Many of you know that I had a family member who heard voices. He finally succumbed to his injuries after he poured gasoline on his head and lit himself on fire. He could have set a whole neighborhood on fire. The voices told him to do it, and it’s not that he just heard them, but he felt he had to follow their instruction. I don’t understand it, and you don’t understand it.

I also have a friend who has a daughter who is suffering from the voices. She has committed quite a few crimes against people in this local area, and they finally were able to put her in a mental facility. They kept her out there for 30 days, handed her some medication, and put her back out on the street. Of course she doesn’t take her medication now. She’s mentally ill!

I just want to say these things before somebody jumps on the family. My heart goes out to them because I’m sure they did try to get him help. Why didn’t he get it? Now that’s the question I have. Probably for another thread because this one is about finding this guy before he kills anyone else.
I'm sorry for your troubles and also your friend's troubles. You're 100% right. Get so tired of seeing family members being blamed for the sins of others.

Well, huh. That's curious. Several deaf individuals have been reported as victims of his rampage.

Side note. Before anyone even thinks of equating being deaf or HOH with mental illness, let me just stop ✋ you now.
I am finding that whole explanation bizarre. Especially neither Army, family or police thinking about restricting or confiscating his weapons.

He bought the weapon he used this year it says, so maybe they didn't know.

Last night I heard on our news that it was thought he was heading for Canada so the boat and river info makes sense.

I'd like to know how he was in the reserves with that level of hearing loss, too. That's called "military disability". Very bizarre.

While it is true that around 46% of Maine households have guns, you are not allowed to bring them into any establishment that serves alcohol. Not open carry or concealed carry. Both locations served alcohol. So basically, the locations were no gun zones. This is part of Maine gun laws.

The Manager of Schemengees Bar and Grille tried to get at the shooter with a butcher knife. He was killed.

I should add...the law is a bit more nuanced than I outlined in this post. (Sorry for that, moving too fast ) The establishment serving alcohol is required to visibly post on exterior doors that no guns allowed. (which I believe is the case for both of the places the shooter showed up at. still gun free zones).

Also, deer hunting season for Maine residents begins tomorrow. There will be many more people in our woods.

Was it for actual hearing loss or was it the type of hearing "aids" that a lot of people that work in environments that have sudden. loud noises and they interact with the sudden noise and cancel it out. They are actually hearing protection and not hearing aids, but some do call them that and some are custom fit so they block as much noise as possible. You wear them during the entirety of what you are wearing them for and are designed to be able to hear regualarly, so they do amplify normal speech because you don't take them in and out like the types of hearing protection most of us wear that go over your head and cover your ears. They are required to wear that type here on the indoor ranges so their hearing is protected but they can still hear any instruction, etc. This makes much more sense than him having regular type hearing aids.

Well, I'm not sure why they would call them "powerful hearing aids" if they aren't. Or why he would be hearing people talk around him if they were noise canceling gear (and literally naming the people). Plus she said he had severe hearing loss from constant gunfire. It's in the article.

I'm comfortable calling them hearing aids.

Gotcha! I didn't see that part. I just know what the indoor gun ranges here require and many call them that. The military also now uses them in the field. Not sure for how long, but a friend had them and now he got new, fitted ones and since he's LE, he uses them often at their gun range. They are very cool! You can hear normal conversation with them in, but they shut off very suddenly as soon as they detect a certain decibel. I have a cheap(ish) pair that is definitely not custom fit. I can see how if you used them often, the custom fit would be really, really worth it.

They use them to prevent those type of hearing issues.

Thank you. I hope to bring awareness to the fact that the severely mentally ill are not getting any care at all. They may be diagnosed, but then they’re just thrown out to fend for themselves.

It IS 10 eastern, not sure when the news conference is coming.

Suspect in Maine shooting rampage is dead, sources say

The US Army reservist accused of killing 18 people and injuring 13 others in a shooting rampage in a Maine city has been found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a two-day manhunt that terrorized local communities, multiple sources told CNN Friday night.

Robert Card’s body was found in a wooded area near Lisbon, a town about 8 miles from where the shooting took place in Lewiston on Wednesday evening, the sources said. That location is close to a recycling plant Card was recently fired from, a law enforcement source told CNN.

Authorities plan to hold a news conference at 10 p.m. ET Friday.
