Joran van der Sloot is expected to face arraignment this morning in a Birmingham federal courtroom on charges he tried to extort the mother of missing Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.

Follow us here throughout the day for updates.

Van der Sloot was extradited on Thursday from Peru, where he is serving 28 years for the 2010 murder of college student Stephany Flores, to Alabama.

The 35-year-old was whisked from a Birmingham airport to the Hoover City Jail.

He is expected to be arraigned at 11 a.m. today at the federal courthouse in Birmingham.

Although van der Sloot has long been suspected in the disappearance and death of the Mountain Brook High School graduate visiting Aruba in 2005, he has never been charged in connection to her death.

However, federal authorities in Alabama contend that in 2010 van der Sloot exploited the fear of Holloway’s mother, Beth, that she would never find her daughter’s body or know what happened to her unless she paid him $250,000.

For an initial payment of $25,000, he would take the Holloway representative to the location of Natalee’s body. Once the body was recovered and confirmed to be Natalee, he said, he would then collect the remaining $225,000.

“I am hopeful some small semblance of justice will finally be realized may finally be realized, even though no act of justice will heal the pain we’ve endured,” a statement from Beth Holloway on Thursday read.

“For 18 years, I have lived with the unbearable pain of Natalee’s loss. Each day has been filled with unanswered questions and a longing for justice that has eluded us at every turn,” Holloway said.

“At the end of this, he has to be returned to Peru,” Van der Sloot’s attorney in Peru, Maximo Altez told The Associated Press. He will spend “at most two years in the United States.”

What I mean is I didn't hear of a cinder block, I simply heard or read in the one link I followed that he admitted to murdering her and dumping her in the ocean.. Does one of the links have more detail that includes a cinder block? Not asking you to go look for it or link it, just asking if that s the case? Or are you talking of some old story of his?
Nearly everything I have seen states it.

Also, I am not buying his claim that he went out knee keep and released her. In most cases, wouldn't the waves bring her back to shore unless there was a rip current right there? Nope. Not buying any part of his story about her death. The part that caused her death by refusing his advances, sure, but after that, nope. Not buying it.

As long as her mother is happy then I'm happy. Let her believe it. I'm sure it's close enough to the truth.

OMG. OMG. OMG.

I need to take a break.

Several things here to pick on but the details right now are just OMG.

Too many cases, with too much sh*t, and NO TIME I have to process and now hearing this.

I can't even do it right now other than to say I think we have half truths here.

I need to quit looking at any thread for now. My brain HURTS from all this sh*t.

But thank you for providing what I'd have likely not known or seen due to lack of time. I now know where the cinder block comments come from.

Pretty sure imo daddy and him took her out in a boat. Talk of that before. Or someone and him. Heck that is if this version is even true.

He likely did kill her on the beach though, simplest explanations often are the ones but I don't know after all the b.s. in this case how anyone can ever be sure.

I wouldn't even be sure Beth buys it all but I think the key for her likely is she got him to confess to her murder for once and for all. Let's hope anyhow we have heard the last from him.

Same. My guess is that again she'd just want him to confess to killing her and she got it. All the other details and all else, I'd think like anyone she'd have to say he has told so many stories BUT after dealing with that for all of these years what I'd want and I think most would want is JUST ADMIT you murdered her and know you may never be sure of all the rest/details but you finally have the key thing.

No one mentions Dave much here that I've seen although I haven't hit all links. That man went all out for his daughter as well over these years and was tormented and played by Joran and others as well.

They got the confession and I truly believe they showed Joran through all these years it/they would never let up until he 'fessed up. Finally had him in a corner on THEIR turf (the US) and he did. However it is a bit unclear if they knew of this proffer or deal, I would assume they did or perhaps Joran just knew nothing would go right for him if he ever wants a chance in hell of seeing daylight if he didn't confess.

Whatever happened, this has comments of both parents. Haven't heard Dave's name here since this much and I watched a LOT of what he tried to do to find answers too over the past many years.
