Woman missing for months as cannibalism rumors swirl; image of partially nude caged woman found

As bizarre rumors of cannibalistic behavior and multiple murder victims flooded social media Saturday, authorities had confirmed little about a missing woman and two suspects now under arrest in South Central Missouri.

Federal authorities ramped up their search for 33-year-old Cassidy Rainwater. Investigators said two men held Rainwater in a cage on Moon Valley Road near Lebanon.

Federal investigators said no one has seen Cassidy Rainwater since July.

Someone reported her missing on Aug. 25.

Two weeks ago, FBI investigators from Kansas City got an anonymous tip that someone was holding Rainwater in a cage on some property near Lebanon. Authorities arrested Timothy Norton and James Phelps.

Prosecutors charged the two men with felony kidnapping. Court documents said investigators found photos on Phelps’ cellphone showing a woman partially nude and in a cage.

Investigators said Norton admitted he helped Phelps to restrain Rainwater.

Beyond the photos, investigators had not disclosed what they found on the Phelps property. Hostetler briefly spoke with Phelps just one time during the past year as his neighbor and heard the rumors of cannibalism.

Cassidy Rainwater is still missing. Anyone who knows where she is should contact their local law enforcement agency.

Mother of missing woman Cassidy Rainwater also victim of mysterious disappearance

Mysteries surrounding the disappearance of Cassidy Rainwater are gaining momentum online as little details have been released since two men were arrested late last week, accused of kidnapping the 33-year-old woman.

Cassidy Rainwater was last seen in mid-July. She was reported missing by a relative on August 25th.

A probable cause statement says on September 16th, the FBI office in Kansas City received an anonymous tip that Rainwater was being held in a cage on a property off Moon Valley Road near Lebanon in Dallas County.

Court documents say two men were living on the property, James Phelps and Timothy Norton. Both were soon charged with felony kidnapping, accused of holding Rainwater against her will.

Dallas County authorities determined Phelps was the last person to have been in contact with Rainwater while both were at his property on Moon Valley Road.

Phelps told investigators Rainwater had been staying with him until she could get back on her feet.

The probable cause statement says James told deputies that a month prior, Cassidy Rainwater had left his property in the middle of the night, met a car at the end of the driveway, and he hadn’t seen her since.

Phelps and Norton are currently in jail. They are due back in court on Oct. 5.

Little else is known about what was found on Phelps’ property, however, OzarksFirst has found more ties to the victim in Laclede County.

Cassidy Rainwater’s mother, Tracy Wahwassuck, went missing in 2007.

Based on previous KOLR 10 reporting, Wahwassuck’s remains were found scattered in a field near Lebanon a year later.

“It was unusual, some of the statements made by people, that we’ll have to go on with the new evidence we have, and see where that leads us,” former Laclede County Sheriff Richard Wrinkle told KOLR 10 during an interview in 2008.

Wahwassuck’s disappearance was reported by KOLR 10 as “suspicious,” but no cause of death has ever been released on her case, and no one has been arrested.

In speaking with the Laclede County Coroner on Thursday, Steve Murrell tells OzarksFirst it’s still an open case.

Murrell says at this time, he does not believe there is any connection between Cassidy’s disappearance and her mother’s death.

OMG. I never say that. Never. I never use those letters. I mean it with respect to God meaning Lord help us.

I only saw a blip from a You Tuber who did a bit about this on her community page, a few short sentences. She did say there were a lot of dark rumors swirling that had not been confirmed by LE. She is a responsible creator and said nothing about cannibalism, etc. and did not go deep into rumors whatsoever. I am not even going to gooo there with cannibalism, had not heard that one at all. In fact I knew little when I came and asked about this case.

It piqued my interest as we have a few on here from the Missouri area and I wondered if it was on here or there were articles. The YTer did say there was mention of possible other remains, lots of them, possibly.

Her mother went missing too???

And somehow I thought this Cassie was found I guess from skimming that they are charged with her disappearance but they still have not found her? They just know she was there from the photo?

This is downright disturbing. I only hope some of these rumors are not true. If the ones mentioned are true, we seem to be looking at a very evil serial killer. Or two.

Whether they are or not, just what is verified is downright evil.

If the rumors are untrue, I wish LE would get out in front of them. There are enough concerning details (like a truck driving deviant) here to keep people nosing around in a helpful way.

I agree. I haven't looked into it further or read anything other than what was posted here and the first short mention I saw but apparently there is quite the talk of how big this is/will be and the details.

Not to mention it has to have people in a bit of fear in the area and anyone with missing loved ones wondering...

What in the he77? I am going to need to go read it yet but first reaction is well there goes a ton of evidence... How? Has this always been laid or something done recently? I guess I don't know if and when or how many times LE has been to the property before...? What the heck was this guy up to and doing all this time...?

The good news is that because of the fire, all kinds of investigative crews can come in. I’ve watched Forensics files on fires a few times and it’s amazing what they can find. Let’s just hope that they were able to put the fire out in time to find something.

I sure hope you are right. Just in skimming it, it sounds like quite the fire and as if it relit more than once. How did this happen though? Was the place not secured by LE once he was arrested? Maybe they had not yet approached or went into the home...

It I guess is also fortunate if it was rigged that they were aware, became aware and I guess detonated the explosive and that no LE officer was hurt or killed.

So we have kidnapping and likely torture of a woman. We have a trip wired home/property with explosives. This case is likely going to be quite something. Is it just him or a group? There are already two arrests...

The explosive thing sounds like the anti-government type of person, etc. The kidnapping though not so much. Drugs? Hard to say.

I'd like to know how many people were ever at this property or live nearby and how close. How did this kind of thing go on without anyone knowing or stopping it by reporting it...?

I think there were several agencies there for days and they had left. I need to double check my facts.

Ok the police were searching his house on the 20th of September, day of his arrest.

Hmm, so what is going on here? How was the home rigged after his arrest? I assume they searched the entire house...

I wouldn't think placing trip wires and explosive(s) would be a simple or quick thing... Either way, someone had to do it after LE was there, right??
