Leon Circuit Judge James C. Hankinson set an April 13 trial date for Katherine Magbanua, whose charges in the murder of Florida State law professor Dan Markel ended in mistrial earlier this month.

Magbanua, wearing a blue Leon County Detention Center jumpsuit, appeared in the courtroom with her attorneys, Chris DeCoste and Tara Kawass. Hankinson asked about her legal representation moving forward; DeCoste said he and Kawass intend to continue defending her.

Judge in Donna Adelson murder trial disqualifies her new attorneys over conflicts​

Just three weeks after Donna Adelson’s murder trial unexpectedly unraveled when her lead lawyer withdrew, the judge presiding over the case ordered that her two new attorneys can’t represent her either.

Leon Circuit Judge Stephen Everett on Monday issued an order disqualifying Robert “Alex” Morris and Adam Komisar over actual and potential conflicts of interest.

It also likely means further delay in Donna Adelson’s trial as her new lawyers will have to spend time getting up to speed on the evidence. After her trial was postponed last month, the court was eyeing a window between November through early 2025, though even that seemed optimistic.

Donna Adelson hires former judge, local defense attorney to represent her in murder trial​

Donna Adelson, whose previous attorneys had to withdraw or were disqualified because of conflicts of interest, has hired a former prosecutor turned judge and a well-known local lawyer to represent her.

Court documents filed Wednesday show Adelson hired Jackie Fulford, a former circuit judge and chief assistant state attorney in the 2nd Judicial Circuit, and Josh Zelman, a Tallahassee criminal defense and DUI lawyer.

Fulford and Zelman, who each have their own firms, filed notice that Adelson is pleading not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation in the 2014 contract killing of Dan Markel.

The defense also demanded a jury trial and asked the state to hand over discovery, which it did earlier with her previous lawyers.
