A Chaffee County woman is missing after a neighbor said she went out for a bike ride Sunday and never returned, sparking a search involving more than 100 emergency personnel.

The Chaffee County Communications Center received a report on Sunday at 5:46 p.m. regarding a missing woman in the area of County Road 225 and West Highway 50.


Anybody who has information on Morphew’s whereabouts is asked to call the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office at 719-539-2596 or Chaffee County Crime Stoppers at 719-539-2599.

A Colorado woman went for a bike ride on Mother’s Day, and hasn’t been seen since, authorities said.

Suzanne Morphew, a 49-year-old married mother of two, was reported missing Sunday by a neighbor after she did not return from a bike ride near County Road 225 and West Highway 50 in Chaffee County, sheriff officials announced Monday.

A search for Morphew, of Maysville, involving more than 100 law enforcement officials — including some with tracking dogs — “began immediately,” but no sign of the woman was found.

She remained missing as of early Wednesday, Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze told The Post.

Spezze declined to comment on whether Morphew’s husband is cooperating with authorities in the search for the woman or whether investigators believe foul play was involved.

The husband of a missing woman is now offering $100,000 as a reward for information about her disappearance, a family member told CBS4. Suzanne Morphew was reported missing on May 10.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the area near County Road 225 and West Highway 50 in Maysville, west of Poncha Springs, that evening. They spoke with a neighbor who said Morphew, 49, reportedly went on a bike ride, but never came home.

On Wednesday, Sheriff John Spezze told CBS4 while it’s an open investigation, he would not rule out a criminal investigation. He adds the probability of an animal attack is not very high.

The FBI and Colorado Bureau of Investigations are now involved.

A neighbor first reported Morphew missing. Family says her husband was out of town on a trip to Denver at the time.

Spezze would not confirm whether they had found her bike.

There are obvious questions here to ask that I doubt right now there are answers for. One would be why the neighbor noticed and was concerned. He/she must have had a reason to know or notice. Another would be lack of confirmation that the husband is cooperating or not.

There was a quick response or so it appears and a search so just in guessing, there must have been some real reason for some major concern.

Just my thoughts on reading this.

They won't say whether they found her bike. Would make a lot of sense if it's something to still keep an eye out for, or to report sightings of a woman on a bike from that day.

CBI creates tipline for missing Chaffee County woman

In conjunction with the search the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the disappearance of Morphew. Investigators from the 11th Judicial District, Colorado Bureau of Investigations, the Salida Police Department, the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have joined the effort.

A dedicated tip line has been established by the Colorado Bureau of Investigations. That tip line number is 719-312-7530. Anyone with information into the disappearance of Suzanne Morphew is asked to call the tip line.

Yes it is so strange. Generally LE says when a person is cooperating so it would tend to make me think he is not, but then he offers a reward as you say, and a big one?

All I can figure with the neighbor is she either told the neighbor for safety reasons she was leaving and would be back in an approximate time (did she have something to be worried about?) or perhaps had plans with the neighbor? I wonder if she had any children(?) and if they were at the house and perhaps alerted the neighbor or checked for her there?

A lot of info that just isn't here.

By the way, the FB link is broken so it must have been taken down. Does anyone think that's odd? Usually a suspect is the one that wants their page down because people go at them.

Not confirming on the bike would lead me to believe they did find it?

There is a lot of involvement, even the GBI and feds are involved. There are two county departments involved, I wonder if that means anything? Chaffee and Fremont and then the Salida PD, I find that somewhat unusual jurisdiction-wise. I could see it with searching perhaps. Seems like an intense and likely criminal investigation?

I wondered this myself. After reading that the husband was out of town, I speculated that maybe Suzanne knew her neighbor well and perhaps the neighbor kept an eye out for her while her husband was away.
According to the Daily Mail, she was a "mom-of-two", maybe her children went to the neighbor for help when their mother didn't return home. However, I'm unsure how old the children are, or if they reside with their mother.

Another thought...
If the neighbors are anything like us southerners, who do alot of front-porch-sittin, it is easy to believe that the neighbor might have simply noticed her leaving on her bike and not returning before dark. Especially, if Suzanne was a creature of habit.
As for the husband, I see that he is offering a reward... that seems eager for information/for her return. On the flip side, we know things aren't always as they seem.

I was reading some of the comments earlier at the sheriff's dept. page and someone said, of course I can't verify it as truth, that one of the children (maybe both, unsure) was camping and called the neighbor I believe perhaps when she couldn't reach her mother. It still seems a bit unusual. The neighbor, even so, though, must have known she had left on her bike or he/she noted it gone?

We know how these things usually go but I will say on the site that people were saying the couple were both very warm, nice people. Churchgoers and more.

They originally lived in another state, she was a teacher. I wonder how long they had been in Colorado.

This is awesome, if unusual, all while LE won't confirm if the husband is cooperating. That to me is strange. In most cases even if one is a possible POI, they do say if they are interviewing and cooperating... I don't want to say more than that as from what I have read, they are a couple of very nice people. The lack of confirmation by LE re the husband's cooperation just is odd.

Missing Colorado mother Suzanne Morphew’s bicycle has been found, family says

A family member of a missing Colorado woman told a reporter on Thursday that her bike had been found, but police have not yet released any details about what has been recovered in the search for Suzanne Morphew.

On Thursday, Morphew’s nephew Trevor Noel told a Fox 21 News reporter that Morphew’s bicycle was recovered on Sunday. Investigators have not confirmed this, and it remains unclear if the bike was recovered by a member of the official search party, or by a volunteer.
