Mother seeks justice after son shot while jogging in Brunswick, pair involved in killing not arrested

It’s been over two months since a young black man jogging in Brunswick, Ga., was gunned down by two white men who said they thought he was a possible burglar.

Ahmaud Arbery’s mother wants to know where is the justice.

“I just think about how they could allow these two men to kill my son and not be arrested, that’s what I can’t understand,” Wanda Cooper told news partner First Coast News.

A police report states about 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23, Glynn County officers responded to Satilla and Holmes drives where shots were fired. They found Arbery, 25, dead on the scene.

Gregory McMichael, who worked several years for the Brunswick Police Department before serving as an investigator in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office, told police there were several break-ins in the neighborhood. He said he saw Arbery running down Satilla Drive and asked his son Travis McMichael to help him confront him.

McMichael and his son got a shotgun and handgun because they “didn’t know if Arbery was armed or not.”

The father and son got into their truck and drove down Satilla toward Burford Drive. Gregory McMichael stated when they arrived at Holmes Drive, they saw Arbery running down Burford, according to the report.

Gregory McMichael told police they attempted to cut off Arbery and shouted “stop, stop, we want to talk to you.”

McMichael pulled up next to Arbery, and Travis McMichael got out of the truck with the shotgun. According to statements, that’s when the father said Arbery attacked his son and the two men started fighting over the shotgun. Travis McMichael fired a shot and then a second shot.

After video appears to show black jogger gunned down by 2 white men in coastal Georgia, family demands arrests

The fatal shooting of a black man — apparently recorded on video in February and posted online Tuesday by a local radio station host — will go to a grand jury in coastal Georgia, according to a district attorney.

Elements of the disturbing video are consistent with a description of the shooting given to police by one of those involved in the incident.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in a neighborhood outside Brunswick on February 23 when a former police officer and his son chased him down, authorities said. According to a Glynn County Police report, Gregory McMichael later told officers that he thought Arbery looked like a person suspected in a series of recent break-ins in the area.

After they chased down Arbery, McMichael told police, Arbery and McMichael’s son Travis struggled over his son’s shotgun. McMichael said two shots were fired before Arbery fell to the street, the report said.

S. Lee Merritt, an attorney for the Arbery family, said in a statement that the two men involved in the chase “must be taken into custody pending their indictment.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has offered resources to Durden for his investigation. “Georgians deserve answers,” Kemp tweeted.

Kemp also retweeted the GBI’s post that Durden “formally requested the GBI to investigate the death of Ahmaud Arbery.”

Totally as expected I'd say. Did Bryan have a Count 1? Found not guilty on it or there just wasn't one?

I wonder since it is federal when sentencing will occur. Do they do it right away or schedule a date?
There was only 5 counts & Bryan wasn't charged in count 1 of the indictment 'Interference with Rights'.

Sentencing will occur at a later date.

Thanks. Kind of what I figured but it looked odd with his starting at Count 2. Well other than sentencing that concludes all of the cases on this except for appeals.
Here is a summary of the Federal indictment for reference.

The major cases yes. But don't forget about this woman!

Arbery family, supporters set sights on former Brunswick DA after hate crimes verdicts

The former Brunswick District Attorney who told police not to arrest Ahmaud Arbery’s killers is facing prison time herself because of how she’s accused of handling the case.

Jackie Johnson was indicted in September. She’s charged with violating her oath as a public officer and obstructing police.

It’s been almost seven months since Johnson turned herself in at the Glynn County Sheriff’s Office, and as of Tuesday afternoon, a court clerk told News4JAX nothing has been filed since she was charged.

The clerk said since the indictment, nothing has been scheduled, not even her initial appearance.

But it could have all been swept under the rug.

Johnson, the now-former Brunswick DA, is accused off “showing favor and affection” to Greg McMichael, who had once worked in her office. She’s also accused of directing officers not to arrest Travis McMichael, Greg’s adult son, who fired the shots that killed Arbery.

“I look at this (hate crimes verdict) as a milestone, another challenge that we’ve overcome,” Cooper-Jones said. “We still have the DA we have to deal with as well, so we’re not done.”

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump also said there’s still work to be done.

Johnson faces up to six years in prison if convicted.

8 degrees!! Dropping more rapidly now.

That's right. I know of it and think of it every once in awhile but totally spaced the thought today. Why has she not appeared yet?? Clearly she is free. Six years when in some ways what she did is worse than a lot of things... It is the type of thing that should NEVER go on by a public official... I think examples are sometimes made and I don't always agree but in this case, I think an example of what can happen to other public officials who do this, well... It was soooo wrogn and one can only wonder how many times she helped him and others do the same....

These men got what they deserved. I wonder if they realize that yet or learned a darned thing. Their families also will now pay the price. A little boy growing up without dad, a wife who I suppose will receive her husband's pension but who and how were attorney fees paid, they have to total a lot...

I would have to say these were landmark cases and one wonders how many others something like this went on in that were shoved under the rug and gotten away with... In another time, this one would have been too, they tried and it was working, it took public and family constantly keeping up the noise about there being something wrong. Vanessa Guillen is another.

The idea these kind of things go on yet and blatantly so with no fear of reprisal or concern is staggering. Oh and Murdaugh... All about who you are and who you aren't... Black or white. Male or female. Rich or poor. Connected or a "nobody"... Sick. Disgusting. The tides are turning but it is slow, too slow going.

I wonder if she sent any racist texts back and forth too.
