Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Judge denies bond for father-and-son suspects in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery

(CNN)A judge has decided to not grant bond to Gregory and Travis McMichael, two of three suspects facing charges related to the February shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery in south Georgia.
The decision came after the father and son appeared via video conference for their bond hearing on Thursday and Friday in Glynn County court.
"I'm relieved they'll stay behind bars," Wanda Cooper-Jones, Arbery's mother, told reporters. "Today was a good day." <snip>
Thankfully! They don't need to be out. I think I said that before but I'll say it again and again.

Well, I might as well finish it out. I found two more. Here is one. Hopefully the last one/next one is closing and the decision.

Mother and friends of Travis McMichael. What one would expect. I have heard enough of them now to realize the answers are all so almost identical in some wording, it is clear they rehearsed, maybe with the defense attorneys. All seemed respectable and were vouching for him, but again, it was what you would expect. No one ever saw a temper, none of them. All described him as the humorous guy. The answers were about identical of why he could be counted on to show up for court if released on bond. Loyal friends.

What stood out to me:

The wife Lee of Greg/mother of Travis states they have no assets to put up of their own nor does Travis. In an earlier video she testified to no Gofundme (was asked) and none put up on their behalf she was aware of. She denies savings or anything else. She admitted any bond would all have to be put up by friends and others. And yet the prosecution asked if the family hired attorneys and they did. He asked how these attorneys were being paid. Defense objected. The judge is the hardest to hear so I don't know why but it was not required to be answered. I don't really see why or what his reasoning was.

One friend when asked about Travis with other races, etc. pointed out they had one mutual black friend (may have meant in high school even) that he treated much like everyone else. He could come up with one. Later he said there were actually two when pressed with only one? But it seemed to be only one he had much to do with. Everyone can read this or take this how they want but this is Georgia and he is over 30, one seems far and few between.

This is the video that has the friend about the "coon" text. This was interesting. This guy much like the others rolled along, pretty confident, saying all the nice and usual things about Travis that they all had said. He never hesitated for an answer and never not remembered a thing. Then he was asked about these posts or texts. Two of them. And he could not recall. Total lack of memory. His memory was then refreshed and he was given the posts to read and he took his time. One was a remark Travis made to a post of his where Travis said something like "ha ha ha, Sayonara you slanty eyed F_ _ _s" online. I am quoting and think I have it correct. Nice huh?

The coon one when time to think and read he came back up remembering. He was asked again about it. He claimed Travis was talking about a raccoon. Prosecutor asks "with gold teeth?" Etc. We started seeing a different demeanor in this witness than throughout. Prosecutor then asks and then you said and give this gold toothed coon some Newport cigarettes... At that remark and question, he was really in a spot and you could see it. He then claimed it was facetious.

Of further interest, he and his wife were questioned by the GBI. I don't think I heard that with the other friends... He and his wife are the last two on this video on the stand.

His wife was next. These two know more I believe and may be glossing some now... She too rolled along seemingly honest and forthright, saying all the same things mostly. Then when asked if Travis told her he was trying to corner Arbery to the GBI, she too developed a not remembering moment... And then it became cornering to talk to him...

Also of interest is they knew of and she followed the scanner page, knowing of things in the area and neighborhood. No big deal, people probably do. However, she called the earlier February incident a confrontation... They were aware of it and Travis was talking to her husband on the phone as it unfolded...

Boy they came across good, I wouldn't doubt them too much other than no man is that perfect, until these little but very noticeable things... Of course it is easy to come across that way when just testifying for the defense in a bond hearing and even just a couple of tough questions from the prosecutor, nothing too big. I see trial being far different and they will have a much tougher time. I will also say I think the male part of this couple with the posts realized that he now looked very racist as well on the stand by these posts exposed AND his answers about them on the stand...

Just my opinion and just the highlights of this one. Otherwise it is all how perfect he is, no temper, respectful to all, etc...

Well, I believe this is closing arguments and there is still one more. I wish I had never started these, I had no idea it went this many nor this long. However, I am pretty informed on it because I did watch them. If interested, this one has the prosecutor at the start (who by the way I feel is darned good) and there are some interesting things and recordings of conversations and more regarding attempting to influence or intimidate witnesses, obstruct the investigation, destroy evidence or have it destroyed and more. Seriously the wife/mother is lucky she is not charged with assisting and aiding and abetting or something like that. The prosecutor presented a very strong case throughout imo. It then goes on to one defense attorney and while I listened, they just don't have the case the prosecution has. Imo.

Warning: It starts out with a video of the shooting and I believe it is Arbery's mom reacting in the courtroom on seeing it--at first I thought it was on the video.

Oh in the above one there is also a letter in code. I would sure like to know what it says. Anyone good at code here? These guys have done everything wrong and clearly have to try to reach people to cover things up. Imo.

Here is the final one and finally with the Judge's ruling. It is Greg's attorney and then the Judge mostly. It was irritating in that one can hardly hear the Judge. He actually said what I noticed, that the friends of Travis almost sounded identical in their words about him (I am paraphrasing). He also noted that the defense was claiming Arbery was the known thief/person, etc. and the Judge said that he had no evidence that that was the truth or case at all (again I am paraphrasing). He said some more, it was all very hard to make out. He touched on Greg's constant mention of how he was in LE, etc. at the crime scene and his contacting the DA and more. He said there was far more but he touched on some reasons and it sounded like it will all go into a written order/decision.

Anyhow, I am finally done and they are all posted here if anyone wants to watch them at some point. I tried to hit the highlights and where those highlights were.

Is this the letter you were referring to?

I think so. I did not stop it or spend much time looking at it. Do ya have it deciphered? I should take a look. Is it every 4th letter, every other letter, every other line lol? I have no idea of its meaning, it could even be a test run. He broke jail rules though was the point they made at bond hearing.

TBH I have no clue. Was the letter written by GM to the witness/friend of TM?

I believe so. There was a coded letter (this one I guess) and in one of the first videos and they also referenced a letter they called boomeranging where they reach another inmate by putting the other inmate's return address on the letter or something like that. It seems GM has practiced it all... There was also something about postcards but it was so far back in the beginning of the videos, I can't recall what that was about... I don't think they explained entirely.

It is hard to explain but they touched on many things earlier in the hearing about again the coded, the boomeranging, the postcards and recorded phone calls, etc. Then at the end, they showed a few and shared a few parts of recordings in closing arguments too but not all details or explanations were given, I suppose because they are saving it for trial and this was only a bond hearing. Zach is Travis' friend but it was said GM wrote a coded letter and it was GM being addressed when this envelope and letter was put up on the screen.

I hear about it all the time, but it's not around me. My head is not in the sand. I'm thankful that I live where I live and this kind of crap isn't acceptable at all. And I mean at all! Seriously, if you talked that way around anybody I know, the person hearing it would spit in your face.
Your head is obviously and firmly planted in the sand. I'm curious to know where you live. I'm sure you've never lived in NY, Philly, Detroit, Baltimore, DC, or anywhere close. Go live in one of those cities for just a year or two. Take the subway or the bus downtown to work 5 days a week. Get off your high horse and out of your white suburb. Go actually live and deal with "diversity". Then you can come back here and tell us how great it is.

Wow did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? Instead of bashing me and where I live, why don't you ask what we're doing right?

I have to say I didn't even know you had a horse, much less a high one lol. Are you one of those white snobbish bluebloods who attend the derby to watch your horse and your jockey? Mint julep your drink of choice? I myself prefer bourbon...

Oh no, that's right you are in suburbia... Lol.

I just can't quite make that fit with you nor your planet... Doesn't sound one bit like you at all... :)

Bringing this discussion back to Ahmaud. While all of us are not agreeable that race is/is not an issue we can discuss this as the adults we are supposed to be. Having lived in the highest crime rated city as well as the #1 most violent crime in all of the US as well as being a minority, I believe that ignorance is not bliss. As we step out of our own 'comfort' zone let's remember that each of us brings our own perception based on the roads we've traveled thus far. If this discussion cannot be had or is too difficult please feel free to scroll and roll. Racisim does indeed exist whether we want it to or not in the US, however it may be that we've adapted instead of questioning why. (MOO)

But Ryan Marshall, a 27-year-old black man who has lived in the Brunswick area since he was a young boy, says he has experienced more direct prejudice: His co-workers have called him a racist slur "if I don't do exactly what I'm supposed to do."

"The difference between me and Ahmaud is I live a life where I take tippy-toe steps to avoid things," such as the violent confrontation in which Arbery died, said Marshall, who was among hundreds attending a protest Friday outside the Glynn County courthouse. "I shouldn't have to live in fear."

Sorry, I'm not trying to bash you, but I get frustrated with comments like this which almost exclusively seem to come from white women, who have spent their entire lives in a safe white area and have never actually lived with any real diversity. Nobody hates another person simply for "the color of their skin". Asians have a different skin color and no one presumes them to be criminal. It's based on collective behavior. Black males make up ~8% of our population but are committing ~50% of the violent crime in this country, so if someone(wisely) is more suspicious or apprehensive of black males, that isn't merely because of their skin color or blind "racism". It's just pattern recognition.

And I'm not sure what you mean, but I will ask: Who is "we", and what are we/you doing right?

Are any of you actually buying this nonsense? The most dangerous threat to a young black man's life is not cops, and it's certainly not white people. It's other black men. That's just a fact.

What 'nonsense' are you referring to specifically?

Interesting article. So the coded letter/postcard was going to a character witness... Then there are also other things including a postcard sent to Travis allegedly from the mom but said to be in Greg's handwriting...

I tell you, I am surprised the mother has not been charged. After watching hours of the bond hearing, clearly she has assisted in getting accounts wiped, social media removed and more.

These people clearly have things they are worried about getting out there and obviously do not believe the rules apply to them, even now...

The defense attorney's claim that Greg was bored so wrote gibberish for the fun of it is ludicrous. Is that the best they can do? I actually thought the defense might surprise me in the bond hearing but it was just the opposite, I was pretty unimpressed. Of course even the best lawyers will have a difficult time defending the initial actions of these three and the continued actions as well (like coded letters and dad pretending to be mom, destroying evidence and more)...
