Deputies searching for pregnant Pierce County woman who disappeared under suspicious circumstances

A Pierce County family is desperate for answers in the search of a missing pregnant woman who seemingly vanished Tuesday morning.

Loved ones say it was the ultimate red flag when Kassanndra Cantrell, 33, failed to show up to her first ultrasound this week, something she’d so been looking forward, something they say she wouldn’t willingly miss.

“This is not normal, she wouldn’t just vanish…I just need her back," said Marie Smith, Cantrell's mother.

It’s been an agonizing four days since Smith last saw her daughter. It was early Tuesday morning when Smith was heading out to work.

"She just said 'have a good day at work' I said 'thank you'. She said 'love you' and I said 'love you'. And that was the last time," said Smith about her last conversation with her daughter.

About an hour later, at 8:45 a.m. a security camera caught her driving away in her 2014 white Mazda sedan from her and mother’s Parkland home. The only plan her mom knew she had that day was at some point to go to the grocery store.

“I don't think that's where she was going when she left. Everything seemed to indicate she was going to see somebody because if she was going to the grocery store she would’ve just put her hair in a ponytail and put on some jeans and headed out, but it was clear she’d taken a shower and gotten dressed. She had taken some extra time, she doesn’t do that just to go grocery shopping," said Smith.

When she didn’t return home later that day or answer any calls, the fear started to sink in. even more so when they discovered her phone was turned off. “She never turns her phone off, and she wouldn’t stop all her social interactions. It doesn’t make any sense, something has happened.”

The nightmare deepened when Cantrell didn’t show up for her very first ultrasound appointment on Wednesday afternoon.

“She wouldn’t have missed it for the world, it doesn’t make any sense for her to be gone at all," said Smith.

Smith said her daughter was about three months pregnant. The father is a friend, and though unexpected, for Cantrell it was the most welcomed surprise.

“When she found out she was thrilled because she wasn’t sure that she'd have a chance to have a baby and so she was really excited, she already picked out names," said Smith.

It was a plea deal. The prosecutors may have been insecure about getting first degree murder with the evidence they had. He was probably worried about getting first degree murder with the evidence they had. I agree with @SheWhoMustNotBeNamed it seems longer than normal. However, not enough in my opinion. If the theory I have is true, then maybe it's the best they could do.
Colin Patrick Dudley, 40, was sentenced in Pierce County Superior Court to 26 years, 8 months in prison for first-degree murder in the domestic violence killing of 33-year-old Kassandra Cantrell. That sentence is the high end of the standard sentencing range for similar cases.

This says it is for first degree murder and that this is the high end of the standard sentencing range, plea deal or not. I am saying if this is the high end for first degree murder, that sentencing range is LIGHT these days for first degree murder. If a perp was 18 he would be out at the age of 44 AND for all we know there is the possibility they won't serve it all. It is ridiculous for the highest degree of murder.

What theory do you have?

You say this is maybe the best they could do but what would be higher than first degree? Not following what you mean.

CBS’ ‘48 hours’ to feature Tacoma murder of Kassandra Cantrell. How to watch
A Parkland woman’s disappearance and murder by her ex-boyfriend in Tacoma will soon be featured in an episode of CBS News’ true-crime series “48 hours.”

CBS’s hour-long documentary — set to air April 8 at 10 p.m. Pacific — promises to show “never before seen” footage of the man who left her car there, Colin Dudley, a former boyfriend of Cantrell. Investigators with Pierce County Sheriff’s Department uncovered surveillance video of Dudley leaving the car there dressed all in black except for blue surgical gloves.

It will be broadcast on television Saturday evening on CBS. Viewers can also watch anytime by streaming “48 Hours” on Paramount+. A preview of the feature is on CBS’ website.

Not sure why as I really don't have the time and should catch up with other things but I started watching this and watched til the end. I agree with her family about the system being broken. And imo they had a TON of evidence here and NO reason to make a deal, a lot more evidence than in some cases by far.

Tear jerking at the end. I LOVE that her brother opened the store, a dream they shared.

I will never understand a man like the one convicted here.

He cheats with no problem.

He doesn't want to be a father but he screws two women, hiding it from the one at least that he is living with.

The one he is cheating with gets pregnant.

He kills her and HIS child.

Because why? He doesn't want the cheating found out? And doesn't want the child?

Well okay, but murder got found out and your gf found out about the cheating too. And now great, you don't have a child. Problem solved right? And you have a new home and lost it all anyhow. Say hello to those in your cell block dumbarse.

And I'm not convinced the gf didn't know but I'm also not saying she did. It's anyone's guess and likely will remain that way.

He should have been tried and given LWOP. This was very planned and thought out with ample evidence.

They had so much evidence! prosecutor is a coward . Jmo
I agree. When they were saying why and what they didn't have, I thought are you kidding me after we'd just watched a whole show on all they DID have. They had him dead to rights. They always want that smoking gun, that witness, that DNA, the whole enchilada or they think it is iffy.

Honestly making a deal is often they just don't want to do the work and try the case imo.

I knew it! I think most people did. Didn't want GF to find out. Didn't want a child. Sooo...Just kill them. Then keep your **** to yourself. Or a condom. Huh. Seems simple. This has happened so many times. He probably told her to abort it and she wouldn't. And/or the famous "It's not mine".But knew it would be proven and didn't want to pay child support. Scumbag. POS!

You can BET on he told her to abort and claimed or asked if his. It is soooooo common. Most don't kill but do everything short trying to force an abortion.

If he is so sure he doesn't want kids and even the new gf said so (IF she told the truth, he may just have not wanted them with either of them), then go GET YOURSELF FIXED. You are that sure you never want any then keep Peter zipped up in your jeans because even condoms aren't 100 percent, fixed is the closest. But WHO wants to bet he was one of those that didn't like to wear one as it "doesn't feel the same"...

He DESERVED LWOP NOT a DEAL. HE PLOTTED and he killed TWO people. A pregnant woman AND HIS BABY.

Don't anyone blame the investigators because they worked their butts off and brought the prosecution all the evidence, a TON of it. Many times LE hates it when they work their butts off and get their heart in a case to get justice only to have their county prosecutor NOT bring the case to trial and cut a deal.

There was a case I read about the other day. A man killed his 67 yr old mother. Took 226 selfies over the course of days of him slowly torturing and beating her to death. Then with her dead body up to 3 days later. Posted them too!!! He got a plea for 3rd degree murder. 10 YEARS!!!!! I couldn't find any good reason for it. In stark contrast, A Texas man was sentenced to 70 years for spitting at police officers during his arrest. HUH?! DON'T SPIT IN TEXAS! It was an old "Blue law" in Texas that you couldn't spit on a sidewalk on a Sunday. IIRC, It was a law put into effect during the "Wild West" Days. Minnesota, It was illegal to hang men's and women's laundry on the same clothesline. Yeah.....That makes sense. Well it is MINNESOTA!!! Did they think that's why people had so many children back then?.

Crazy. Absolutely crazy. This world makes no sense at all sometimes, increasingly so.

THIRD degree murder for torture and murder? Are you kidding me?!! Outrageous.

And yes then someone sits for decades in prison who never KILLED a soul or would have. Spitting, drugs, DUI, etc. NOT that some of that/those don't deserve time but when no one died. they deserve more than someone that mruders?? Or stealing a car... More time than murder.

IDIOTS run this world. Just sayin'...

I think DUI's do for sure!!! Drugs, There are too many cases that the defendant was handed prison time and taking up space for violent criminals.
I think it all depends on severity and how many and the record and level of a DUI, etc. as to if they deserve as much time as murder but they sure don't deserve MORE time than murder. Same with drugs. IF someone is just doing something themselves and not too overboard that is one thing but of doing worse ones and dealing, that's another thing. I certainly am not saying such doesn't deserve any time but the overall crime that deserve the most is generally murder and is the reason it is one without a statute of limitation. They got that right but they are now not sentencing what they should in many.

My great uncle and great paternal grandfather were killed by drunk drivers. I have NO TOLERANCE FOR THAT!!!!
I don't disagree, I say that in every case of such. I'm talking if no one was injured, etc. And I'm not saying no time is deserved either. I'm saying MURDER deserves the longest time and imo killing someone by driving drunk is murder. I'm talking what jails and prisons are full of with people who didn't murder but yes may have had a DUI or stolen something to support a drug habit etc. but didn't KILL anyone.

I watched this one earlier today and I’m infuriated. They said they didn’t want to go to trial because there was no eyewitness? Are you kidding me?

Is Washington becoming as soft on crime as Oregon’?

I’m glad the family is filing a civil suit.

Yeah and isn't an eyewitness actually one of the least reliable things?? Human error and all. Doesn't matter because it was just the thing/excuse he pulled out of thin air when asked.

I too would be furious were I the family. Heck what am I talking about, I AM furious.

The show was well done. I had no idea of course that was coming at the end. One watches the entire show with all this proof and all this work done and such a great case and then you find they did a plea deal and this is the excuse/reasnon, just as you're thinking what a "rock solid" case. They never said a word or dissed him--the show I mean, just led to it and showed how case ended and left us to feel OUTRAGED just as the family rightfully is.

I didn't catch the part about a civil suit. I'm glad they are pursuing one too.
