A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

From the article above...

Laundrie is thought to be somewhere in the “vast Carlton Reserve,” police said on Twitter, referring to the nearly 25,000-acre park near Laundrie’s parents’ home in North Port. He is not charged with a crime, although police are calling him a “person of interest” in the case.

Josh Taylor, a spokesman for the North Port police, told reporters Saturday that about 50 police officers were searching through the wildlife preserve on foot and by car, with the help of dogs, through terrain that is wet and muddy. He said Laundrie’s life could be in danger, but he did not specify why or how.

North Port police, FBI and other agencies are searching for Laundrie in the vast Carlton Reserve, a nearly 25,000-acre preserve with about 80 miles of trails in Sarasota County, where his family says they believe he went earlier this week. Police said the search concluded after dark with "nothing found." The search was scheduled to resume Sunday morning.

how many followers did they have prior to her going missing? I am pretty sure that this would not be enough funds to finance a 4+month trip with gas, food and occasional lodging at minimum. What did they do before that threshold (if they met it) was met and how long has that threshold been met?
They were just over 7000 when I first looked at it, which was the day or the day after I started the thread. The news was already out so I could’ve been way too late to count their followers by then.

Putting myself in his parents shoes, with the only desire to protect my child at all costs, along with the gut instinct that something terrible happened, I could imagine them telling him not to tell them anything to limit their culpability. I can also imagine them saying, " were going to bed now, there is money on the table, we won't notice if you leave or not... wink wink"...
I have no idea because my brain doesn’t work that way. And my kids know it! They know that if they get in trouble like that they are on their own. I will still love them, but I’m not going to help them.

what I don't understand is that why would she not have a key to her own van? I know when we travel, we both keep a key on us in case something happens to the other key so we at least don't have that issue away from home. Did she not have a key the entire trip? When you are clear on the other side of the country, spare keys seem essential, especially when you are out in the boonies and out hiking, etc.

Mine know that i would help them, but not cover for them for anything serious. We had that discussion once when a friend's kids were in constant trouble. THEY were wondering why the parents kept bailing them out time after time.

Years ago, ODS had too much fun and ended up in the pokey. He called and asked me to pick him up at some crazy hour early in the morning. I went the 30 miles and picked him up, but I didn’t help him clean up his mess afterward, he had to do all that on his own.

Interesting comment on "another site" that GP may be in the area between Victor, Idaho and Yellowstone.
Did anyone actually, physically SEE her in Yellowstone Park?? Or did they just see the closed doors van parked there in Yellowstone at the very end of August? She may not have made it to Wyoming.

I don't have babies yet.. so I am only speculating.. the majority here seems to agree. So I hope his parents do as well 🙏 The moral obligation outweighs the desire to protect one's child from their own actions.. afterall what kind of lessons are we teaching them otherwise?

I'm all for accountability, my conscious would not allow me to do that either... especially when it's another's life we are talking about..
