Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Testimony continues this afternoon with more GBI agents. A GBI agent testified yesterday about doing a re-enactment with defendant Bryan who took the cell phone video of the shooting. Today, GBI agents testified about additional efforts their agency took in this case which include digital mapping the Satilla Shores neighborhood, flying a drone to assist in mapping and had an agent photograph the neighborhood via helicopter.

*(my observation only .. Ahmaud's parents have not entered the courtroom yet today, however, they now have two family representatives in the gallery)

They showed autopsy photos this morning and the medical examiner who performed the autopsy testified.

Agent Richard Dial GBI Lead Investigator concluded today's testimony.

Attorney Kevin Gough tried to imply to this agent that Ahmaud Arbery had a route to "escape" however he chose to run into Travis McMichael & engage a fight with him.

State has rested it's case. Court has adjourned until 10am Eastern tomorrow.

*(Ahmaud Arbery's parents did appear in the courtroom gallery before GBI Agent Richard Dial started his lengthy testimony.)

so he tried to escape - what, 4-5 times already?- why was he expected to escape again???

I stand corrected, both of Ahmaud's parents were in the gallery today. They were in/out intermittently during testimony. I'm rather pleased to know that their presence wasn't 'obvious' to anyone watching as I was.

I haven't watched any of these trials going on right now, just haven't been able to so only asking as I don't know how they have things with the trial set-up/courtroom. By gallery do you mean the family has a room with a viewing window that is separate from the public room/benches? I only ask as we had one of those right next to the courtroom that saw into the courtroom and we could hear and see. We could be in the courtroom or in there if we felt it better at times.

I've never heard of that before. In Georgia the family is sitting in view of the jury behind the reporters. Every court case, including the one I sat as a juror on had the family inside the courtroom.

As you know though, the family does not have to be present in the courtroom. For emotional times or autopsy photos, etc. or in the case of a small courtroom or if one wants to talk, we had a room we could go to. We could not see the jury from it and they could not see us, so as a juror you may not have known it if other family, etc. was in there or they availed themselves of it when they did not want to be in the courtroom or did not think they could control outbursts or emotions, etc.

In a number of days of trial too, you may need to leave the courtroom for a break, to make a phone call, etc., and when one came back for instance, one could go into that room rather than open the big heavy doors to the courtroom where everyone notices the interruption, and still see and hear until there was a break, etc. Some extended family for us watched only in there so that the limited seats in the courtroom were used by more immediate family and some just took turns. For instance, my BIL always used the room we sat mostly in the courtroom but I was in the other more than once too.

I don't want to go on further because not even sure if that is what we are talking in this case re "gallery"... When we reached autopsy photos, we were warned well ahead to decide if we wanted to be present and told the Judge would mention it and give a chance to leave when time on that day as well... That was mentioned here, that they didn't think they were present for the photos of such, etc. In this room, if a person wanted, they could stand back or sit on the floor and not be seen or turn their back to not see but could hear... Jurors could not see you. It came in useful a number of times with various family members at different times in a high stress situation...

Roddie testified today about how he is treated in jail?? What the fudge?

I just saw the exchange on Court TV. He was :bawling: because he had to eat breakfast at 5 a.m. and he was in solitary pretty much. I'm guessing that keeping him in solitary like conditions could be for his own safety. I think the judge should say: "Well, I'll see if we can get you put into the general population." Suddenly he'd jump up! "Nevermind your honor! I'm good, I'm just fine!"

If I heard it correctly the judge has asked the jury to show up an hour later than usual. The first hour will be used to deal with a defense issue. I'm guessing Kevin Gough will be wasting the courts time with a lot of racist :poop:

The gallery is in the courtroom , behind the attorneys. As far as I'm aware of there is not a room the family can view the testimony from. However, that is my assumption only since it's not been addressed publically that I'm aware of. hth
