!

Just another one, same old, same old isn't it... Our courts and system need to change and get with it. Family members die and so do witnesses and memories fade by the time most things get to trial and it is RIDICULOUS.

Las Vegas man pleads guilty to murdering 2-year-old

The man accused of killing a toddler and then burying his body entered a guilty plea in court Thursday, which could put him in prison for several decades.

Terrell Rhodes, 30, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and assault on a protected person with a deadly weapon. Rhodes admitted to murdering two-year-old Amari Nicholson, his girlfriend’s son, in May 2021.

Rhodes appeared in Clark County District Court on Thursday with defense attorney Robert Langford to enter his guilty plea, which stipulates a sentence of 20 years to life. Judge Jacqueline Bluth said while she does not have to go along with the plea deal, after speaking with attorneys, she intends to.

Bluth told Rhodes that he could face a life sentence for the murder charge and a sentence of 1-6 years for the assault charge. Attorneys can argue at sentencing about whether the charges should run concurrent or consecutive.

Rhodes was scheduled to be sentenced on July 30. He remained in the Clark County Detention Center as of Thursday. Rhodes has denied the 8 News Now Investigators’ repeated requests for an interview.

Judge sentences Las Vegas man for killing toddler

A judge sentenced a man Tuesday to life in prison with a possibility of parole after 22 years for killing a toddler.

Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth issued consecutive sentences for Terrell Rhodes, 31, for first-degree murder and assault on a protected person.

The murder charge carries a 20-year sentence, while the assault charge carries two years.

Man who killed 2-year-old Amari Nicholson gets 22 years to life in prison for murder

Rhodes entered a guilty plea last year, in April of 2024, to charges of first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon against a protected person. The plea deal calls for a sentence of 20 years to life in prison for the murder charge.

Judge Jacqueline Bluth sentenced Rhodes to serve 22 years and four months to life in the Nevada Department of Corrections. He will get 1,529 days' credit for time served so far, which amounts to about four years.

"There is nothing that that child could have done that would have ever deserved what you did to him," Bluth told Rhodes as she passed sentence.

Given the opportunity to speak at his sentencing on Tuesday, Rhodes said he feels it's not fair for him to be charged with first-degree murder. Bluth asked Rhodes if he felt remorse.

"Beyond remorse. It's unexplainable; I really can't explain the remorse I feel under these circumstances," Rhodes said. "That little boy called me daddy, you know? But for me to be charged with first-degree murder, I just don't feel like it's right."

We also heard from Amari's mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who read victim impact statements to the court.

Tayler Nicholson, Amari's mom:

"Amari was a bright spirit full of love and joy. He was 2 years old with a long life ahead of him. I lost my son, my home and myself. Any time I closed my eyes, it was like a movie on repeat. I was not able to see or touch my baby ever again. I had accepted to bed sheet was my last goodbye. I feel emptiness from Amari's passing... I only grow more numb. I play all of our videos on repeat so I can hear his soft voice once again. Amari did not deserve this... I have been waiting for your years now for this day, searching for closure, but I realize now there is nothing that can be done to bring Amari home."

Carrie Howard, Amari's grandma:

"I remember I got the call that my grandson was missing early in the morning on May 5th, and he would never be seen ever again. I will never get to hear him say 'hi grandma' ever again. I have moments where a song will come on the radio and I can't hold back the tears. I have experienced many losses throughout my life, there are no words to explain the emptiness and hurt that comes with losing my grandson in such a violent manner. Your honor, I have had 4 years to think about today. My life was crumbled, and it's not fair that he gets to keep his but I hope your honor that you give him the sentence he deserves."

Renae Howard, Amari's great-grandma

"He was a special boy, and we grew very close to each other. He was my shadow... He was the sweetest little boy... Amari was robbed of life because of Terrell... Terrell deserves a life sentence and nothing else. Every day I feel the loss of this little angel. I pray you make the right decision judge, to keep us all safe."

So with time served, possibly 18 years. Another disgusting ending. And he thinks it wrong he was charged with 1st degree. My God. And he could have gotten more than this in most areas for 2nd degree anyhow. He should just shut up.

I didn't have to refresh on this one, I recall it well.

Took enough years too. 2021.
