Texas father still looking for answers, justice in 2010 death of Hailey Dunn

The disappearance of 13-year-old middle school student Hailey Dunn in Colorado City hits its nine-year anniversary this month with her father, Clint Dunn, still looking for answers.

"I feel like I'm left in the darkness because law enforcement is not communicating with me at all," said Clint Dunn, speaking via telephone this week. "... This needs to move forward."

Hailey's death remains unsolved, though her remains were found in 2013 in Scurry County.

Investigators named Shawn Adkins, the live-in boyfriend of Hailey's mother, Billie Jean Dunn, at the time of the teen's disappearance, the primary person of interest, according to Reporter-News archives. He has not been charged with a crime in the case.

Clint Dunn said Thursday that law enforcement officials had indicated to him that when a body was found, an arrest would be made.

"I want to know why that hasn't happened and who do I need to get in here to try to help," he said.

Clint Dunn has secured a private investigator, he said, and as tips are received, they are passed on to authorities.

But return replies are few, if any, he said.

"We don't even know who's got the case right now," he said. "... We've called everybody — the FBI, the Texas Rangers, (an investigator) that was over the case for so long in Scurry County. ... I just want to know why they haven't brought this to trial yet. Why hasn't there been a court date?"

I followed this case from the beginning, until a few years ago. Long story. Anyway, I always suspected Shawn was the one responsible. Wasn't too sure about Billie.. I doubt that she was a part of the kidnapping and murder itself, but she did try to cover for him and that has always bothered me.,
Such a beautiful girl, it's a shame that she had to lose her life to that creep.

I followed this case really close in the beginning, too. Shawn was definitely on my radar, especially after we found out where she was! I’d still like to know what Billie was thinking? Did she think that maybe he would tell her what happened by being close to him? How could you do that though, someone you suspect of disappearing your own child.

Hailey Dunn case featured on popular true crime network

The case of Hailey Dunn, a teenager whose 2010 disappearance rattled West Texas and was featured on news programs across the country, received more national attention Wednesday evening.

The case was one of two featured Wednesday on a program called “Still a Mystery” on Investigation Discovery, a popular cable network devoted to true crime stories.

The show featured interviews with family and friends, including Hailey’s father Clint, as well as former Midland-based reporter Jennifer Kastner, and Erica Morse, who took up the case as a private investigator.

The episode starts from Hailey’s disappearance in late December 2010 and follows leads in the case up until the show’s filming, which took place last year, according to a post from the Who Killed Hailey Dunn Facebook page.

Titled “Still a Mystery: The Death of Innocence,” the show does not provide an update at the end stating Shawn Adkins was arrested for Hailey Dunn’s death in June 2021, although the producers were made aware of the arrest the day it happened, according to the Who Killed Hailey Dunn Facebook page.

Near the end of the episode, the narrator states that Hailey’s mother, Billie Jean Dunn, declined their requests to be interviewed, and that Shawn Adkins didn’t return any of their messages.

So they were aware of the arrest and update and yet didn't add it to the end of the show... Whatever their reason is for that, I hope it is a good one like maybe hoping someone will come forward to offer more independent evidence... Otherwise I do not get why they wouldn't...

11-year anniversary of Hailey Dunn disappearance marked by monumental break in case

Colorado City teen Hailey Dunn was last seen alive December 27, 2010, and the case of her murder and disappearance went cold for more than a decade to follow, but 11 years later, her accused killer is finally behind bars.

Shawn Adkins, former live-in boyfriend of Hailey’s mother Billie Dunn, was arrested for Murder in June in connection to the case.

Shawn Adkins indicted on murder, tampering with evidence charges in Hailey Dunn case

Eleven years after the disappearance of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn in Colorado City, the longtime person of interest in the case, Shawn Casey Adkins, has been indicted on charges of murder and tampering with physical evidence by intentionally and knowingly concealing a human corpse, according to court records.

Dunn disappeared in December of 2010 when she was just 13 years old. Nearly three years later her body was found near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County.

The indictments came down on Dec. 30, 2021, in the 32nd Judicial District Court and show Shawn Casey Adkins is accused of striking Hailey Dunn in the head with an unknown object causing her death on Dec. 26, 2010. This is the first mention of a cause of death from any official or court document since Hailey’s body was found.

Documents: Hailey Dunn struck in head with blunt object, suspect indicted on multiple charges

New court documents released in the death of Hailey Dunn reveal the Colorado City teen was killed with a blunt object the day before she was officially reported missing in 2010.

The documents detail allegations against suspect Shawn Adkins, who was indicted for Murder and Tampering with Evidence by a Mitchell County Grand Jury December 30.

Investigators believe Adkins killed 13-year-old Hailey by “striking her in the head with an unknown blunt object” on December 26, 2010.

Adkins is also accused of “intentionally and knowingly concealing a human corpse, namely the body of [Hailey Dunn], with the intent to impair its availability as evidence in any subsequent investigation or official proceeding related to the offense.”

Community reacts to Shawn Adkins' indictment for the murder of Hailey Dunn
For the first time Monday, court documents revealed how Hailey Dunn died.

We spoke with Emily Strain, the counselor at Colorado Middle School at the time of Hailey’s disappearance. She had this to say as she looked back at what that time was like.

“It’s kind of hard to take it all in and just it’s like one of those things you don’t want to relive but you’re just so thankful that people didn’t give up ... It was an awful feeling you know. It was devastation and we were sad and we were just so hopeful and we just kept trying to be so hopeful all the time," she said.

Mark Merrell, the Mitchell County Judge and Principal of the middle school in 2010, is glad there is finally some justice being served for Hailey.

He told us that she was a student that was involved in everything. She really loved life.

He also said he thinks a suspect finally being held accountable for their actions will help the community heal from Hailey’s death.

“Hopefully there is gonna be another level of closure that comes as a result of this," he said.

Strain told us there is never an easy way to prepare for something like this.

“You never want a book to end the way it did but we are thankful that um that there is some justice,” she said.

We attempted to speak with Shawn Adkins from jail but he declined. His bond set at over a million dollars. No trial date is set yet.

Accused of murdering Hailey Dunn, Shawn Adkins waives right to arraignment

Shawn Adkins, the man accused of kidnapping and killing 13-year-old Hailey Dunn in 2010, has waived his right to be arraigned.

According to the Who Killed Hailey Dunn Facebook page, Adkins was scheduled to have the charges against him read aloud in court on Thursday, but that hearing was canceled after he waived that right through his attorney.

Waiving an arraignment is a procedural step that allows the defendant to skip showing up to have the charges read to him and entering a plea. Typically, as part of the waiver, the defendant must acknowledge understanding the charges, confirm the court has his identity correct and that they are of sound mind.

Through his attorney, Shawn Adkins has entered a plea of not guilty on two charges related to the death of 13-year-old Hailey Dunn, according to the Mitchell County District Clerk's office.

The plea was included in a document filed by the attorney to waive Adkin's arraignment hearing scheduled this week.

Adkins Trial Pushed to April 2023

Hailey Dunn’s accused murderer, Shawn Adkins, was granted a continuance to have his trial pushed back to April 11, 2023 at a recent pre-trial hearing at the Mitchell County Courthouse.

The State handed over boxes of additional evidence as well as a hard drive filled with 2 terabytes of new evidence. The new evidence is said to include video interviews.

Adkins’ trial was scheduled to have started on June 28.

As a result of this new evidence, the Defense has requested additional discovery time to go over the evidence. The Defense also suggested that it might not be able to get an impartial hearing at its current location and is expected to file a motion for a change of venue to move the case out of Mitchell County and the 32 District Court. This request must be approved by a judge. If granted, this would further delay justice in the death of Dunn.

Shawn Adkins trial moved from Mitchell County to Nolan County

The Shawn Adkins trial has been moved within the 32nd Judicial District from Mitchell County to Nolan County.

On July 21, 2022, the court found it "in the interest of justice, judicial economy, safety and convenience" to move the trial venue.

The trial was initially set to take place in June of 2022, but was pushed back to April of 2023 after new discovery was submitted by the State.
