JOSHUA "JJ" VALLOW, TYLEE RYAN, TAMMY DAYBELL, & CHARLES VALLOW: State of Idaho/Arizona vs. Lori & Chad Daybell *GUILTY*

1580704661510.png

Police seem to be no closer to finding 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan than they were when this story began months ago.

Since that time, the story has gained international attention as it’s taken twists and turns involving a purported cult, dead spouses, delusions of divinity and preparing for the end of the world. Despite all the angles, and the ever-growing number of people related to the case, the facts remain essentially the same as when it was first announced.

The two children remain missing and the parents, Lori (Vallow) Daybell, and her new husband, Chad Daybell, refuse to disclose their whereabouts to police. Both have been named persons of interest in the disappearance of the children. Law enforcement is also investigating the deaths of the Daybells’ previous respective spouses, Charles Vallow and Tammy Daybell, though neither Chad nor Lori have been named suspects in those cases.

I just can't get over this type of betrayal, even though I was stunned when my ex said he hadn't loved me for a few years, yet showed total devotion to me up until the day before. Good reason I'm single, tell you what!
It must take quite a type to pull that off. I don't know what's worse, being that blindsided or suspecting your spouse is cheating or lying or pretending all is fine until they just abruptly surprise you out of the blue one day.

The Daybells lived outside of Rexburg for about four years when in 2019, October, Tammy announced she was coming home alone. It was a few weeks after Tylee and JJ were last seen (I don't believe this was known yet then though). It was unusual for her to drive down without Chad but he said he was busy working. It was a fun visit, she was happy. Tammy stayed overnight and said goodbye and headed back to Idaho and this was the last time Samantha saw Tammy alive again.

I feel like this trip, which was suggested by Chad, and the trip to Yellowstone for Tylee & JJ, were set up as a "goodbye to the world" event from Chad and Lori.

I think so too. I think in some weird way, he patted himself on the back for ensuring Tammy saw her family and vice versa one last time. However, I also think though the timing had to do with needing to bury the children on the property, etc.

With the kids, I have even thought it might have been one last "pleasure" outing, again, some weird thought they have like they were "thoughtful". On the other hand, I am unsure to this day that that trip was not part of what happened to Tylee.

During those four years outside of Rexburg, Tammy embraced a quiet life of service to her faith, to her students and her family. A week after that quick visit to see her family, in her own driveway, when a guy wearing a ski mask suddenly standing in front of her, shot at her several times with what she thought was a paintball gun. She posted on FB about it. Her sister said she kind of played it off a bit, like a prank maybe she thought... The deputies who responded thought the same. Ten days later she passed away in her sleep on October 19th and her sister got a phone call from Chad. Chad told her she'd been sick, had a coughing fit and passed away. She says he sounded upset and devastated. She was crying and he was crying. Just 49 years old, slim, fit and as far as her sister knew, perfectly healthy. Samantha asked about an autopsy and Chad's response was well, she's already over at the mortician and they said there was no need to have an autopsy.

Funeral at LDS ward in Springville, Utah, back home. Samantha says she never got to talk to Chad during funeral about Tammy or what happened at the end and in hindsight, she wonders if he was avoiding talking to her.

Chad said to Samantha after Tammy died that it was going to be too hard to live where Tammy and he had so he was going to stay with a friend. LORI as it turned out. Then they cover the finding she had picked out two wedding rings before Tammy even died. Weeks passed and Tammy's family tried to cope with her death and Jason, the BIL, got a call from Chad. Chad had taken a trip to Hawaii, they thought to grieve. He said I have something I need to tell you, but don't tell anybody, I got married when I was in Hawaii. Jason says he sat there for a good five seconds then said to Chad, "excuse me, you did what??". Chad repeated it.

Samantha says it was shocking to hear, Tammy had only been gone a month, she thought is the grief clouding his judgment, who does that? She says too soon for him to get over her sister. She asked him why he would do that. He said he had known her from before and she understood what he was going through because she had lost a spouse through like "a heart attack" is what he told them.

Samantha did some searching on the internet and found her name was not Lori Ryan (I guess what they were told, hmmm), it was Lori Vallow. She found out her husband was shot, not died from a heart attack. She was wondering if it was the same Lori. She also found a Lori Vallow that had done podcasts with Chad... She had one warning bell after another and realized something was seriously wrong here. She felt she was being lied to, started to rethink what happened to her sister and did not like it.

There is still about 17 minutes left. Slow but sure, I'll get through it. Lol at least I am not flooding with it all at once the play by play.

While much is repetitive, Tammy's sister and her husband are new even if some of what they learned we knew, we hear their take on it and some other things they expereinced. I just figure since this is all chronological and a pretty good show of keeping it all clear and in order, it will be a record of most all to date.

Next is the recorded conversation etc. with Mel Gibb I believe. Taking a break though for now.

Tammy's family, reeling from her death and then Chad's marriage and the alarm bells, hoped that was the end of such shocks but then a few weeks later, Chad calls to see if the family knew anything about Tammy being exhumed. They did not know. [I am guessing he called them as they lived there and he did not?]. The family was shocked again but It ended up being true.

Investigators exhumed her, tested it and reburied her the same day. Samantha grilled Chad about this new wife of his. She said tell me about her, does she have children. He told her her children were grown and they will be empty nesters. Not true as we know and now we are into what we all know, the Woodcocks calling for a welfare check on the kids where Lori says he is in Arizona and of course there is body cam footage. Now to Melanie and how she gets a phone call out of the blue from Chad telling her Rexburg PD would call, not to pick up and that Lori was going to tell PD JJ was with Melanie. We all know this so well I won't go into it all, just that Melanie did not lie for them, told them she didn't have JJ and didn't know where Tylee was. Police returned with search warrant, finding Chad and Lori gone, back to Hawaii, no sign of kids. Melanie began cooperating with the police investigation and as we know, recorded a call with Chad and Lori. We all know Melanie put Lori on the spot some about all the deaths and Lori not following the good but the dark.

After the phone call, Melanie flashed back to an earlier conversation with Alex. She asked him if she wanted to know what happened to JJ and Alex told her she did not want to know.

Next story gets weirder, Alex dies suddenly in suburban Phoenix at the age of 51. Autopsy says due to blood clots in his lungs.

Police at this time were working furiously to find the children. They approached Samantha and Jason asking if they heard anything from Chad that might help them locate the children. Samantha realizes at that time she was lied to. It is unclear what is meant--I am guessing she meant he had told her Lori's children were grown? Search for kids was about to go nationwide and did.

Chad and Lori's lives were about to be turned upside down as did the lives of many others. Samantha realized that if the kids were gone they were empty nesters as he had told her...

Ten minutes to go yet on the show...

Dateline and others descend on Hawaii. Watching the videos we have seen of them turning around to get away from media.

Samantha said when she saw footage of them walking around in Hawaii, she was livid. As we know, shortly thereafter a judge in Idaho ordered she produce her children and when she did not, she was arrested. Still refused to tell where kids were. Chad followed back to states, back into the home he had shared with Tammy.

June 9, 2020. Kids missing eight months and Reporter Nate Eaton got a text from a friend while on his morning run., advising they were raiding Chad's house and tons of cops were there. Nate got it confirmed by the sheriff. Roads to home were blocked. Nate raced to airport and grabbed a helicopter. He thought they would be seizing things from inside the home and he looked down and realized they were in the back yard. He saw a grid and dogs and knew they were not focused on the home but on the property/yard. Chad was watching from his daughter's house across the street when he received his regular call from Lori from jail. I think we all know that call, her baby voiced call. He sounds despondent and tells her where they are searching... It was their last phone call.

After they dug up first body, Chad left. Police followed and pulled him over. Chad was charged with the charges they are facing and soon Lori was as well.

All the theories of the months were gone. Some still had hope they were hidden but alive, others thought they were buried in Yellowstone. They were killed and then buried among pets on Chad and Tammy's property. Tylee dismembered and burned.

Jason and Samantha watched it unfold on TV with the rest of us and were sickened, physically ill. Annie (Joe's sister) says that is when the reality set in, she thought she was prepared for the worst but it was so much worse than she had imagined, the way they were treated. It came out at hearing that it was Chad who gave it away. After months of pouring over his texts which were generally short and mundane, they came across the raccoon text (shooting it and burying it in the pet cemetery) to Tammy. That text was sent the day after Tylee was last seen alive.

Investigators needed to know where the pet cemetery was and they talked to some family members and found it was near the fire pit on their property. They also knew then Alex's phone had pinged at the location of the pet cemetery.

Phone records showed Alex had spent several hours at the pet cemetery that day. Nate Eaton said they with GPS location could show where Alex spent his time in Chad's back yard, within feet. They also found two weeks after that, Alex's phone had pinged on Chad's property again, this time the morning after JJ's last sighting. The FBI agents could not miss the connection. They found two burial sites.

Chad and Lori pled not guilty to all charges. They are held in separate jails each on a million bucks bond. Neither has been charged with murder even though they are prime suspects.

Back to the mental health experts who had warned the court about Lori more than a decade before.... They learned what happened to Tylee and JJ and it was just too much. The male says he actually became nauseous, sick to his stomach, he represented Tylee and she was found in a pet cemetery. The woman says it could have been prevented. She is sorry that the male expert and herself were not listened to and that leaves two children dead.

Summarizing with Joe, that Phoenix PD said they would review the case after everything and the conclusion was the same, natural causes. Annie still feels it may not be a coincidence, his death, given all that has happened.

As to Charles, Chandler PD has told Dateline there is still an active investigation into his death and that it will likely be referred to prosecutors within months. Nate Eaton says this is a tricky one because witnesses are gone including Tylee, JJ, an uncooperative Lori who is still here, and Alex who is dead but is allegedly the one who pulled the trigger.

Tammy. Autopsy was completed a month ago but results have not been made public. Chad in the phone call with Melanie Gibb had insisted her death was natural, she had been sick, he begged her to go to doctor... Samantha says slow wheel of justice is like grief with good moments and very sad moments. Says Tammy was amazing and wants her to be remembered and not forgotten.

They end with "remembered but not forgotten" naming Tammy, Charles, Tylee, JJ, innocent and unaware and pictures of them. They say they encountered two people who believed they themselves heavenly but instead left death in their wake.

And that's a wrap folks. I know it was lengthy but I know I was pretty thorough and it brings the entire case and events up to date and in chronological order pretty much. There was some new sprinkled throughout and many pictures not seen before (that I recall). People that have not talked before, etc.

Thank you so much for posting this! I often wonder what other family members are thinking and some of these cases. Now we know that they aren’t in the dark, and I appreciate his family speaking out. Hopefully it will help other families dealing with similar horrific incidents.

Empty nesters! 😡. There’s the motive right there! And no insanity defense for them.

I hope the social workers aren’t beating themselves up. They are the ones that did the best job! It’s a lesson for all.

Sounds like they first settled in Springville and lived right around the corner from her sister Samantha and her then new husband Jason. They were the only brother-in-laws in the family and Jason admits looking up to him, in a way like a mentor. Chad was in charge of the local cemetery. While he was there Jason said is where Chad started to get some ideas that he had a story to tell and he'd like to tell it. So Chad started writing books and Tammy, the one who grew up with her nose in books, helped him launch a mom and pop publishing company. Samantha said Tammy loved to help the business so Chad could just focus on his writing. Until they went BANKRUPT that is. That's when Tammy started working at the elementary school. It was to help pay bills and supplement the income. She loved it though per her sister.

In 2015, the year of their 25th wedding anniversary, Chad told Tammy he'd had a revelation. God was telling him to take her and their five kids and move four hours north to Rexburg, Idaho. Samantha said at first she was not happy about it but as they do in their religion Tammy prayed about it to see what she was to do and went along. Tammy I guess blossomed in Idaho, enjoying the rural property where she raised animals, had a big garden, and found her fulfilling job as a school librarian. As far as her sister knew, she was really happy.

I will pause here just to say it is nice to hear a bit about Tammy's childhood. However, I am also struck that apparently Chad and Tammy lived where they grew up and around her family (and his I imagine) until he had this Rexburg revelation 25 years into their marriage and he moved them.
You know, it makes me wonder if he had a little side piece in 2015.

It really was a well done show I thought. I am not much for anything on TV but I think a lot of work went into this. Hearing from other family members and getting to know a bit more about the victims instead of the evil perps was refreshing. Yet the show covered all but it did not dwell on only Chad and Lori by any means, it did on their actions and the victims.

I am sorry to say it but even had the court taken Tylee, I doubt they would have taken Colby, he was not Joe's. And I don't see Lori stopping there if she had lost the Tylee. She would have fought back or found another game... I hope these two don't beat themselves up either but I do wonder about any judge who went against not one but two experts in his decision...

I honestly myself have thought this has possibly went on longer than we think or they admit to.... Also, even if not Lori... Lori knew of Chad before she ever met him from podcasts and books didn't she? I know Melanie Gibb knew him longer or so they state...

It seems pretty clear that something changed. Chad stays for 25 years of married life near Tammy's family and is apparently happy to do so and then all of a sudden has visions and callings to move his family to Rexburg...? He at least definitely had some type of plans from that point forward...
