Letcher County, KY Sheriff arrested in shooting death of District Judge

Sheriff Mickey Stines was arrested after surrendering himself to police. The shooting occurred in the judge’s chambers about 3 p.m. this afternoon (September 19).
Stines allegedly walked into the judge’s outer office, told court employees and others gathered there that he needed to speak with District Judge Kevin D. Mullins alone. The two then went into the inner office, closed the door and those outside heard shots. Stines walked out with his hands up and surrendered to police.

Court employees were on the sidewalk outside the courthouse in shock following the shooting. Stines was handcuffed in the foyer of the courthouse. Officials expected the investigation to continue for several more hours.

So the cat is choosing your cases now. LMAO.

Well he chose a good one.

I can't answer many of your questions as it is unknown what the judge or the sheriff knew about the goings on re ankle monitors. I think there is an outer and an inner office in the judge's chambers and the shooting was caught on the camera in the inner judge's chamber, where his office was. We don't know if the outer chamber had cameras. I would imagine not and that maybe that is where the "favours" re the deputy took place IMO. That has already gone to court and I believe the Sheriff was due to give, or already gave, evidence in that case which is ongoing, i believe.

Did you also catch this fact? (from one of the links up thread.)

"Lead county prosecutor Matt Butler had to recuse himself from this case, due to the fact that his wife and Mullins’ wife are sisters."
Well I believe it was my cat lol. It is not the typical kind of case from the title I'd gravitate towards normally. In fact, I'm doing pretty darned well at taking on and looking at no new ones here.

I catch the sisters thing and where I called it a Peyton Place, that was one of many reasons.

Even though long, it was hard to encapsulate all in my post.

I really don't need this nor looked for it. Lol.

BUT it is clearly something that should be far more out there and covered.

i was actually surprised to see you in it as I know you don't do all cases and wondered why I knew nothing of it at all.

So what are your thoughts as to what the deal really is?

I don't have an issue with thinking all three were dirty, corrupt and for selves. BUT I do have to wonder if there was one maybe that was better than the other two and was going to tell and so had to go... But that's not the normal thing, normal thing would be they all were up to no good and that what we are led to believe, the sheriff fond out his buddy covering with them all as doing his own daughter...

What is TRUE though??

I don't want to generalize about the south but look at some cases in the last years... And I can say my own county well... The sh*t does go on to this day...

So now that my cat or something got me looking at it lol where are you at with it and your thoughts on it?

Again I have no read links but did read every post and it doesn't seem anyone is sure and this is being hidden, tamped down, etc. at least for the moment.

Totally superficial but I thought in the pick of judge and his wife, she looked very unhappy.

I am of the opinion there must be something in it. They took the phone records of a court employee and i wondered who that could be? Haven't worked that one out yet. But it is small town stuff and everyone is either related to or married to someone involved by the sound of it.

A little more info in this article.

"A woman employed by the Letcher County Sheriff’s Office voluntarily gave her phone to investigators to be examined, Stamper testified. She was reportedly one of the sheriff’s employees, was present at the Sept. 19 lunch, and received text messages from Stines regarding things that led to the shooting. The phone was also sent for forensic examination.
Stines’ attorney argued that the entirety of the video should be shown, but the Commonwealth rebutted that it was not necessary since the hearing was only to establish probable cause.
He also argued that the charges against Stines should be amended down to manslaughter due to Stamper’s testimony that claimed there was no evidence to show the shooting was planned and was the result of “extreme emotional disturbance.” The Commonwealth objected to this motion, which was ultimately sustained because Mullins was not believed to be armed at the time of the shooting.
According to court documents, the defense established probable cause, and the case is set to be heard by a grand jury."

Above is the post about a woman employee's phone that had text messages allegedly about the things that led to the shooting. She was at the lunch with the Sheriff and the Judge.

Yeah, I haven't read the links but I'm under no illusion of the small area and relatives and who knows who, etc. Or as to the likely goings on and in no way do I figure the deputy, the sheriff and judge were the only ones aware of the sh*t going on or in the know of some of it.

What I do know is this should be blasted out there and looked at. Like Murdaugh this kind of sh*t goes on for years and they control the area and it needs to end. I know there is a bad side to internet and trouble causers and idiots but it also BRINGS things into the open where some of these little areas are used to control and shutting things down and covering them up, shoving under the rug. Some are used to controlling their little area and have always been able to but it getting out there puts them, bad or good, in total attention by the masses.

Man could I sidetrack on this. I've known people in my life who were messing with their best friend's wife, etc. and yet would tell you and all knew they were good buddies. OR DAUGHTER. etc. Adult though bur barely. Yet it's the tightest of buddies but that attitude, that way. it is like some sick competition too yet they'd call selves the best of buddies.

I can share some examples but won't.

So a court employee? Educated guess? Clerk? Someone in charge of closing up or access to the couirthouse or judge'\s chambers/ Again I didn't look at the links and you are more up on than I so curious to your thoughts/leaning...

The person isn't named but maybe it will come out in the arraignment on Monday, if it gets reported that is.

Well not me, will be back to the grind. That's my hump day. My Wed is on Monday BUT this week is all messd up as Thursday is a normal day off but it's Thanksgiving here. And insted of getting an extra, I get my days off split and then face a six day stretch in a row. Dreading it. You know it wouldn't be so bd if on a holday we actually ended up with three off instead of two but nope, it's ctually worse.

Let me know if you can. I seriously think I'm going to join some channel, a good one, not sure which yet. As a member I mean. Considering a few. Will likely be an atty or LE. Tom's my first love lol but Delphi was only his second case and he doesn't do such routinely. Lol.

Yikes! So the sheriff had an argument with his wife the night before and then he went in to (probably) confront the judge over what was going on and got so angry he shot him. Wow.

Former Kentucky sheriff accused of killing a judge appears remotely from jail during court hearing

A former Kentucky sheriff accused of gunning down a judge last year, stunning their tight-knit Appalachian community, appeared remotely from a jail Friday for a court hearing as defense attorneys and prosecutors discussed preliminary matters that will lead up to his murder trial.

Former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines has been jailed since the slaying last September, but his attorneys indicated they will ask that bond be set at another hearing not yet scheduled.

Circuit Court Judge Christopher Cohron said he would be “glad to address bond” then. It was the first hearing before Cohron since his appointment last month as special judge in the case. Defense attorney Jeremy Bartley said the matter of whether Stines should be released on bond had been in limbo until Cohron’s appointment.

Participants in the court hearing Friday appeared via a video conference. Stines showed no emotion as he sat quietly behind his lawyers at the eastern Kentucky jail where he’s being held.

Bartley told the judge that defense lawyers are reviewing “voluminous” amounts of potential evidence provided by prosecutors. It could take prosecutors another four to six months to amass all the potential evidence and complete any testing of it, prosecutor Jackie Steele said.

“We still have some things coming in and things being tested,” Steele said.

There was no mention of any specific evidence Friday, and police have given no motive for the shooting.
