PAUL & MAGGIE MURDAUGH: South Carolina vs. Alex Murdaugh for Double Homicide of wife & son *GUILTY*

This case is being kept pretty quiet, no major details released to speak of (other than it does say there were two different guns used), but no info regarding who found them, who called 911, very little else.

Of interest, the grandfather died just a few days after these murders and it sounds as if he was ill from various articles so probably not unexpected. I think of the typical motives, did grandpa have a big estate? How big in the overall family of grandpa's on down? They sound like a pretty well known family and a powerful one in their state, more on that in the article.

We know they were alive right before 9pm and dead at 10. That's about as good as anybody would be able to tell. There is no exact time of death in any unattended death. Blood evidence - coagulation - would be the best evidence on this case, not temps.
I just dont get why they didn't get a more accurate TOD. There were enough of them all at the crime scene. I agree it was between 9 and 10 based on AM departure and return plus phone/car records. It is pretty important after all.

That is as accurate as ANYbody would get with an unattended death. There is no minute of death on an unattended death. It is always an approximation and usually within an hour.

The TOD isn't an issue in this case; rather it's who murdered them, imo. The guns used were Murdaugh family weapons. The South Carolina Attorney General's office may not be presenting the case clearly to everyone watching however I have to believe the jurors are paying close attention. Alex lied about his whereabouts (Paul's video) & attempted to force Shelley Smith & Blanca Simpson to change the truth to fit his narrative.

As someone who has watched this trial everyday and followed along closely, the circumstantial evidence is, imo, without a doubt proving who murdered Paul & Maggie.

But LE and the coroner were there before rigor mortis had set in. Why didn't the coroner or SLED document when rigor began? They were there after all.

Quoting my earlier post. This link has a partial list of defence witnesses.

Here's two extracts from the article.

Richard Harpootlian - as he is known to do - didn't hold back while chatting with the media during the fourth week of the Alex Murdaugh double murder trial.
“We don’t have to prove (expletive),” said the veteran defense attorney.
And he is right.
After four weeks of being on the defensive, attorneys for disbarred South Carolina attorney and accused family killer Richard “Alex” Murdaugh are set to take the offensive and make their arguments, present their evidence, and call their witnesses and experts - but this double murder case is not theirs to prove.

"There are also 33 witnesses on the defense-only list. Here are some of the most promising:

  • Buster Murdaugh (Alex’s surviving son)
  • John Marvin Murdaugh (Alex’s brother)
  • Lynn Murdaugh Goettee (Alex’s sister)
  • Liz Murdaugh (In-law)
  • Kennedy Branstetter (In-law)
  • Terry Branstetter (In-law)
  • Marian Branstetter (In-law)
  • Russell Laffitte (convicted Murdaugh accomplice)
  • Charles Laffitte II (Hampton banker)
  • Charles Laffitte III
  • Amy Bower, Esquire
  • Stephanie Stanley, SLED
  • Dr. Robin Cotton (head and neck surgeon)
  • Dr. Jonathan Eisenstat, pathologist
  • Tim Palmback, crime scene analyst
  • Mike Sutton, crime scene exhibits and animations
  • Kenneth Zerci, crime scene reconstruction
  • Jim Persinger, computer forensics
  • Chip Johnson, computer and phone forensics
  • William Tobin, GSR firearms and ballistics
  • Micah Sturgis, Cellbrite digital phone evidence
  • Dr. Amy Brodeur, BPA, CSI
  • Dr. Donna Maddox, psychologist"

Both testimonies from the first two witnesses today are interesting. Buster testifies his father said "They did him so bad" several times that night.
Mike Sutton testifies that from the trajectory of the shot, the shooter could not have been 6' 4" Mr. Murdaugh and would have been between 5' 2" and 5' 4".

On Court TV they just said the demonstration showing the shots could not have been heard at the house was powerful.

Does anyone know if it has been suggested by anyone whether the voice of Alex heard on the dog video could have been from him being on a video call rather than him being actually there? I have been looking at the timelines and just wondered about that as they seem to use their phones a lot to contact each other.

Not when he was talking to the dog. The video was not showing the dog he was talking about.

Plus, his phone and vehicle records indicate he WAS there at that time.
The records I saw did not show his phone. I will post the link.

This is the link.

This is from the link and I hope will show the interactive timeline. (Doesn't look like it copied so it can only be accessed from within the article)

STATE’S DETAILED TIMELINE

The last witness to testify for the state was SLED Special Agent Peter Rudolfski, who was tasked with putting all the data from the Murdaugh investigation into a timeline. Rudolfski included phone records and OnStar GPS records from Murdaugh’s Chevy Suburban.

Below is an interactive timeline of the data from the night of the double murders released by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division:

OnStar data showed Alex Murdaugh’s Suburban was only at Almeda, where he went to visit his mother, for about 20 minutes. This is what his mother’s health aide testified, but Murdaugh said he was there for at least twice as long. Murdaugh has used the visit to Almeda as his alibi.

His phone would also show if he was on a video call or not, too. He would have 100% be screaming about that if it had happened that way but instead he lied about being there and wanted the housekeeper to lie about how long he was at his mom's.
There are questions about possible deleted calls/items from his phone. If he was on a video call, he could have deleted it. Also the possibility he left the phone at the house. I believe there are questions that he will be asked if he testifies. His lawyer asked today if he could not be questioned on the financial issues or whether he could take the fifth on the financial questions. This was not something the judge would allow but he is going to address taking the fifth later on.

This is what the Independent said about this. (Link posted previously.)

"

Murdaugh testimony teased as court resumes

Judge Clifton Newman is at the bench.
Defence attorney Jim Griffin stands to raise an issue with defendant Alex Murdaugh’s potential testimony.
He asks for the court to restrict the prosecution from questioning Murdaugh about his financial crimes in cross-examination unless they are brought up in direct examination.
Prosecution attorney Creighton Waters argues that the witness may be cross-examined on any matter connected with the case including credibility — which he says goes right to the heart of the case. He reminds Judge Newman he has ruled the financial crimes as germane to the case.
When a defendant takes the stand they waive the right to self-incrimination."

Judge Newman sides with the prosecution and will not limit what they are allowed to question Murdaugh about on the witness stand.
He says that for the court to issue a blanket order limiting the scope of cross-examination is “unheard of” to him. "

That's a big piece to convict him IMO, anytime anyone asks someone to lie about a timeline it's very hinky.
