ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Well here is the father of the century--NOT!

So. 9 years ago the children were 8, 3, and 0. They are now 15, 12, and 9. And enduring the trauma again via the press. You know the oldest child remembers all this. I feel so bad for kids that endure trauma over and over again.

I think you responded to the wrong one, but the time stamp of the rental is what they needed and if he didn't have the receipt itself would be the issue. His cc statement is why they probably knew to keep digging for it.
The entire thing struck me a bit odd. The thing about data retrieval issues and the idea someone was convicted because Hertz could not come up with a record. A car rental place no less.

Good point. I doubt anything like this ever entirely goes away for children (and even adults). It is so unfair the choices of someone else's evil actions victimizes many more people than just the immediate victim.

That was a bit awkward.

Wow. I sure hope she did not want him there but it would not be unusual for someone to go back to an abuser. Pretty sharp of the prosecutor to pick up on it.
