Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Prosecutor is asking Travis McMichael's best friend about racially-charged text messages the two exchanged. Prosecutor asks Langford, do you remember a text about "shooting a crackhead coon with gold teeth… remember something about newports? A text message?" No I do not remember <snip>
Prosecutor shows full text exchange, Langford remembers. P: Do you remember text conversation "in which Travis was talking about shooting a black coon?" L: He was referring to shooting a racoon. P: Shooting a racoon with gold teeth with a Hi-Point 45? L: He was being facetious. <snip>

I haven't gotten that far yet if it was the recent bond hearing. I have watched about half of it so far. It has had little impact on me thus far, the defense's case for bond, I see it as pretty weak. She put up a landlord of the McMichaels willing to mortgage the home they live in for bond which I found meaningless other than it shows she would vouch for them. It would only be worth $200,000 and some change. There was then a person Greg McMichaels worked for for a short time who never even did things with them socially the way it sounded to me. He mostly said he was a good employee selling boats and that he was trustworthy because he was a cop and that type of thing. Then there was his cardiologist who was likable, they are trying to use a heart thing and Covid but he was pretty unbiased and the prosecutor hit home some good points with his questions on cross. They do treat in jail, his condition is hardly the worst nor is he currently having issues, it is managed with medication, he is hardly the worst nor the only one with such, the same condition would be present at home or in jail and one of my favorites, when asked if he could continue his treatment in jail as well as out of jail, he said prescribe medications? Yes, I can do that. That is all he is doing for him at this time, not treating him for any other reason or issue at this time.

The defense keeps talking about one other witness that is scared to come on by camera because he has seen the comments online towards the others who testified for the McMichaels. She keeps asking to give his statement without him there to do it. It has not been allowed for the moment and she put her objection on the record. She then rested on her side. I believe this was all for Greg McMichaels case, I have not gotten to watch the part for Travis yet.

For anyone who has not watched it, just a basic overview of what I have seen thus far. I still have to watch the remainder.

So with regard to your post, I have not gotten that far. So they detail some more racial texts do they? And these posts were sent by Travis? Interesting.

I don't know that I ever thought it was entirely eradicated but I believed it had much improved.

I agree, they can sit. Three men, loose cannons, I certainly don't want to see them on the streets.
What I don't get is how in the world they think it's even okay to text such filth? The people on the other end don't mind it, either? Pisses me off.

You should see how they act where my parents live. It's pretty disgusting. I can't see the point of hating somebody just because of the way they look (which is basically what they are doing). I sure can dislike somebody for the way they act, but just for the color or their skin??? I don't get it. I sure would have missed out on many fun times I've had in life if I did that.

Same here! I choose people based on the kindness factor. My heart can't fathom this kind of crap anymore than it can understand murder.

It shocks me too but I am not surprised it goes on. I think it is worth pointing out we have two generations of McMichaels who seem to share the same thinking so where the attitude comes from with regard to Travis can be made by an educated guess. All three continually share and come across with this superiority or belief rules do not apply to them and keep comparing themselves to cops and such. I truly do not think there is much intelligence here. All just my opinion.

Even the evil K-l-a-n were often businessmen by day but hid their faces at night and such. These three clearly felt their connections and felt they were so superior, they felt no need to do so and felt they could do just as they wanted and would not be charged and were untouchable. And guess what, they were right. They weren't charged, and it worked at first, until more than one person in the system came under fire and things started coming out. This to me shows an attitude and systemic problem going beyond them although the higher ups who hold any racist beliefs probably have more sense than to ever act as they did or text such things.
Or the higher ups do not feel the same way and just covered for a former member in blue although he clearly was a problem cop. However, in doing so, they denied Arbery's family justice so one can believe they harbor similar beliefs...

Just thoughts, I don't know...🤷‍♀️

How people treat yourself or others is what matters and good people come in all shapes, sizes, color, financial circumstances, etc. I fail to understand people that can even think otherwise. There are plenty who do though.

Shockingly, sometimes it is some in the older generation that are the worst (not all by any means) and there are reasons for it or there were, they came through a different time. It is not an excuse it just was a different era...

Today's racism exists behind the eyes until they are around others of their kind. I don't think racism is as prevalent as prejudice.

Well I am continuing on Day One. It is almost impossible to hear the judge and that's irritating. If one turns it up too high, then the attorneys are too loud.

Recorded jail calls sound interesting. Asking Lee McMichaels that evidence be deleted is how the prosecution put it...

Now there is something about coded letters and jail correspondence...

And something about how inmates contact other inmates in something called boomeranging I think they said. They send out mail that then gets returned to the other inmate by putting down the other inmates return address if I have it right...

The prosecutor is pretty good, he has three attorneys on the other side. They seem to wanting to be try this and it is just a bond hearing...

News to me. Stray pellets hit someone's house in this case and they say could have hurt someone else, etc. Additional damage done, showing danger community.

The mask rules must be different there. Court personnel is wearing them or are distance but others are not... The defense is not at all...

The prosecution let the defense put on their case and objected to almost nothing. The defense is objecting to everything. I guess that's par for the course though, it is the defense that hopes for an appeal record...

Greg Mc called DA Jackie Johnson from the crime scene, who he no longer worked for...

McMichaels immediately claimed his status at the scene to officers of being former LE and former investigator...

Judge denies bond for father-and-son suspects in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery

(CNN)A judge has decided to not grant bond to Gregory and Travis McMichael, two of three suspects facing charges related to the February shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery in south Georgia.
The decision came after the father and son appeared via video conference for their bond hearing on Thursday and Friday in Glynn County court.
"I'm relieved they'll stay behind bars," Wanda Cooper-Jones, Arbery's mother, told reporters. "Today was a good day." <snip>

Maybe we knew this, we did know about his lack of certification but at 22:43 and on for a minute or few in Day 2 video of the hearing, there is a letter to the POST Director in 2014 of resolving Greg's issue with POST and Greg's lack of training and the embarrassment to her office and help in clearing it up.... From the DA, of course the same one he called from the scene of this crime and the one he worked for previously and the one who is not out of office...

Then right after that and at 24:00 minutes in, there is a memo that in 2014 Greg Michaels became he recently became aware he lost his arrest powers in 2006, eight years before!! I know we knew he did not have them and that he was deficient and warned more than once but since the thread was closed I can't recall if we knew it was for that long. It only continues for a few minutes after that until that witness is done. There is more hearing but he is done.

I wonder how many people he arrested in those eight years. I also do not believe he was unaware of not completing training nor the deficiency and it is very difficult to believe he would not be notified of powers to arrest. I don't care if there was a computer system or not, I call b.s.

I wonder how many sit in prison or jail over an arrest from an officer that had no power to arrest. What a liability... Just saying...

So here is Part III. Part of me wishes I never started watching this as it is just a long overblown bond hearing, yet there are interesting parts. Had I know after Part III, I still would not see the Judge's ruling or the finish, I am not sure I would have started.

Greg McMichael's wife Lee is the main one on here and then some friend.

Lee of course describes a good man and a solid marriage but with things they have been through in their years which she says made them stronger. Never saw him ever in any altercation or fight, etc. You know how it goes, he's about perfect. She is an RN. Her dad was a physician. They are all lifelong residents as is Greg.

I don't know what the story is here but the daughter 30 is in school and lives with them and did at the time of the shooting. Travis and his son did as well (son back and forth every other week between Travis and the mother, age 4 I think). So we have two 30 somethings living at home with mom and dad and one with a grandson as well. They rent as they lost their home in the housing crash and had to file bankruptcy over debts as well. I don't say this for any reason other than it was testimony and is some background.

The prosecutor did touch on the daughter/sister posting the crime scene on social media. It touched on a conversation at the jail between Lee and Greg with Greg telling her to tell the daughter to not only take her social media down, not only shut it off but go make sure all is deleted going back. It also came up that Greg asked her to "kill" his accounts as well.

The prosecutor asked if it was not true Greg had to "retire" or be fired. Lee denied it and said retirement was planned a year ahead. It touched on the training deficiency and no arrest powers. She said the retirement was planned but because of the arrest power thing, the last three months before retirement, they worked it out so he was more behind a desk (paraphrasing) so that was not an issue... She also said he did not arrest people as an investigator for the DA anyhow... What bothers me here is as you saw above, he supposedly did not have arrest powers for like eight years before he was even aware of it (allegedly)... She almost talked like it was only a thing for the last three months of I think 2019 before he retired (if I have that date right)...

There also was, as the defense put it, a multi-racial witness who did not testify. The prosecutor asked Lee if Greg wanted him to testify but if she advised Greg she did not think it was a good idea to have him testify (I am paraphrasing through this post) on a jail house conversation. She agreed she said that. She claimed the reason was she did not want him receiving threats as they had... I have the sense there is something more here and another reason... The defense objected when it went to this subject or questions about this witness and yet they were the ones that listed him as a witness lol so it was allowed.

I will say she did all right on the stand but this was not a trial either. The prosecutor asked her a couple of questions like about her daughter and the social media that touched on a few things but he did not go at her hard or anything. In my opinion, friends and family mean very little in a case, even to a jury, not like the facts do anyhow, just because of course they are going to likely support their own and talk well of them. Of course all say he would not flee or be a danger, etc. Naturally.

Well, I didn't need to post all of this but since I have watched all I see so far, figured I would touch on what stood out and put this in the case here for a record of some of it. I am guessing there is more as again, this one ended without the judge's decision. Also, most of the thing so far has been about Greg McMichael and not Travis although at times the attorneys "adopt" I guess it is the same facts or exhibits as the other put in for the other McMichael when it applies to both. I have seen no testimony regarding Travis yet so I am guessing there is another part out there somewhere. I am a bit tired of spending my time watching them. I figured a bond hearing would be an hour or two when I started the first one... Not the case here.

I don't want to insult anyone here, but I think it needs to be said. If you didn't know this type of racism existed you've had your head buried in the sand.
I hear about it all the time, but it's not around me. My head is not in the sand. I'm thankful that I live where I live and this kind of crap isn't acceptable at all. And I mean at all! Seriously, if you talked that way around anybody I know, the person hearing it would spit in your face.
