Police believe missing Winona woman’s disappearance ‘involuntary and suspicious’

Madeline Kingsbury, 26, has been missing since the morning of March 31 when she was last seen at her home in Winona. She was supposed to show up for work that morning but didn’t. Numerous calls and messages from friends and family went unanswered.

A $50,000 reward is now being offered for any information on Kingsbury’s whereabouts.

During the course of the investigation, Winona police know that Kingsbury returned to her residence in Winona after dropping her kids off at daycare around 8:15 a.m. on March 31 in a 2014 dark blue Chrysler Town and Country minivan.

The father of Kingsbury’s children said he left in her minivan around 10 a.m. and when he returned later in the day, she was not home.

Police believe a similar van was seen driving on County Road 12 and Highway 43 in Winona County and then southbound on Highway 43 through the eastern part of Fillmore County. Later, a van similar to Kingsbury’s drove back towards Winona on Highway 43. This occurred during the timeframe of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Police said the van has been parked in her residence since 1:30 p.m. on March 31 and they are not currently looking for the van.

Authorities located her phone, the jacket she wore earlier that morning and her wallet inside the home.

Nothing to date indicates that Kingsbury left on foot or in another vehicle.

Winona Police believe Kingsbury’s disappearance is suspicious and involuntary.

Law enforcement have searched near her residence and along Highway 43 in both Winona and Fillmore counties.

Winona Police have been assisted by other agencies and volunteers. Search efforts included people on foot, in vehicles, on water and air.

@Mel70 you have got to see this one! we may have to go down there. not serious of course.

it's not a crime scene and they can't call her what they called her in life?

I know how some of this goes. the term abuse couldn't be used in our trial. uhm say what?? to this day I cannot fathom that.

now friends can't have a slip of the tongue which IS NOT A SLP, this is what they called her their entire life. how absolutely effing ridiculous.

Gottal love this headline though. Sounds like the language is something outrageous and of course I thought what, swear words?, calling him a POS, what was threatening a mistrial over and how bad were the words the witnesses used? Then you the pasted part and it's over calling her Maddi and calling the home a crime scene!!!!!!

Patting myself on the back as they didn't get a click on their click bait. Never went into the article with their sensational headline.

He's going down just as fast as Leilani Simon went down.

But really how stupid have things gotten? Of course friends and family called her Maddi their entire life. Now they can sit allow worried when on stand if agreed with that they dont' slip and say her name...??

DUMB and beyond belief this can even go on or be complained about.

When is the b.s. going to end AND the experiment that's failed miserably...

If I had a life and time, I'd be picking you up to attend AND talking to reporters about how ludicrous this is. They can't call her Maddi for God's sakes. Who are these people and this world and the ones who don't think such is so ludicrous and ridiculous? It's past time some sane people take over and put an end to b.s. going this far. I knew immediately what you'd think on this stupid arse reporting and claim by the D.

Friends of slain Winona woman detail alleged abuse at murder trial

One friend said she was on a video call with Madeline Kingsbury when Kingsbury’s ex, Adam Fravel, backhanded her. Another said she watched Fravel push Kingsbury as she held her son. Other friends said Fravel told Kingsbury she would not be leaving him with their kids.

A number of Kingsbury’s friends testified Wednesday against Fravel, who is charged in Kingsbury’s death, about times they saw Fravel abuse Kingsbury or bruises they saw on Kingsbury’s body. Prosecutors are seeking to establish a pattern of domestic abuse in Fravel and Kingsbury’s relationship, which is key to one of four murder counts Fravel faces.

At the same time, defense attorneys want to discredit testimony from the friends, saying they may have biased themselves against Fravel during the initial searches for Kingsbury after the young mother disappeared from her Winona home on March 31, 2023. Fravel’s lawyers also seek to dismiss witnesses’ testimony about Kingsbury’s bruising, arguing the bruises happened during sex.

Prosecutors are set to wrap up their case Thursday, and defense attorneys will call witnesses Friday. Closing arguments are scheduled for Monday, followed by jury deliberations.

Defense rests in Madeline Kingsbury murder trial; Adam Fravel declines to testify

A neighbor told law enforcement he saw a slim figure walk around Adam Fravel and Madeline Kingsbury’s property the day she disappeared. Fravel’s brother said he’s never seen Adam angry. And law enforcement testified they searched the area where Kingsbury’s body was found months before it was discovered.

Lawyers for Adam Fravel, 30, made their case Friday in his trial in the killing of 26-year-old Madeline Kingsbury, the Winona woman whose disappearance made national headlines in spring 2023.

Bauer rested the defense’s case just before noon Friday after calling five witnesses. Prosecutors called 68 witnesses over the past four weeks.
Fravel chose not to testify Friday. Closing arguments were pushed back to Nov. 6.

I don't have any doubt here of a guitly verdict. Short of an idiot juror but overall I have great faith in juries. He's toast.

Closings that long off, wow.

NIce break for the jury and the attorneys but then all will have to come back, and the jury deliberate. I don' think it will take this one long.

Judge did not allow some testimony but did allow people who actualy saw the abuse, etc and I'm glad that came in.

Adam Fravel guilty on all four counts in murder of ex-girlfriend Madeline Kingsbury

A jury here found Adam Fravel guilty of murdering his ex-girlfriend Madeline Kingsbury, the Winona woman whose disappearance at the end of March 2023 sparked nationwide interest and a search that drew more than 2,000 volunteers.

Fravel, 30, was charged with four counts of murder after Kingsbury’s body was found in a culvert near a dirt road off Hwy. 43 that June, a few miles from Fravel’s parents’ property. His trial started Oct. 7, and the jury deliberated for about 10 hours before reaching a verdict Thursday morning.

Fravel is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 17.

I have great faith in juries as I said above.

Not surprised.

And HAPPY to hear it!!

Sadly it does not bring her back for her kids nor the rest of her family.

I pray he rots since there is no DP in MN.

Judge seals ‘highly graphic’ evidence from Adam Fravel’s murder trial

In an effort to protect the privacy and emotional needs of Madeline Kingsbury’s family, a judge sealed graphic evidence from Adam Fravel’s murder trial.

During the jury trial, multiple pieces of evidence were presented. Some depicting Kingsbury and Fravel’s minor children, and some of ‘highly graphic’ nature including images from the discovery of Kingsbury’s body and autopsy.

“The privacy interests of the family, coupled with the potential emotional distress caused by the release of these graphic images, outweigh the public interest in their disclosure at this time,” Winona County Judge Nancy Buytendorp wrote in the order.

Fravel will be sentenced in Winona on December 17. Fravel was convicted of two first degree murder charges and faces life in prison.

'Whatever it takes to find Maddi'

A tense silence hung over the courtroom. Sitting there, waiting for the judge to read the verdict felt like an eternity, Ben Klinger said. The Winona County Emergency Management director was seated near family and friends of Madeline Kingsbury on November 7, anxiously waiting until Judge Nancy Buytendorp came to the word “guilty.” The truth of Kingsbury’s disappearance and death was finally affirmed. “You could feel a sigh of relief when she read out the verdict,” Klinger said.

On November 7, Adam Fravel was found guilty of first-degree murder, guilty of taking away a beloved daughter, mother, sister, and friend forever. That loss cannot be set right, but for months after her disappearance, loved ones and the Winona community were reeling from a different kind of anguish: the unknown. Finding Maddi and understanding what happened to her took every resource the Winona Police Department (WPD) had, virtually every resource the state could provide, and all the help fellow first responders and ordinary citizens could offer. “And we may not have had the same result without their help,” WPD Investigator Andy Mohan said.

“I do not recall a case of this magnitude handled by the department, probably ever,” WPD Police Chief Tom Williams said.

Kingsbury went missing on March 31, 2023. She’d last been seen that morning by her ex, Fravel, at the home they still shared while in the process of separating, but she didn’t show up to pick up her two kids from daycare. She didn’t respond to calls and texts from friends and family. That wasn’t like her. “I think everyone in the department, from the initial responding patrol officers to the patrol sergeants to investigations, realized right away that something was wrong,” Williams said.

That kicked off a furious weekend of searching and detective work that would drag on for weeks and months. WPD investigators interviewed Kingsbury’s family and friends as well as Fravel. “[We] got him locked into a story of what he knew,” Williams said. Investigators pulled cell phone records and financial transactions. They started searching a huge geographic area, which at first included Buffalo and Trempealeau counties, the Mississippi River, as well as large swaths of Winona, Houston, and Fillmore counties. They searched the Fravel-Kingsbury home and the Fravel family farm in Mabel, Minn. They put out calls for any video footage and went door-to-door to ask homeowners for footage or suspicious activity. Security cameras and dash cams only retain footage for a short period of time, so getting the word out was urgent, and video wound up being a crucial part of the case, Sergeant Adam Brommerich said. Investigators worked into the night, trying to collect as much information as they could in those crucial first hours and days. “We pretty much lived here for the first couple weeks,” Mohan said.

there is a TON more at the link.

Sentencing December 17th for this POS.

Another good vedicit by a good jury. I don't know why someone like him even goes to trial he left so much evvidence but don't they all try trial?

A short time frame compared to most from arrest to trial.

From what I've seen this was a good woman who ended up with a loser of a man.

I doubt Winona does see much for these kinds of crimes.

It's a beautiful area near the Missisissip and right across the border from WI on the other side.

This stupid man left a ton of evidence and; a full trail but that does not negate the work it took to find it all, and the fact they moved quickly to do so. They called in LE partners, they did the work even with having lost some people, and they obtained video which we see in all to many cases in even bigger areas where they don't even look for such fast enough.

Their frustration was in finding her. But they did. In a culvert so overgrown and hard to access but they did.

This man is going where he deserves to.

I feel for her family and her children.

Again, sentencing December 17th so a nother December date for us all.

RIP Maddie. I'm glad there's been justice but it's all so unfair.

Where is it these absolute losers turned murderers come from... Who play their game and latch on...

Anyhow, it was a fairly long read but a lot more at the link.

May he etc the harshest sentence possible.

Unfortunately there is no DP in MN.

Kingsbury family and friends ask judge to allow media to broadcast Fravel murder sentencing

The family and friends of Madeline Kingsbury are asking the judge to allow the world to see Adam Fravel sentenced for her murder.

Minnesota law sharply limits the audio or visual coverage of court proceedings and requires crime victims to consent in writing to such media coverage in the courtroom. David, Catherine, and Steven Kingsbury have now filed such a request, along with Madeline Kingsbury’s friends Krista Huitgren, Megan Hancock, and Holly Waterston.

Each has filed written permission for the media to broadcast and record their victim impact statements.

Adam Fravel’s sentencing for 1st and 2nd degree murder is set for December 17.

Judge rules Fravel sentencing can be televised

The sentencing of Adam Fravel for killing Madeline Kingsbury will be televised next week.

Judge Nancy Buytendorp issued an order Thursday allowing cameras and recording equipment inside the courtroom to witness Fravel being sentenced for killing Kingsbury in 2023.

19 News and multiple other media outlets had requested permission to broadcast the sentencing.

Minnesota state law usually prohibits cameras in the courtroom for any legal proceedings.

Fravel’s sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday, December 17 at 1:45 p.m. in the Winona County Courthouse.

19 News plans to carry the sentencing on Tuesday.

Madeline Kingsbury case: Adam Fravel sentenced to life in prison

Adam Fravel has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Madeline Kingsbury, who was his former partner and the mother of his two children.

What we know: Fravel appeared in court on Tuesday to be sentenced after being convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree murder with a past pattern of domestic abuse, second-degree murder with intent, and second-degree murder while committing a felony.

First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. In court, the judge handed down that sentence, following remarks from Kingsbury's family and Fravel himself.

What they're saying: Before sentencing, Kingsbury's family made statements to the court, mourning the loss of the Winona mom.

Krista Hultgren, Madeline's mother, talked about how Fravel mistreated Kingsbury while she was alive before taking her life.

"He made her feel unlovable, then he snuffed the life out of her," said Hultgren. "He ripped her from her children, her family, and her friends. All Madeline wanted was a good life with someone who would love her and the kids unconditionally. And she wanted Adam to continue to be involved in the kids' lives, regardless if they were together or not. She felt bad for him but couldn't make herself fall in love with someone who treated her like she was nothing. She wanted and deserved more."

"He's ruined so many lives," she added. "And he took my child from me."

Kingsbury's father concluded that Fravel killed Madeline after Fravel had lost control of her, as she sought a fresh start without Fravel.

"When he realized he couldn't control or manipulate her any longer, he decided to kill her," David Kingsbury explained. "He thought, incredibly, he'd run home to his parents' house and wait it out. He thought no one would care about Madeline. She'd just fade into memory while he'd get away with murder."

David Kingsbury also described a sickening confrontation in court after Fravel's arrest.

"We were engaged in a very public and hotly contested court battle with Fravel for custody of Maddi's children," Kingsbury recounted. "Though he was finally arrested and charged with her murder, this litigation continued. Moments before a video hearing began, the courts camera was live. He noticed we were on the video feed, locked eyes with my wife and I, and smirked at us. Smirked. At that moment, his true nature revealed: resolute cruelty and pure evil. For me, certain proof that he killed Madeline, proof he was glad he did it, and proof that he derived great pleasure from the carnage, destruction, and grief he's caused. His only regret was being held accountable."

Madeline sister and stepsister also spoke to the court about the difficulty as the family navigated through the grief wrought by Fravel.

"The defendant will most likely proclaim his innocence for the rest of his life," sister Megan Hancock said. "Myself, my family, and friends of Madeline do not need him to admit it, because we all know the truth. Perhaps the defendant is happy what has become of my family and what has become of Madeline. To that, I would say: We are not broken. Madeline will forever be remember and loved. Her children will know who their mother is and was. They will also know, when they are old enough, what happened to her and that their father is the monster who took her from them."

The other side: Fravel only made a brief remark to the court after Kingsbury's family members spoke.

"I never caused harm to Maddi," Fravel said. "And I am innocent."

Evil POS.

I'd watch it but just do not need what is sure to be heartwrenching right now. Reading what they said was hard enough.

Very glad he got life. And I HOPE life means life.
