Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Yeah, it is too quiet on that front... And the DA wasn't the only one... In the Floyd case, the other officers were charged for going "along" with Chauvin and/or not doing anything... Well there seems to be similar behavior in this case... The cops listened to the DA and didn't arrest, etc. or say anything or do anything about it either did they...?

and this is their theory on that :sigh:

"Travis McMichael's motion for acquittal, filed Tuesday, focuses largely on arguing that the killing of Arbery, 25, and other crimes against him did not happen on a public street.
Federal civil rights laws cover public spaces, McMichael’s attorney argued in the 43-page document. The Georgia street where Arbery was cornered and fatally shot is part of a subdivision, and the county never "expressly accepted the dedication" of the street, the motion said.
"

So, subdivisions own their streets? Do they maintain these streets? Jeez-o-flip!

The very definition of "grabbing at straws", if I've ever saw one.

It's not a hate crime cause I hated him (and killed him for it) on private property!

I saw something about this yesterday. I considered sharing it but think it was in a mixed video of Crime Talk where he covered a few cases and I figured something would come out just about this someone would link, I didn't have time to look.

This crime was atrocious. It did seem to be junior largely in many respects but the three came together in NOT a good way. And Greg McMichaels was a COP and worked in the system!

To be fair they did point out he saved a black man's life when in the service and did not deny he deserves time and this was a bad crime/offense and that his entire life was not bad and he was a family man, etc. BUT...

And I don't doubt with the racial tones in this and the fact he was LE he is not going to be able to protect himself in prison at his age and with his alleged health issues...

I have a shred of sympathy BUT this all could have been avoided. Many bad choices and even after, trying to use his position which I think also led to the thinking they could just police their area vigilante style.

All that said, they protect child molesters in prison and others like Watts and other LE in prison so I guess his being protected somewhat wouldn't be against the norm these days... And I often don't agree with it.

BUT this young man had no protection and it was THREE after one WITH vehicles and guns. I don't even doubt they never expected how this day turned out and regret it, for their sakes anyhow, they are now pariahs and dealing with the consequences.

Adults or not, as a father and as former LE, etc.,, I feel he had a moral responsibility too and could have stopped this. He seemed as involved as his son but just wasn't the shooter.

But if the likes of Chauvin can be protected, then he I guess could be as well. And Chauvin didn't hunt or create the call that brought him to the scene... He certainly though turned it into something it had no reason to turn into. And these men did too. Ahmaud Arbery killed or harmed no one that day, neither did George Floyd. And BOTH are dead and don't deserve to be. That's the bottom line in my opinion. I feel much differently about the Kim Potter/Daunte Wright case. That "perp" did endanger others and escalated the situation imo and was trying to harm, flee, etc.

Child predators, murderers etc. in prison are the ones who have the most to fear. They are targeted more so than others.

In this case, these three tried to manipulate the system based on their own prejudices. GM actually thought the video would help his case. Think about that.

RIP Ahmaud

I honestly think they can't or couldn't see this for what it was and how they think and who they are themselves. I think they truly think they were in the right or within their rights. I entirely disagree, we all know what it was and how they thought or at least I believe we do.

I have thought about how he thought the video would help many times.

They are where they should be. I think it likely they wouldn't do it again now that they are where they are and have consequences THEY are suffering or THEIR families are but it doesn't matter and had they got away with it, I think they WOULD do it again. I don't think they feel one bit of sympathy or empathy for the victim or his family, I truly don't.

Sentences should also deter others from even thinking of doing such a thing.

I get what you mean about child predators and murderers having it worse but that isn't always the case these days. Chris Watts is in Wisconsin and does just fine it seems and in fact he has his mouth pieces and causes grief for the victims' family yet to this day. It is sick. Our baby killer is in WI prison and he is just fine and safe and even free to have family picnics now from what we understand already. A slap on the hand in exchange for a murder. The judge said all the right things but the sentenced him light. Supposedly that county never did a murder conviction over 12 years we were told and that was max. If true, in other words, we should be happy with six I guess. NOT.

But I am sidetracking. Greg McMichaels, Travis McMichaels and Roddy Bryan made their choices that day and throughout and after. I in no way disagree with the sentencing and convictions. They may though have to align themselves with a group in prison that is exactly what they are looked at as being to have protection and/or be safe. I think LE or former LE and those considered racist or white supremacists are probably in pretty good danger in some prisons without protection. And U can see why but just saying, GM probably is rightly worried. For his OWN HIDE. Cared less about Ahmaud's life.

Ahmaud had to be scared to death and these three probably got a kick out of every moment of it. Until ending up where they are.

Speaking of what is going on with Ms. D.A.'s charges???!!!!! Waiting for the attention to wane and sweep it under the rug? And she is not the ONLY one in this case that should be facing things or at least sanctioned and called out.
