2020 assault charge dropped against Samuel Olson’s mother

Prosecutors dismissed an assault charge against the biological mother of Samuel Olson Friday, court documents confirmed.

Sarah Olson had been charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, accused of hitting Samuel’s father, Dalton Olson, with her car in May 2020 in Galveston County.

Those charges have been dropped.

Olson’s attorney on the case told KPRC2 the decision has stirred mixed feelings.

“It’s bittersweet because our argument the entire time has been, ‘hey this so-called complaining witness is committing a crime himself,’ a crime of kidnapping but we’re happy they have dropped this case sooner rather than later,” said Christopher Henderson, who represents Olson on the assault charge.
No history of violence there. FFS

Unfortunately, those don't weigh in on the legal charges that the State could pursue. Is he a crappy parent? Probably. However, criminal negligence ... that's a stretch when viewing the facts aligned with case law. :(
Personally, I have never seen a change.org petition do any good and honestly, sometimes I think they are useless. One time, in a very bad local area case, one was started, insisting the judge give no bond and that he sentence a woman to many years on end. This was before there ever was any trial or anything had even proceeded. I understood the passion behind it but doubted any judge was going to be "influenced" or should be I guess for that matter.

Now maybe if they used them to try to change or enact laws, etc. and obtained a ton of signatures, they might do some good, not sure.

In this case, I don't think it will have any weight but I guess it will show how many feel. If Dalton knew of any prior abuse by Balboa, that might make a difference but there is no indication of that. Another possible charge would be he apparently kidnapped the child but claims not to have known...

Like Jessica Lunsford's dad tried endlessly to toughen laws about not letting sex offenders out and some law makers shot it down. How can you do THAT?!!!! They're still doing it. And that girl was held captive for days and buried alive by a released sex offender that lived 100 yards away.

That was a horrible case and one a person can't forget. How do people who vote against such things get re-elected? Voters need to pay attention.

This is short and well worth a read. This is what one Arizona representative got passed. He hopes other states follow suit. He says getting this through is a starting point, it took some work to draft it and get all to agree on terms, close loopholes, etc. Note that a second offense is life in certain cases of trafficking, child pornography and molestation and it does not take a murder charge.

I saw him as a guest on a Youtube video and was so impressed. He also said he has no problem with other states using theirs as a starting point on drafting their own as it is burdensome and takes a lot of time and effort to draft such things, the laws, legalese, etc. and they have to be gone over with a fine tooth comb basically. (Paraphrasing)

That's great. He sounds like a wonderful man that people need to follow his example. But mandatory life on 2nd charge still. Shouldn't be given a second chance. I don't know how these law makers can vote no for tougher sentences. I watched a documentary that followed Mark Lunsford for his quest for tougher laws. So I saw them vote against doing it, Some in some places. Enough for the laws not to pass. What if it was your kids?. Have them live with you. Whether sex offender or child abuse.

I agree. He talked about that, he would have tougher. He had to get through what he could get the support for. He makes it clear it is a start and now is on the books where they had nothing before and he is far from done.

I wrote a reply, posted it, somehow it showed double posting so I deleted one and now they are both gone!

Also keep in mind this is not for murderers, we are lucky if murderers go away for life these days. This is life for a second offense with a molester, etc. I agree that is still a second child molested but they know IF they do they are looking at life. Again, as he said it is a start and they are the first I believe and only state to specifically address this and have such a law now.

B***H! WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL THE LANDLORD OR POLICE!
I would have called the landlord and said there was a rat in the wall! I never would have imagined a child being tortured.

I heard a girl screaming here at the top of her lungs a few yrs ago every few minutes. It sounded like it was inside and not playful. Not pleading. But I didn't like it. I couldn't tell where it was coming from. I called the Police.

They moved in the day after he allegedly died and she did not hear it until the day after that, he was allegedly already dead. It couldn't have been Sam--or the roommate is lying about the date of death, and if the roommate is lying about the date of death, then what is he covering, making sure he said it happened on a day he had an alibi? Why would she think it was a child anyhow? This is a terrible case that brings high emotions but I hardly think the new neighbor intentionally ignored something that she thought related to a murder, abuse or anything with a sound like scratching.

It's not like it was screaming or thuds like a person being thrown against the wall or an ongoing abusive assault or situation. It's too bad they just moved in because in the prior days, there is a good chance she may have heard screaming, crying, beating and called the cops.

At my old apartment I heard a child getting beaten across the hall. Dam right I called the Police. It was a boy. Sounded about 4. It was a man doing it. I could hear him screaming and the boy screaming for him to stop. That was over 20 yrs ago. I won't forget it.

That's horrible. I would never hesitate in such a case. I don't know what I would have done or thought with this scratching though, particularly if I just moved in, did not know the place, the neighbors, etc. You and I both know in an apartment building, at 3 or 4 in the morning, calling apartment management is not going to get someone running up over scratching. Assuming one can reach anyone unless it is an emergency maintenance number. Not sure what LE would react like to a report of scratching in/on the wall either.
