They are really putting a lot of info out about the suspect and the shooting. They are looking for a bag that he appeared to not have any longer when he left the park. This was a bit unusual though and i had already noticed in the photo the shooter used a silencer. The Mayor, a former police captain said he had never seen a silencer before. Weird thing to say? We all know what a silencer looks like and i recognised it immediately when i saw it in the pic.

What we're covering​

• The suspected gunman who fatally shot UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson used a fake New Jersey driver’s license to check into a Upper West Side hostel, according to a law enforcement official.

• The NYPD released new images of an unmasked “person of interest wanted for questioning” over the killing. Detectives believe the shooter operated in a way that suggested he was an experienced marksman.

• The words “delay” and “depose” were found on a live round and shell casing, according to law enforcement sources. Authorities also found a phone and bottle of water that may have been dropped by the gunman. Police were able to get one fingerprint off of the water bottle but it’s smudged, an official told CNN.

• The shooter’s motive is unclear. But a source told CNN that UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, America’s largest insurance company, was aware of threats against its executives.

Multiple law enforcement officials tell CNN that the ID was used to check in on November 30.

NYPD searched Central Park for shooter’s missing gray backpack, but have not yet found it, official says​

The New York Police Department launched a massive search of Central Park on Wednesday for the missing gray backpack worn by the shooter who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a senior law enforcement official tells CNN.

Police deployed mobile field forces to conduct a grid search, looking through garbage cans, dumpsters and bushes in search of the missing backpack.

But despite the extensive search, investigators have not located the backpack and do not know what was inside the backpack and if it contained the weapon.

The search was initiated after detectives reviewed video from a security camera of the man they believe is the suspect leaving the park through the West 77th Street exit, no longer wearing the backpack seen on the shooter before the shooting when he ordered a bottle of water at Starbucks, during the shooting, and afterwards as he rode into the park on an electric bike, the official said.

CNN has obtained footage of what appears to be the suspect nearby on West 85th street at around 7 a.m. ET on Wednesday.

Investigators also reviewed footage from a hostel on the Upper West Side, where they believe the shooter may have been staying, in which the suspected gunman is wearing the same hooded jacket as seen in the other videos but is wearing a different backpack with a black strap over his shoulder.

Police are using video surveillance to piece together the alleged gunman’s movements before, during and after the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday.

Some key moments:

  • 6:15 a.m. ET: A surveillance camera image obtained by the Washington Post appears to show the suspect in the United Healthcare CEO’s murder leaving the 57th Street F train station before the shooting. The Washington Post timestamps the image at 6:15 a.m. Investigators believe that the suspect may have taken a subway from the Upper West Side to midtown.
  • 6:17 a.m. ET: Video at a nearby Starbucks shows the assailant buying a bottle of water and two energy bars roughly 30 minutes before the shooting, according to police.
  • 6:30 a.m. ET: Around 6:30 a.m., surveillance video captured what appears to be the gunman on the phone.
  • 6:44 a.m. ET: Thompson walked toward the Hilton Midtown after leaving his hotel across the street, police said. The masked gunman was “lying in wait” outside the Hilton as Thompson made his way to the hotel to attend his company’s annual investor conference, according to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The gunman came up behind Thompson and shot him in the back, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said. He then walked toward Thompson and continued to shoot, stopping to clear a gun jam before firing again, Kenny said.

I do think this was an unusual hi profile assassin murder. The Hilton Hotel an unusual high profile venue with the gunman knowing his target was going to appear. Almost looks like he wants to be caught as he is on camera at so many places. Also, to me it is unusual they are putting out so much of the public footage. They certainly seem to really want to solve this quickly and catch him before he leaves the city IMO.

MINNESOTA? I guess I need to go read the links, haven't done so yet, just reading the posts yet. I saw a headline about this today but never followed up on it. Don't understand a comment or two either unless something more is already know or assumed.

So was he FROM MN or something but in NYC?

I'll have to read if I get a chance. Need to try to get laundry in before day is gone.

Shell casings from the brazen slaying of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan had the words "deny," "defend" and "depose" written on them, NBC News reported Thursday, citing law enforcement sources.

Those chilling words echo the title of a 2010 book, "Delay Deny Defend," whose subtitle is "Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It."

UnitedHealthcare, a subdivision of UnitedHealth Group, is the largest private health insurance payer in the United States and has been the subject of heated controversy over its relatively high rate of denial of health-care claims.
 
I saw the thing about words on the casings half a day ago on John Kelly. It is deny or delay? I keep reading delay here and and thought it was deny, defend, depose.

also what's the thing about some female employee "flirting" with him. seems a bit over the top sensational on that one. trying to imagine flirting with a man hiding inside a jacket.

who goes to starbucks for a drink and energy bars before a murder? how weird.

never did get time to read all posts or the links here and just back now but did watch John Kelly who covered what was known at the time half a day or so ago.

even though not sure what sources to trust here, it seems they know a lot already even if some of the posts seem a bit sensational.

it was a good show and was going to come back and link but never got here.

of course he doesn't know but had some pretty good thoughts. logical ones I guess one would say and we know the experience there.

from atlanta or so one post says... under an assumed name and ID which they already know of so they're on it. if true.

we've got two bit cities then , atlanta and manhattan, nyc, then we have an ebike and a starbucks person, travel, preparing, etc.,gettign his energy bars and "coffeee", false name and so on.

that's so alien to any kind of life i know of. sometimes i'm really glad, even though i hate winter, that i'm just some midwest hick where people are still pretty normal and trying to live and afford life.

IF all of these posts are true, I'm sure getting a picture of a type. Might be midwest and the person is abnormal to me, but not stupid or unexposed to such things, and logic is telling some things pretty quickly here. Imo.

It was certainly planned for instance. The person had some knowledge no doubt.

Kelly said a few things but one is that an actual TRAINED experienced assassin would have shot him in the head. However, he wasn't ruling out anything but did go to more likelihoods than not. Definitely had some knowledge.

The victim was not staying at the Hilton, must have known that... Etc.

Not my typical kind of case interest but saw it before I saw it here today.

They need to get the words right though. Deny or delay? Defend and depose. It does not match a title unless the word is the same one. Not that it couldn't be done to hint or throw off by one word.

And perhaps I heard it wrong. It was far earlier. Not heard it wrong but maybe he had it wrong.

The words he wrote on the casings were reportedly Deny Defend Depose and they are comparing it to the title of a book called Delay Deny Defend.

The book being about insurance company delay tactics presumably.

Sounds like a grudge killing to me. Shooting him in the back could be significant too. Another 'D' for Death.

What i am finding unusual is the extremely detailed reporting of the whole crime and how he did not run in to a cop anywhere. Was it LE shift change time or something? First murder where the getaway vehicle was an ebike?

And he arrived from Atlanta by Greyhound bus (20 hour journey) on 24th Nov so he has been in NYC for 10 days? He is an eco assassin.

It does seem like grudge. Kelly also talked about a major hack that the news hardly covered and how it affected many people's coverage and lives. That's our worthless news for you.

I get that about the book and it does make sense being what it was about, and perhaps one word was purposely different to throw off or he had it wrong, hard to say. But yes, the word he wrote was deny.

The thing about a cop, or running into one, well that's not the same these days either imo but not sure about Manhattan so not going to hazard a guess. I will say it was early morning and he used a silencer, I'm sure more will come on that but I'd definitely be careful of some of the sensational news.

It was four shots wasn't it? That's no top level trained assassin, however, he knew enough, not his first time using a gun. Definitely planned out, and definitely had knowledge he'd be there, etc. Imo and also from what I've heard. That just makes sense.

Yeah, there is sure a lot of detail and what not coming out fairly quickly versus some cases. Not sure about the ebike. Something rings a bell with a bike, also in NYC, but don't know that what I'm thinking of was an Ebike, but was certainly a bike. A gopher, messenger, package delivery I think, some case, can't recall.

So did he bring the Ebike from Atlanta or was shopping or such was provided after getting there? I don't think it's going to be long before an arrest. Or until they know who if they don't already. Why is it I think the guy may end up dead whether it be suicide or by cop. Keeps crossing my mind. If he does, keep in mind I said it...

I hadn't caught he had been there ten days. That's interesting...

All of this also took at least some amount of money. I myself can't imagine getting around NYC if never there or familiar, travelingg that far by Greyhound, plannning, parking the bike, all of it, going to Starbucks, so on. It's definitely someone with a serious want to kill him and who planned and made it a mission. Imo.

It may have been his last money, don't get me wrong, or scraped up, etc.if for instance, medical bills affected him, them, someone, etc. Younger, probably an internet history... That's just my opinion, I honestly don't even know what a fricking E bike is as a case in point. There was a silencer, etc. Some help or some research... These are my opinions again.

Back to Kelly though, he goes on about the number of cameras in such an area. Guesses the guy knew this. Also that the appearance is NOT his normal one, changed things. Some major things so not so easily recognizable. Has a few possibilities but leans towards grudge too, talks of how huge United is and how many companies affected, and the hack possibly as well. Disgruntled employee even... Fired or lost job. He knew of one company that had to close its doors, knew of personally after the hack.

I'm trying to recall but I think like a million plus customer's info was stolen...

A big deal, barely reported. Just for one thing.

Also talked of managed care, and the denial by ins. cos., a few various possibilities.

Mostly though I'm just going by what we see and know. Only my opinion so far.

I will never MOO, never did at JT either lol. God I could not stand that from day one. So stupid. To me anyhow.

It was planned, he had knowledge, he traveled a long ways. Had the E bike or got one. Bought energy bars, that is so alien to me it isn't even funny. Starbucks, Sounds very much like a certain type. Knew the area but then could have canvassed it for days if the ten days is true. Needed those energy bars to get out of there and ride with fitness on the ebike.

It's not funny but well it is pretty strange. Again it would be a pretty alien type of person to me. Might even be the type that lives in ma and pa's basement.... Again that's me, not Kelly.

Perhaps his inheritance is gone due to parents' health issues and failure by United.

Of course it could be something bigger and he was hired. I haven't looked at SM but don't doubt conspiracy nuts are having at it.

Kelly also talked about their stock and that it has been doing very well despite the hack which wasn't covered much. It was a pretty interesting watch although of course he doesn't know.

He does not think it was some love triangle, etc.

And he could be right, or wrong. Like his shows though. Pretty smart and logical man and of course an experienced profiler. With connections.

That's pretty much all I've got to offer. Still haven't read links here but his show covered the basics known at that moment. probably better than news.

And yes, it was deny, not delay. The fact though that the book fits, seems significant and the screw up in words might be intentional or he just got it wrong.

The book will probably now sell oodles of copies.
