New Canaan mom Jennifer Dulos is missing: Here’s what we know

Fotis Dulos, 51, is the estranged husband of Jennifer Dulos, 50. She has been missing since May 24, 2019. Fotis Dulos operates a building company, The Fore Group. He has built custom homes in Fairfield and Litchfield counties and the Farmington Valley. In her initial divorce filing, Jennifer Dulos described her husband’s affinity for water skiing, which she characterized as an “obsession.” She said he insisted on their children training to be world-class water skiers, and had them on a strict training regimen that she believed was dangerous and excessive, and sometimes would go on from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Who commits suicide by lighting themselves on fire? I'm sure it's been done. (Like the guy in Vietnam) However, I've never heard of it before in America.
Usually it's political or religious. I wonder if there was some component of that that hasn't been released.

Also really incomprehensible that this could have been related to Jennifer. I suppose they had to put it out there to avoid dozens or hundreds of phone calls / "tips".

I thought of that too. I wondered when I read it, "did people really think this could be related???" I mean she has been missing too long, she isn't jogging at the park her car was found in :D And the likely perp, her husband, is dead. And I don't see the gf or the atty. going to this park and killing themselves. But I bet you are right, there probably are crazies out there that would make something of it as a connection...

I mean after hearing there are people paying to rent the motel room that the security guard and prisoner shared, anything is possible... Hard to comprehend some people...

I never thought, after the very first moment, that this was related to Jennifer Dulos. But can certainly see why they had to make it a point to say it wasn’t.

Jennifer Dulos disappearance spotlighted on 'My Favorite Murder' podcast

Between recent documentaries and retellings through film, the media industry has not shied away from covering the Jennifer Dulos disappearance.

Most recently, the acclaimed true crime podcast "My Favorite Murder" spotlighted the case in an episode that aired last Thursday. The podcast's 341st episode, entitled "If You Were Godzilla...," begins with hosts Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff going through the facts of the case. The duo discusses how Jennifer Dulos and her estranged husband, Fotis Dulos, met as well as some of the marital issues that preceded Jennifer Dulos' eventual disappearance.

Though Hardstark and Kilgariff mostly kept to the facts of the case, citing sources such as the Stamford Advocate and Vanity Fair, the duo theorized answers to the question that many people have regarding the case: Where is Jennifer Dulos?

Oh it does. But it does seem like a terrible way to commit suicide. Alot of times the person does not succeed and survives to be left permanently disfigured. That's awful. I'm glad this idiot suffered though. There was a man who just died in his sleep that was bullied, And set himself on fire to commit suicide as a teen.

I tried to find the article. Ugh. Dangit. I did find, A man set himself on fire in April in front of the Supreme Court. In Colorado 2019, A teen committed suicide in the school cafeteria by lighting himself on fire. There are more. I see most of the time it's due to bullying. Even a 6 yr old. More disturbing are articles that came up of bullies setting their targets on fire.

Dulos and suicide seems so questionable to me. There were others that probably helped him kill his wife or knew of it and maybe he had to go. I don't like going to those kinds of theories but this one was an odd one. Kind of in the way Epstein's suicide likely had quite a few breathing a big sigh of relief...

Police: Stained rug pulled from Farmington River not linked to Jennifer Dulos

State police said Monday that a stained rug a social media influencer found in the Farmington River is not connected with missing New Canaan mother Jennifer Farber Dulos.

The stain on the rug was not blood, police said in a news release.

“After investigating for several hours, detectives tested several large, irregular brownish-red stains on the rug and a presumptive test determined they were not blood,” state police said. “Detectives have found no evidence of the rug being related to any criminal case.”

Police also said detectives learned that rugs are often brought to the river to help kayakers launch their boats.

STAMFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A man charged in connection with the death of a missing New Canaan mother is back in jail after being released on bond in 2021.

Kent Mawhinney was the former attorney of Fotis Dulos, Jennifer Dulos’ estranged husband. He was originally released from jail last year in order to visit his dying father.

Fotis Dulos was accused of killing Jennifer after she went missing in May 2019. He died by suicide in January 2020.

Her body has not been found.

Mawhinney faces charges of conspiring to murder Jennifer Dulos after authorities said he allegedly helped Fotis Dulos construct an alibi.

Fotis Dulos’ former girlfriend, Michelle Traconis, has also been charged.

Mawhinney was back in jail Monday. His bond was increased to $1.5 million and he remains on the trial list, according to the Stamford Judicial District Court Clerk’s Office. The increase was over an accusation regarding his ankle monitor.

Michelle Troconis’ defense attorney files for dismissal of all charges, change of prosecutors in Jennifer Dulos case

The defense for Michelle Troconis, charged in connection with the death of Jennifer Farber Dulos, has filed a motion to dismiss all charges against her after state prosecutors attempted this month to disqualify her lawyer so he could potentially be called as a witness in the court proceedings.

Troconis’ lawyer, attorney John Schoenhorn, also claims in court documents that state prosecutors “impermissibly and deliberately violated the constitutional rights” of Troconis by reviewing, photographing and sharing the contents of a box of potential evidence that could be subject to attorney-client privilege.

“I believe it’s completely meritless and it seems like an effort to interfere with my client’s constitutional right to counsel of her choice,” Schoenhorn said in a phone interview.

The motion claims the alleged conduct by the prosecution and members of the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crimes Squad (WDMCS) “has tainted the prosecution and subsequent investigation.”

The defense also filed a motion to compel, claiming the prosecution has taken too long to forward evidence in relation to at least nine requests filed between June 2019 and March 2022.

The defense’s motion will be heard at Troconis’ next court appearance on Nov. 29 or Nov. 30, according to Schoenhorn Tuesday.

Troconis is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, evidence tampering and conspiring to hinder the police investigation by disposing of evidence, according to court records.

Dulos case: Will attorney for key defendant be removed?

A hearing is expected to occur this week on whether the attorney for the key defendant in the disappearance and death of New Canaan mother Jennifer Dulos should be removed from the case.

Prosecutors have filed a motion to disqualify attorney Jon Schoenhorn, who represents Michelle Troconis, citing that he is likely to be a witness in the impending trial and remaining as Troconis’ attorney would be a conflict of interest.

Former attorney charged in connection to Jennifer Dulos’ death out on bond for 2nd time

A man charged in connection to the disappearance and presumed death of a New Canaan mother has been released from jail Thursday after a judge lowered his bond, according to court records.

Kent Mawhinney’s bond was reduced from $1.5 million to $246,000. He will be on house arrest, along with being ordered to have GPS and electronic monitoring.

Mawhinney is the former attorney of Fotis Dulos, the estranged husband of Jennifer Dulos. Fotis Dulos is accused of killing Jennifer after she went missing in May 2019.

State prosecutors have filed a motion to have the courtroom closed to the public during an upcoming hearing in the case of Michelle Troconis, the ex-girlfriend of Fotis Dulos, and have any records related to the hearing sealed, records show.

The state filed the motion with the Superior Court in the Stamford judicial district on Feb. 9, ahead of an impending privilege waiver hearing that is set to take place sometime between March 9 and March 16, prosecutors said in the motion.

The motion, signed by Assistant State’s Attorney Sean P. McGuinness, said the hearing is expected to cover two issues: whether a cover letter written by Troconis’ attorney Jon Schoenhorn to attorney Tara Knight falls under the category of privileged communication and, if it does, whether that privilege should be waived.

STAMFORD — A judge has agreed to consider closing the courtroom while discussing whether certain evidence in the Jennifer Dulos case, including a sweatshirt and a letter from defense attorney Jon Schoenhorn, can remain sealed.

A hearing will be held March 16 in state Superior Court of Stamford where a judge will hear arguments on whether the courtroom should be closed to the public for a hearing to determine if a letter written by Schoenhorn is confidential under attorney-client privilege.

If the letter, which was inside a box with a sweatshirt possibly connected with the 2019 death and disappearance of the New Canaan mother of five, is determined to be a piece of evidence in the case, Schoenhorn could be disqualified from representing Michelle Troconis.

A judge has been asked to disqualify all of the attorneys involved in the case over a blue sweatshirt that allegedly contained DNA from an employee of Fotis Dulos, who died by suicide in 2020 while facing murder and other charges in his estranged wife's death.

Michelle Troconis, who is charged in connection to the disappearance and presumed death of Jennifer Dulos, is again trying to get her GPS ankle monitor removed. Her attorney Jon Schoenhorn appeared in Stamford Superior Court Thursday without his client, whose appearance was waived. It came one day after Schoenhorn filed a new motion calling the anklet "legally unjustifiable."

<snip>
The judge set a hearing on the ankle monitor for April 6. You can read the motion here.
