Chicopee police following leads to find missing 11-year-old Aiden Blanchard: Asking Willimansett residents to review surveillance cameras

Police are continuing to search for an 11-year-old who has been missing since Friday and asking anyone from the Willimansett neighborhood to examine home video camera footage to help detectives.

Police and firefighters began the search with boats, drones and a helicopter Friday afternoon and broke it off when it became too dark to be safe. It was resumed on Saturday and continued until high winds and a lack of evidence halted it, Davis said.

The snow has made it too dangerous to resume the search on Sunday but police are spending their time following up on leads that may help locate the child, she said.

“We will assess the information that comes in and resume the search if needed,” Davis said.

Aiden may have been in the area of Old Field Road. If anyone in that neighborhood especially has any type of surveillance camera they are asked to review footage between 11 a.m. Friday and midnight on Saturday to see he may have been caught on camera to help police track where he may have walked, she said.

Chicopee educators plan crisis counseling while search continues for Aiden Blanchard, a missing sixth-grader

As police continue to search for a missing 11-year-old boy, educators are preparing to help classmates and friends with their concerns about his disappearance.

Aiden is a sixth-grader at Edward J. Bellamy Middle School and attended Gen. John J. Stefanik School for elementary school. He also has a brother and sister who are fifth-graders at Stefanik School, Superintendent Lynn A. Clark said.

“Certainly our thoughts and prayers are with his family. He has been with us since kindergarten at Stefanik,” she said.

At both schools the principal, vice principals, counselors, classroom teachers and other educators who may be connected to Aiden or his siblings met on Sunday to discuss how to help children who are upset and worried about his disappearance, Clark said.

While the number of students who have been able to attend in-person classes during the pandemic has been limited, Aiden and his classmates attended class full-time under the phase-in plan that started by introducing the youngest students into in-person classes into each school first. Sixth-graders attended school for about six weeks before all students returned to remote learning in mid-November.

His classmates and teachers do know him from in-person classes as well as spending plenty of time on remote platforms, Clark said.

“It hits the classmates and they do worry and they do need a safe place to process it,” Clark said. “We are going to have counselors available by appointment and by Zoom.”

As with any other crisis, counselors from other schools will pitch in to help if more staff is needed to help the students, she said.

Chicopee schools have handled multiple traumas over the past few years including the deaths of Minhal Hussain, 10, a fifth-grader at Sgt. Robert Litwin School, and his cousin Salman Jaffrey, 11, of Rhode Island, who fell through the ice on the Chicopee River while going out to play near Hussain’s home off Fuller Road during the Christmas vacation last year.

Search resumes for missing 11-year-old Chicopee boy

The search had to be paused this weekend because of a lack of evidence, poor weather conditions, and dangerous waters, authorities said. It resumed on Tuesday.

As much as it hurts my heart to think, has anyone addressed possible self-harm? If I missed this please disregard.
They hadn't released much up until now. But unfortunately that sounds like a possibility after reading this article.

Photos of 11-year-old Aiden Blanchard are circulating. Aiden's mother shared them with Western Mass News, and we learned that the little boy with a big smile has been dealing with a major loss.

Aiden’s mother told Western Mass News his father passed tragically in June, and he has been struggling with managing his grief. She told us she wants him found.

It crossed my mind but I didn't mention it. In my old school ways and thoughts, no 11 year old takes their own life. But I have had to realize and remember that it does happen these days with bullying online, etc. Such a world they live in. One can shelter to death but that does a bit of a disservice too in another way over time or can. They have to learn at some point to deal with the real world if even gradually on their own. Very challenging these days imo and worse all of the time, I don't pretend to know the answer. The big real eye opening one to me was the I think 9 year old not too long ago in Wisconsin in the vicinity of the Wisconsin Dells (not exactly, but not hours and hours away either). It seemed to be hinted at almost and I thought no way, a 9 year old would commit suicide, that is very far fetched. Sure enough that is what they determined when found. So sad. So it did cross my mind here but I still try to resist the thought that it is a likely scenario at such a young age. :(

Just read this. That changes things some. Big loss for a young boy and the entire family would be reeling as well most likely over such a loss. I pray they find him safe and alive but I can't think of many scenarios that are likely after this amount of time. Sadly.

i was thinking the same thing but also thinking of kids that age wanting to walk on the ice that might not be strong enough.
The walking on ice crossed my mind too, I have seen grown men take ridiculous chances so not an out there thought. Yet in one of the recent posts or videos I just watched last night I think, it looked like there was no ice at all on that river, from what I could tell anyhow...

Oh boy. This changes things a bit... Struggling with grief and not grieving properly can lead to a dark place in one's mind

“We are looking to speak to anyone who was walking behind the area of the WWLP-22 News Broadcast Center,” police said on Facebook.

The area behind WWLP-22 leads to the Chicopee and Connecticut rivers. Since Aiden’s disappearance, multiple searches have been conducted along both waterways.
