AMBER Alert issued for missing 5-year-old out of Hawkins Co.​

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide AMBER Alert for a missing 5-year-old girl from Rogersville in Hawkins County Wednesday morning.

Officials with the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to WVLT News that Summer Moon-Utah Wells went missing Tuesday night. Sheriff’s Office officials are asking for the public’s help locating the child.

Summer Wells has blonde hair and was last seen wearing grey shorts and a pink shirt on Ben Hill road, officials said. She has been missing since 7 p.m. Tuesday.

TBI officials said Summer Wells may now have shorter hair than that pictured in earlier alerts.

Summer Wells' brothers removed from home by DCS, dad says 'It's not safe at my house'​

Summer Wells’ three brothers have been removed from their home in the rural Beech Creek community by the Department of Children’s Services, although the exact reason hasn’t been released.


On Monday, the Times News spoke to Summer’s father, Donald Wells, who wouldn’t discuss specifics about why the boys were removed from their home by the Department of Children’s services except to say it’s not safe there. Department of Children’s Services removals aren’t a public record.

“Right now it’s not safe at my house,” Wells said. “There’s too much going on and people are crazier than hell, and right now it’s just not safe at my house. There’s too much going on. Too many crazy people coming around trying to start stuff.”

He said he’s had a problem with amateur crime solvers and psychics trespassing at his home — and walking up to his house in the middle of the night.

Wells: “People blow this out of proportion. They think my wife — it’s just crazy. It’s just absolutely insane, and it’s not safe for my kids.”

KTN: Who’s coming around your house?

Wells: “All sorts of people. Juanita (Szahranksi) for one. They think she’s a psychic and she has some sort of special gift, and we don’t need her crazy (expletive) stopping at our house. She claims to be a Christian, and then she claims to be a psychic. How does that work? If you’re a Christian, God says you don’t go there, period. It’s against God.”

KTN: Is anybody else coming to your home?

Wells: “We’ve had a few people come in the middle of the night. We had one — I don’t think he’ll be coming back to our house anymore though.”

When asked if his three sons were in state custody or staying with friends or relatives, Wells replied, “I can’t answer any questions, buddy. I’m not going to go there.”

Wells: “All this speculation is getting worse, and worse and worse. People are threatening us, and it’s not safe at my house. We’re hoping if something happens things will start to get safer, but the way things are going it’s just getting worse and worse.”

i've seen that very thing happen here. Some of these cases sure bring the crazies out and many of them have no respect for the families, their neighbors or anything, really.

I’ve seen it happen from a far and it seems to usually happen in missing children cases where there’s a lot of press. Even in quieter cases, families have told me that psychics offer help and most always at a price. But what I haven’t heard though is DCS taking children from the home because of it.

i didn't necessarily take it as the reason why they took them in the first place, but his now reasoning of why they were probably better off where they were right now because of it

Candus Bly, Summer’s mother, described the tiny, five-year-old girl on the missing posters and Amber Alert billboards.

“She went from PAW Patrol to My Little Pony,” Candus said. “Then Elsa in Frozen. And then went to those weird Dracula Barbie Dolls with the weird-colored hair and stuff. I think it’s Monster High dolls.”

The idea to color her hair didn’t come from the dolls, however.

“I dyed my hair and she wanted to have her hair dyed,” Candus said. “I mean, what girl doesn’t want to be like her mama?”

Candus said her daughter’s interests are varied.

“She just likes all kinds of stuff. She could actually sing the whole Frozen song. She likes Godzilla. Her daddy got her to liking that one,” Candus said.

Although Summer appears extremely energetic in the numerous videos of her on social media, Candus said Summer doesn’t rise with the sun.

“She usually likes to sleep in. I was trying to figure out how I was going to get her up to go to school. (The youngest son) does too. He’ll sleep until noon if you let him. I mean they all pretty much will. I think (the second-oldest son) is the only one who will get up early,” Candus said.

At home, Summer is often seen in photos cuddling with the family’s pets, both cats and dogs.

“She calls that one ‘Yucky,’” Candus said, pointing out one of the friendly dogs on the property. “It was my oldest son’s dog and he called it ‘Lucky.’ But she called it ‘Yucky.’ I don’t know why. She’s a very comical kid.”



Summer’s angelic face and infectious smile, along with her tragic plight, have made her the subject of countless prayers and concerns of friends and complete strangers, who reach out to try and help in some way. A woman who is friends with Grandmother Candy recently tried to raise funds for the family with a GoFundMe account.

“I told her I don’t care about no damn money,” Candus said. “I don’t want anybody’s money. I just want my daughter back. That’s what I keep trying to tell all these people. I don’t need your money, your food and all that. We have all that we need. I just want my daughter back home. That’s all I want.

“People just want to keep giving. I don’t want your money. Keep it. I understand wanting to help and stuff, but I just want my daughter home. I don’t care about the money,” Candus said.

Misinformation shared on social media causes problems in case of missing 5-year-old, TBI says​

The investigation into the circumstances leading to the disappearance of 5-year-old Summer Wells remains active and ongoing, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Wednesday.

Agents and Hawkins County detectives continue to search for a 1998-2000 maroon or red Toyota Tacoma, with a full bed ladder rack and white buckets in the truck bed.

According to the TBI, this stems from information investigators received that a truck matching that description was seen in the area of Beech Creek Road and Ben Hill Road in the late afternoon to early evening on either Monday, June 14 or Tuesday, June 15.

The TBI said it had been brought to their attention that a photo of what the truck may look like has been circulating on social media, along with claims that the vehicle has been located. This is not accurate, TBI said. Additionally, the photo was not released by law enforcement.

“We continue to urge the public only to share information from official sources,” the TBI said.

The TBI warned of people asking for donations from the public under the pretense that they are assisting law enforcement in the search for Summer. TBI Agents and Hawkins County detectives have not requested investigative assistance from any private citizen.

Should the TBI develop new information that could help locate summer, it will notify the public immediately.

“However, please understand that we cannot share specifics about the investigation itself, as it is ongoing.” the bureau said.
