Search for missing Maine girl who was last seen 4 weeks ago continues, police say

State and federal authorities continue to search for a girl from northern Maine who went missing nearly a month ago.

Maine State Police officials said Tuesday that 14-year-old Stefanie Damron remains missing despite extensive investigative efforts.

Stefanie, who was 13 when she went missing on Sept. 23, was last seen walking out of her New Sweden home and into the woods located on West Road, according to authorities.

Members of the Maine State Police's Troop F and Major Crimes Unit North began investigating the circumstances surrounding Stefanie's disappearance. The MSP Computer Crimes Unit and the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team were also called upon to help ensure all resources were utilized in the search for Stefanie.

Investigators said they have conducted many interviews and have followed up on leads in Maine, nationally and in Canada. The Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police K-9 Unit have also searched large parcels of land near Stefanie's last known location in Aroostook County.

FBI now involved in case of missing New Sweden teen

State Police say since September 24th, they have gotten help from the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team.

We’re told investigators have conducted many interviews and have followed up on leads in Maine, Canada, and even nationally.

Officials say the Maine Warden Service has also searched land near Damron’s last known location, and the Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate the case in partnership with the FBI.

So she either got into an argument with her sister and walked off into the woods or was talking to someone online and met them at the end of the driveway.
Statement on the left is from today. Not sure about a date on the other one. (Not accusatory just trying to decipher what happened.)

My bet with her still being missing, is that she met somebody. By the dad's words, she was very sheltered, home schooler and isolated. Those kids seem to either be scared of everything or are so longing to break free of it.

Family of missing New Sweden teen gives details about day she disappeared

As authorities continue to investigate the disappearance of an Aroostook County teenager their family is now speaking out.

Maine State Police say 14-year-old Stefanie Damron was last seen on Sept. 23 walking out of her house on the West Road and into the woods in New Sweden.

The family has now put out statement regarding their daughter which outlines a little more about the day she was last seen.

In their statement they said: “Stefanie got into an argument with her sister while we were gone and walked off. We live a half mile back in the woods and our kids are very comfortable in their surroundings so there was nothing to raise flags the first few hours.”

State Police say since Sept. 24, they have gotten help from the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team.

We’re told investigators have conducted many interviews and have followed up on leads in Maine, Canada, and even nationally.

The family said over the last month, people online have made comments regarding the family’s parental decisions.

The family said: “Child Protection Services has been in our house verified and confirmed everything. We had nothing to do with this, we just want our baby home.”

Officials say the Maine Warden Service has also searched land near Damron’s last known location, and the Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate the case in partnership with the FBI.

Stefanie’s family also said they are planning a ground search in New Sweden.

This or somebody in their immediate family had something to do with it as in who said she went into the woods?

Ground Search Planned for Missing Teen

A ground search is being planned to look for Stefanie Damron, a missing teen from New Sweden who has been officially missing since September 24.

The ground search will take place this Saturday at 8am in New Sweden. The group will meet behind the Norstar variety. The organizers say they are hoping to find Stefanie or any trace of her during the search. According to the Maine Department of Public Safety, 14-year-old Damron was last seen walking out of her house and into the woods on West Road in New Sweden on September 23rd. Despite investigative efforts, Damron is still missing. Organizers of the ground search ask people to wear orange because it is hunting season.

Searchers determined to find missing New Sweden girl

A group of concerned citizens are combing through the woods of New Sweden for anything that might lead them to Stefanie Damron.

Damron was last seen entering the woods near her home on the West Road in New Sweden Sept. 23. She was 13 at the time but has since turned 14.

Her family reported her missing the following day. Maine State Police have been investigating since then, and are now following leads in the U.S. and Canada along with the FBI Child Abduction Rapid Response Team.

More than a month later, Damron’s whereabouts are still unknown.

“Detectives continue to follow up on any and all leads,” Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss said Monday.

Damron’s disappearance has inspired people within and around the small town of New Sweden to come together and search for her, much like the group that formed after Washburn man Erik Foote went missing earlier this year. Searchers say even though the Damron family has declined to become involved, their group wants to do what they can to bring the missing girl home safely.

“We’re not going to stop until we find her,” said Whittni Nichols of Caribou, who has helped to lead the citizen search parties.

The FBI is assisting state police in the search and encourages members of the public to report anything they see or hear, even if it seems insignificant, said Kristen Setera, spokesperson for the FBI’s Boston Division, which covers Maine.

Twenty-eight people walked for 10 ½ hours on Oct. 26 in the area near the home of Damron’s family. Most were local residents but a few traveled from southern Maine because they have Aroostook connections.

Nichols said that the groups encountered several leads that they turned over to state and federal investigators. They plan to conduct more searches in the weeks ahead after narrowing their focus area. She said that so far the Damron family has not been involved with the search group.

Nichols said that the FBI has advised her not to reveal the specifics of the leads due to the pending investigation.

Efforts to reach family members for comment have been unsuccessful, but several have spoken about Stefanie online.

While interviewed on Brooklyn Squad, a TikTok podcast featuring the stories of missing people, Stefanie’s great-aunt Jerri Harms of Illinois said that Stefanie moved with her parents, Christopher “Dale” and Lisa Marie Damron, grandfather and four siblings from Texas to New Sweden, a town whose population was 577 as of 2020, four years ago. Christopher Damron is Harms’ nephew.

Harms said Stefanie had tried to run away several times recently but family members always found her in the woods, Harms said.

While appearing on Brooklyn Squad, Christopher Damron said he and the family suspect that Stefanie used an old cell phone belonging to her grandfather to connect with people on social media.

“We had bought an old, simple phone. We didn’t even know it could connect to the internet. Turns out, this $20 flip phone was how she connected,” Christopher Damron said. “We didn’t know. Our kids are raised off the grid, no social media. We honestly believe someone could have picked her up.”

State and federal investigators declined to reveal specific details on the case but said that anyone with potential leads and tips should call the Maine State Police Houlton barracks at 1-800-824-2261 or the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).

It seems that every kid that was raised in a super restrictive environment is either scared of everything in the real world or does everything to get out of it.

Maine police share additional photos of New Sweden girl who's been missing for 2 months

Authorities are sharing more photographs of a Maine girl who has been missing for two months.

The Maine State Police shared two pictures of Stefanie Damron. Those photos appear to show Stefanie when she was younger.

Stefanie, who turned 14 after she went missing, was last seen walking out of her New Sweden home on Sept. 23 and into the woods located on West Road.

Despite extensive investigative efforts, Stefanie remains missing as of Thursday. Authorities said investigators have conducted many interviews and followed up on leads in Maine, nationally and in Canada.

The Maine Warden Service and Maine State Police K9 Unit have searched large parcels of land near Stefanie's last known location in Aroostook County.

Police said the MSP Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate the case in partnership with the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team.

I have really done well at ignoring new cases here overall and not looking at the few.

And I do not expect an answer but was thinking they reported a month later but apparently not the case, it was put up here about a month later? I came in as I thought it was one I maybe looked at being it was back in September.

Read the posts, have not read the links.

It's very reminiscent of another case that I don't think it on here but I followed at the other place. Who can blame anyone these days for home schooling or going off grid BUT quite often there is another reason... Not always of course. But this one sounds sus.

I wish I recalled the name of the one I am thinking of, I can give almost every detail but she found an ou from being molested and taken out of school and moved by conenecting with a man through gaming I think where daddy--neve rknew at first it was stepdad-- thought she didn't have such access... I don't know what happened here but I am highly suspicious.

Even grandpa talks of off grid. I am avoiding new cases but I looked and here I am...

hey I get it, I'd go for off grid and home schooling kids if I had that chance or could do it but for the right reasons.

I am not accusing anyone where becuase I don't know enough but it sends up the red flags. Big time.

Running away does not mean THEY are the problem.

Anyone know of the one I am talking of? She went with a man she went with who she'd talked through I think through gaming, from WI. He was saving her and I think far better than what she was dealing with with stepdad. No outs. Moved. Home schooled. Of course hey had sex yet he helped her by they dropped a letter from her I forget at a PD or somewhere... The man that helped her actually got I think ten years in the fed pen. The last I knew he was facing (stepdad--) a lot of time and his stupid wife, his mother was seeing him and siding with him but she was facing possible charges and it was changing but then it went quiet...

The girl took or brought her sheets with her I believe or some such.

Anyone?

Anyhow, going off grid and home schooling well, I can't blame anyone for wanting to do that these days, I sure would if rasing kids and could because the school system and the b.s. well... BUT her is enough times a bad enough reason for it... Seen it more than once in cases.

Anyhow, don't know if anyone here recalls the other case I am talking but just in reading the posts it really makes me think of such... Used grandpa's flip phone...

The Maine State Police say they will host a joint press conference on Monday with the Boston FBI Division about the disappearance of 14-year-old Stefanie Damron.

State Police, FBI to hold press conference with update on search for missing New Sweden girl

The Maine State Police and the Boston Division of the FBI will host a joint press conference Monday to share updates on the ongoing search for Stefanie Damron, a 14-year-old girl from New Sweden who has been missing since September.

The briefing is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at the Maine Department of Public Safety headquarters in Augusta.

FBI offers $15,000 reward for information about missing Maine girl

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the safe return of a missing Maine girl, Stefanie Damron, or the arrest and prosecution of anyone involved in her disappearance.

The reward was announced at a joint news conference with the Maine State Police at the Department of Public Safety on Monday.

“Any detail, no matter how small, could be helpful,” said Jodi Cohen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Boston Division. “Stefanie’s family desperately wants to know where she is, and we are fully committed to helping our law enforcement partners exhaust every investigative resource to find her and bring her home.”

Despite “extensive” investigation from multiple crime units and the FBI’s Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team, police have been unable to locate Stefanie for months.

Maine State Police are asking anyone with information about Stefanie’s location to call the regional communication center Houlton Barracks at 800-924-2261 or 207-532-5400. You may also contact the FBI at 800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324), your local FBI office or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.

“The Maine State Police remains steadfast in our investigation into Stefanie’s disappearance. Every lead, no matter how small is being thoroughly pursued to find her,” said Maine State Police Colonel William Ross. “We deeply appreciate the FBI’s support as we continue to urge anyone with information to come forward. Your tip could be the key to resolving this case and providing answers for Stefanie’s family.”

Despite extensive investigative efforts, including a neighborhood canvas and video search, along with an expansive grid search utilizing canines by the Maine Warden Service and Maine State Policce, Stefanie remains missing.

Investigators have also conducted dozens of interviews and followed up on potential leads in Maine, across the country, and in Canada.

The FBI’s CARD Team will continue to assist Maine State Police with on-the-ground investigative, technical, behavioral analysis, and analytical support.

I haven't followed closely at all but is it even certain she disappeared when it's said. It sounds like it's not.
They only have her sister's account of what happened. They had a fight and she walked off into the woods.... but there's also this she walked up the driveway theory.... where FBI CARD Team is activated and still involved tells me they can not rule out she was lured by someone online.
This is a way of life many do not understand. I have family up there who live basically off the grid. It's peaceful and I love it but it's not for everyone. People up there are very concerned she was catfished by a pedophile pretending online to be someone she could trust. Possibly convincing her that they were not much older like yes old enough to drive.... it's terrifying.

Another case that comes to mind is Abby Hernandez from NH. Poor girl was ambushed walking home from school by a psycho that abducted her then raped and tortured her for 9 months keeping her captive.....luckily power of prayer worked and she came home alive.

I hope Stefanie also comes home alive and the power of prayer prevails again.

Thank you for the fill in. A wanting to go off grid is truly a thing these days and I get it to a POINT but I think many do it for the wrong reasons or to hide what's really going on. To me, TRULY off grid means not being able to be found or tracked, absolutely no utilities, etc. Now going to somewhere quieter and more private I consider that different. I just sold the place in my whole life (and I'm not young, that probably had the most privacy and freedom I had ever enjoyed. Had acres, dead end, just a great piece of property. I enjoyed getting back to such and hearing the frogs, seeing wildlife, having quiet, etc.

This is the point when winding down I get more wordy as I'm doing tonight.

Looking back up at your post. Being able to be catfished and online is not what I think of as truly off grid. Parents may try to keep off but kids can find a way even so. Not sure I know about the Hernandez case.

So is it clear she disappeared this day because in most cases if there is not at least some independent sighting and even that I don't always count on, or camera footage found like surveillance, we see so many now they have been missing longer... Only reported when someone was about to check on the family or they had to explain where the child was, etc. I am not up on it, I apologize.

I guess another thing I'd say is maybe not all, but being raised off grid or even just rurally even if by good family, where you don't have a lot of interaction other than with your family or in that small area, you can be pretty darned naive at such an age.

Hey you are pretty active on the threads. I enjoy discussion and we all are busy and all but you've been on quite a few I see. I hope you stick around.

There's a case I'm trying to think of the name of, not sure if you followed, but think I mentioned it here or in another thread. She was alive but they lived "off grid" but for all the wrong reasons imo. I don't even know if it was prosecuted by any state but it was going through federal court last I knew. She IS a survivor but had little way to get out. And found a way, online, traded her fatherly molestor for a man who had sex with her when she was a minor but he got her out of there and tried to help her. That's a tough one with subjects to navigate. In the early stages when she was missing, her name was out there, but once found, being a minor, news stopped giving the name and I am drawing a blank. I recall almost all details though. It's a tough one as he really did save her, get her out, help her prove what she was going through, etc. But I guess of course that's statutory rape. He was adult and she was probably this young, maybe a bit older.

Not up to finding it but probably can one day. She knew enough I believe to take sheets, etc. MOM should have been charged too imo not sure if she ever was but dad was. It kind of disappeared from being able to follow or I came here around then and it wasn't on here, don't recall.

I am kind of wandering but it's a tough one, I don't think he was a child predator, the one who saved her. And he did get her out of awful stuff at her home and they had moved off grid, etc. But because they had sex, he was sentenced to ten years, the one that got her away from worse. IN the fed pen if I recall.

I love private property and peace. I also have another side that loves the convenience of a small city. I did have both. But some people do the off the grid for the wrong reasons. And we could have still been found, had utilities, etc. And had no minor children at home. Just love the peace of land and some quiet.

Anyhow, going on way long enough.

And don't know enough about this case I will admit.

The main one I know of is the case I am talking about, and for a long time and I was at another site then, it was never even reported he was her stepfather, all thought he was her father, but wasn't and had been molesting her since little into teens, etc. I think something happened and they moved. Off grid. And she had no outs. But she found the best one she could, not the best but it got her out. I'm not saying that's the case here because I don't know enough about this one.

And it for sure wasn't right to then probably have sex with her but she was a minor so the man who helped her went to the fed pen I believe for ten years. BUT HE DID HELP HER and HELP HER PROVE IT.

So again a bit of a sidetrack, just wondering the deal in this one... And should say again, I truly don't know enough about it.

I understand and like off grid, or private, I like both worlds actually. Probably why I tried to hang on so long to both. But I'm not doing anything shady. Not growing or producing illegal things, no minor children, etc. and to be clear I think of truly off grid as trying to hide, no utilities, no nothing.

But I may be way off base as to what is thought here as again don't know the case well and will always admit that when I don't. And I've went on long enough.

Vigil held for missing 14-year-old from Aroostook County

A vigil was held Saturday afternoon to raise awareness of a teen missing from New Sweden for nearly three months.

Family members, loved ones, and members of the community gathered at the New Sweden First Baptist Church to share Damron's story and to hold a moment of silence.

People were also asked to write letters and wear purple, Damron's favorite color. The letters are part of a community-organized effort to get messages into the public in hopes of Damron seeing them. There is a social media page dedicated to sharing those letters.

Officials are asking members of the public to play an active role in helping find Stefanie by reviewing her updated missing person poster and sharing it on social media.

Reward offered for missing New Sweden teen has resulted in ‘more than a dozen’ new tips

Stefanie Damron, a missing teen from New Sweden, has now been missing for 104 days.

Damron went missing at the end of September, and was last seen walking into the woods near her home in New Sweden.

In December, the FBI announced a $15,000 reward for information leading to Damron’s safe return, or information that leads to the arrest and prosecution of anyone involved in her disappearance.

Monday, the Maine Department of Public Safety confirmed that more than a dozen tips have come in since the reward was announced. The department also stated that detectives are still following up on leads in this case.

WAGM requested an interview regarding the impact of the reward, but this request was denied.

“We have conducted more interviews, traffic roadblocks to provide the public with information and continue to follow up on the few leads that are coming in,” says Lt. Darrin Crane, the commanding officer of the northern division of the Major Crimes Unit. “We continue to work with the FBI and all local, county and other state agencies. The State Police is dedicated to finding Stephanie or determining what happened to her. We have thousands of investigative hours into trying to do just that and will continue on with the investigation.”

Lt. Crane added that to their knowledge, Damron does not have current access to electronic devices and limited access to social media. The Maine Warden Service has canvassed the woods for Damron but has had no credible information of sightings of the 14-year-old girl.
