Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Is this being televised? I have only run into the jury selection on a channel or two (like obscure news stations) and the time or two I have checked it out, it's a bunch of lawyers sitting there with no sound and no one ever speaking. Neither Law & Crime nor Court TV seem to have it. Just wondering if anyone knows? Don't have time to watch it but popped into the couple I saw once or twice when I had a minute or two and nothing going on in the room...

Other jurors who have gone through the selection process expressed concerns about possible repercussions if they were chosen to serve on the panel set to deliver the verdict in the case.

One potential juror who was questioned said he believed it would be "difficult to change my mind" about whether the three men were guilty [of Arbery's death]. He fears there will only be one verdict that's accepted in today's climate, and if that verdict is not returned, some may threaten violence "again."

"The jury is in a tough spot once they're convened," the man said.

Fear of violent protests and outside agitators has been a recurring theme for Glynn County residents ever since the video of Arbery's shooting surfaced. While the community has seen many protests since then, they have all remained peaceful.

While others did not specifically mention concerns over impacts to the community, they said they did not want to serve on the jury, with several telling attorneys they were nervous and some getting emotional during questioning.

One potential juror said, "I don't feel comfortable. I don't like crowds and people and pressure."

Thank you! I saw a hearing prior to jury selection live but not the actual selection when I last checked Court TV. I'll give it another look when I get a chance. Just thought maybe someone knew/had been watching it.

I feel their pain! I’ve often thought that it would be very difficult for me to be a juror in a case like this. How can you look at things objectively when you’re concerned more about the repercussions of the outcome? Although I really think this is a pretty easy case from the outside, you’re still supposed to go in with a clear mind.

I can't blame anyone for not wanting to be a juror in this case. One would worry about their safety, community outrage, etc. Mpls. handled the Floyd trial and I don't think any juror has had any issues but then the cop was found guilty though too... A different verdict and who knows...

I myself couldn't I don't think go in without a bias from having seen the footage we have seen, I could change my mind if for some reason there is more footage or angles that show something else, be open to that, but based on what we have now, I think they are guilty. Maybe I would waver on the appropriate charge or degree of charge depending...

Every single time I go into this there is no sound. I tried last week and now today. In reading on it, it says the judge ruled portions would not have audio. Well I have not encountered audio on anything yet, not that I try all day long. All I ever see is attorneys sitting at a table, no activity and no sound nor anyone saying anything. I could watch paint dry and it would be more interesting. Oh well, don't have the time to watch it for long anyhow but wouldn't have minded catching a bit of it here and there.

My Court TV reception is spotty during the day.

But the Channel 11 link, I ran into that one last week but there is never anything going on in the courtroom a person can hear. It's just a constant view of the seated attorneys with no audio.

Was watching on the Court tv app on my tv. Definitely had sound earlier. They were done with the group questioning and judge said they were taking a 10 minute recess and would be back in 10 minutes for individual questioning. I had to make a few calls and muted my tv. Don't know what is happening now.
