ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

Well breaking news just interrupted my show, at least locally. The mayor of Mpls is calling for charges against the arresting officer in the death of George Floyd.

He is calling on the Hennepin County attorney to arrest the officer. Not sure if that means it will happen or he just is giving his opinion and "calling" for it.

As there should be

Yes. This one is really heated right now too and hotter by the moment. I saw just the short clip and I gather it goes on for an excruciating five minutes at least. With a technique not even approved, while he was obviously in distress and people around were asking them to let up some. Unless I missed it, these officers have not even been named, much less the one who was the one who did it. Nice they have that protection... I can't get over how dumb some officers are (not all, there are many good ones), in this day and age? People with cell phones and video? How does someone like that get on a force or stay on the force? Smh.

I can't believe they not one of the other multiple officers on site didn't step in either. None of them.

I know right? The mayor also mentioned four officers were a pretty big response for what the call was about, overly responded to it sounded like. Not saying that is fact, it is a big city but these were his words. In the short clip I saw, you could hear people around asking them to ease up, etc. and I don't suppose those people dared interfere either with four officers.

Now what is normally our Covid update is the governor with this matter again. Daily Blast Live also had it so I will bet it is nationwide news easily.

This is from Thursday's nine at nine on ID. Do we have a thread for it?

Done!

Might not be a favorite source, but I was looking here to check on something else and don't think I had seen this case, reported yesterday. :(

A woman claimed her 9-year-old son was abducted. Now she's charged with his murder

"Patricia Ripley, 45, initially told Miami-Dade Police that two men side-swiped her car while she was driving with her son, Alejandro Ripley, around 9 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

She said the men demanded drugs and abducted her son, who has autism and is nonverbal, authorities said.

Contradicting witness statements and video footage later surfaced, and she admitted to her son's death.

"She stated he's going to be in a better place," the Miami-Dade County Police said in the affidavit.

Ripley was arrested and charged with with first-degree murder and first-degree premeditated attempted murder, according to the affidavit."
