ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Bumpy night here in STL however all is well. Thunder was obnoxious, especially while trying to sleep on the third floor. The wind literally howled which was eery. I was waiting to hear that freight train but didn't. Feeling blessed.

45 minutes South of me

Thought of you guys when hearing of this last night. Glad you are safe.

Third floor? Not on the first floor or basement in weather like that?

Bedrooms are on the 3rd floor. I'm not sleeping on a concrete basement floor. ;)

nope, just really windy and rain. I was at my mom's room and she has a wonderful view to the west, so we were watching the storm roll in. It gained strength as it moved east, so just a normal kind of storm here with a few limbs down here and there, but nothing serious.
Exactly! It picked up speed & intensity as it moved across the state & hit, hard. The temperature went up before it rolled in. It was in the low 60's then upper 70's by 9pm. This morning was back in the 50's which is perfect, but it's still windy.

Gotcha lol.

On April 4, 1991, around 10 a.m., police in Nags Head responded to the 8600 block of East Tides Drive in south Nags Head.

Someone had found human remains in a trash can rack.

At the scene, the remains were so badly decomposed that they could not tell the baby's gender. The baby was later determined to be a boy, and was called "Baby Doe" since they had no information about who he could be.

For years, investigators assessed evidence over and over again and had no leads. In 2019, they sent one of his ribs to a private lab in Texas for analysis.

The lab was able to extract DNA from the rib and conduct a genealogical profile. It indicated ties to a family in North Carolina, and further investigation from this break in the case led to the arrest of Scott Gordon Poole, 54, and his wife Robin Lynn Byrum, 51. They're both from Taylorsville, North Carolina.

Wow. They got away with it for a long time... Hopefully justice will result. I wonder if they were able to determine how the baby died at the time.
