Joran van der Sloot is expected to face arraignment this morning in a Birmingham federal courtroom on charges he tried to extort the mother of missing Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.

Follow us here throughout the day for updates.

Van der Sloot was extradited on Thursday from Peru, where he is serving 28 years for the 2010 murder of college student Stephany Flores, to Alabama.

The 35-year-old was whisked from a Birmingham airport to the Hoover City Jail.

He is expected to be arraigned at 11 a.m. today at the federal courthouse in Birmingham.

Although van der Sloot has long been suspected in the disappearance and death of the Mountain Brook High School graduate visiting Aruba in 2005, he has never been charged in connection to her death.

However, federal authorities in Alabama contend that in 2010 van der Sloot exploited the fear of Holloway’s mother, Beth, that she would never find her daughter’s body or know what happened to her unless she paid him $250,000.

For an initial payment of $25,000, he would take the Holloway representative to the location of Natalee’s body. Once the body was recovered and confirmed to be Natalee, he said, he would then collect the remaining $225,000.

“I am hopeful some small semblance of justice will finally be realized may finally be realized, even though no act of justice will heal the pain we’ve endured,” a statement from Beth Holloway on Thursday read.

“For 18 years, I have lived with the unbearable pain of Natalee’s loss. Each day has been filled with unanswered questions and a longing for justice that has eluded us at every turn,” Holloway said.

“At the end of this, he has to be returned to Peru,” Van der Sloot’s attorney in Peru, Maximo Altez told The Associated Press. He will spend “at most two years in the United States.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Joran van der Sloot pleaded not guilty in federal court during a Friday morning arraignment hearing on extortion charges, entering court with a smile as he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in connection with the 2005 disappearance of Alabama 18-year-old Natalee Holloway.

Van der Sloot, 35, is the prime suspect in the May 2005 disappearance of Holloway, who was last seen leaving a bar with him in Aruba during a trip for graduating seniors from Mountain Brook High School.

The court was prepared to provide a translator for him, but van der Sloot said, "It’s really not necessary" because he speaks good English.

Beth Holloway, Natalee's mother, sat in one of the first three rows and appeared to keep her eyes on van der Sloot almost the entire time.

Magistrate Judge Gray Borden told van der Sloot he would only accept a not guilty plea in the extortion and wire fraud case -- and that if the Dutch national decided to plead guilty, he could do so at a later date.

Although the charges involve allegations that van der Sloot tried to extort and defraud Holloway’s mother, it marked the first time that she had seen van der Sloot face-to-face, said George Seymore, of Patriot Strategies, who represents the Holloway family.

People like to talk possible serial killers or budding ones which I often don't tend towards but this creepoid is one imo and he got as far as two. That are known about. Who knows how many rapes and other things or date rapes, etc.

Aruban authorities still disgust me.

So can they make this sentence if and when found guilty concurrent??

Peru apparently doesn't do life in prison either. What is this, every country these days soft on the sentences??!!! Let out early. Life not life. Or they don't get life.

I feel so badly for Beth, no parent should have to go through what this family has. This boy should never be allowed to breathe feel air. He is a monster and does not deserve one drop of sympathy.
I feel for both parents. No doubt. I do not feel for the perp's one remaining parent nor his departed father who was questioned himself and hints were that he was involved, at least in the aftermath. I also think nothing of Aruba, a very small country, who let this teen gamble, drink and get away with a ton of sh*t. Tropical paradise my arse, watch out ones that are so naive to such and see just the surface be happy theme...

Brazil either. They can't find a prolific killer of hundreds of children. Of course, Did time and released. Canada life is 30 years. I still can't get over "Carla Homolka" Being released.

Absolutely ridiculous. This is not a murder case. Unfortunately. What is it they need time for? I think it is a pretty simple case quite honestly.

So all of the effort and expense to get him over to the US just to immediately delay it.

And WHY was it unopposed?

Joran van der Sloot has been granted an extension on pretrial deadlines, including whether or not he will plead guilty or move forward through the court process.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Gray Borden on Tuesday granted the request, the second extension successfully sought by van der Sloot.

<snip>
Borden extended the pretrial motions deadline to Nov. 13. A trial date has not yet been set.

He isn't free. Pretty sure. And when this is over he returns to prison in Portugal isn't it? Or wherever his other murder occurred.

Trust him to want to delay his time in the US. I'm surprised Beth isn't saying anything about their requests for delays and the fact they are being granted.

I suppose though even though they should have been ready for it, he probably was not appointed counsel until he got over here and I do suppose they need to prepare BUT this isn't a murder case for crying out loud. I doubt there is 200,000 exhibits or months or years of phone records, etc., GPS tracking, DNA, etc. It's an extortion case isn't it?

Is there an attorney or court in this nation that can get on things and do a job in a timely manner? I mean really.

One day we will likely hear of people with speeding tickets asking for a year to prepare to hope to fight it. And it will be granted. And of course they hope it will be forgotten while they continue on driving with nice insurance rates. Sarcasm intended. But again, this is NOT a murder case he is charged with. And two delays granted ALREADY.

Yes. I should have worded it better. He had been free for wayyyy too long. And still hasn't been formally charged after this long.

Threw her to the sharks. POS!!! Yeah. If she was dead, And had been bleeding. They will feed on pretty much anything. And other ocean life. But a shark. You're likely not going to have much evidence.

You know I love sarcasm. ❤️ :D :nodding:

There was talk of everything from the ocean to incinerators to her being buried on the island etc. in this case. Who was it that led Dave with false hope to some place with rocks, etc. Lots of extortion attempts if you ask me or false stories over the years and people giving false hope to the parents and so forth while playing them.

Corrupt little island. I don't think I've ever said anything like this in my life but I'm glad his disgusting dad is dead too. I hate that he murdered again but am glad he is imprisoned for one death. Where are the Kalpo(sp?) brothers? Come on, let's hear from them! And the dirty ones in office that were there at the time. Let's have some updates on all the dirty players... Where are they today? Leading shining lives I'm sure. Choke. Gag.

A budding serial killer.🤢
MOST definitely. If he had not been arrested, there WOULD have been others. And there already was #2 that we KNOW of.

Not a fan of his enabling mum either BUT his dad was creepy as well. So much talk of his involvement at points. OR helping to cover up. So many different stories given though, even by authorities.
