Missing nine-year-old girl was holidaying in the Blue Mountains, search continues

Police are continuing an extensive search for a missing nine-year-old girl who was holidaying in the NSW Blue Mountains.

Charlise Mutten, 9, was reported missing from a Mt Wilson property at about 8.20am on Friday and has reportedly been missing since Thursday.

Acting Superintendent John Nelson said Charlise is originally from Queensland and has been holidaying with her family in Mt Wilson over the school break.

Superintendent Nelson said Mt Wilson is a large area to search and police will use all resources possible to try and find the girl.

"The Mt Wilson area is a small community surrounded by bushland and some rugged bushland," he said.

The search restarted at first light with police holding grave concerns for the girl's welfare.

Crews looked in tents and bins for any sign of the child yesterday.

Officers are investigating all possibilities in the search for Charlise.

"She's a nine-year-old girl and she's missing we're here to pull out every stop that we can," Superintendent Nelson said.

"We're not discounting any scenario at this stage."

A woman was comforted by ambulance officers at the search centre before being taken to a Katoomba hospital.

Police are appealing for help from the public and have sent out geo-targeting messages.

Her parents' house has also been searched and is under police guard.

Superintendent Nelson said it is a "traumatic" experience for the family.

A car was seized in Penrith by police yesterday.

9News understands the homicide squad has been called in to assist local detectives.

Medical condition makes it sound like something she "has" like diabetes but who knows with the way they word things sometimes.

I guess I thought she collapsed in grief/anxiety/panic reading it early on.

Since reading she has dealt with drug addiction, it can't help but stay in the mind or cross the mind as a possibility she was using or went on a "bender" even though we don't know she is using at all. As for him, people aren't guilty by whom they associate with but one has to wonder if she is using, if the fiance uses or has any drug issues. Also, have we had any hint how long these two have been involved? I don't think so. It said above she had two children as well (mother of two) but no hint of the other child's age or whether they are full siblings and even if the other child was with on the holiday.

If one of them is guilty of doing something to her, I lean towards him as they took his vehicle and have questioned him. She also was the one who called it in, not him. However, that's not to say that she couldn't have used his car or they both could have, or that they even found anything. It's also not to say mom has not been questioned or will be.

In most cases when it appears that neither of a couple reported a child missing in a timely manner, it usually points to both being involved or one perp and one helping to cover imo. That could certainly be the answer here, unless there is something she believed or an explanation of why she did not realize she was missing until that morning or call it in. If she didn't believe for some reason she was somewhere else, etc., then serious neglect and inattention would seem to apply at minimum.

On an unrelated note, I wonder if there are people with weddings long planned who have now lost their venue. The website seems to be down as far as I can tell, I get to a welcome page but can't seem to get further but I'm no expert on that.

A man has been charged with murder after nine-year-old Charlise Mutten disappeared from the Blue Mountains last Thursday.

The 32-year-old was arrested at a unit in Surry Hills, in central Sydney, about 8:30pm yesterday.

The man is due to appear at Central Local Court later today.

The ABC understands Charlise's body was found in the vicinity of the Colo River, about an hour from the Blue Mountains, where they carried out a search last night.

Agh. How sad. :(

Not surprised. The few indicators we had seemed to point that way... Still don't know if mom knew anything or not or what the facts are but they did seem to be pointing his way.

TWO WEEKS. She leaves granny's for two short weeks with mom and fiance and this poor child ends up this way!

I truly want to know how long these two were together and how many times the child has been around him and for that matter, the last time mom had her as well.

RIP beautiful girl.

Marcus Paul in the morning page that I referenced earlier is reporting the same thing.
So that's two sources now :( At least they nailed him. I wonder how it came about--finding her and his arrest both.

I still also wonder if the mom knew anything or not and why no report until the next day.

Hopefully the answers will keep coming.

🤬

Ongoing investigations by the strike team led officers to a Sydney unit on Riley Street, Surry Hills, where they arrested Justin Stein on Tuesday night around 8:30pm.

He was then taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with murder.

The man was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court on Wednesday.

That was about 4:30 a.m. my time this morning.

ETA I have a thing about time zones.

It's a bit confusing that DM says he couldn't get her through the scrub into the river but that a boat was reported used prior which had them searching the rivers.

I wish they and other news orgs would stop calling bfs and fiances a child's stepfather. They are not.

I've seen 2 different times. So, for now let's say 1 to 1.5 hours to where she was found in the barrel. That's 2 to 3 hours round-trip, not including whatever time he was actually stopped at the disposal site.

Based on a rough estimate of neighbors seeing a vehicle leaving the property at 4:30 a.m., that would put him getting back at what? 6:45 a.m. at the earliest? Time to clean up, maybe rouse the mother (or not), have a good fake search, and call the police.

and was mom hospitalized before or after she was reported missing?

So in one of these articles, I saw something about a press conference I thought on Wednesday. It probably is Wednesday there isn't it? Just wondering when that will be aired or released.

I am pretty sure it was after she reported her missing. It was in the first articles here. Not swearing to it but I remember thinking the cops came and at some point she collapsed or some such and I felt it was maybe grief or panic or something. At that point, I had no idea of any former drug use. This is just my recollection in first reading this a few days ago.

i too caught that one article says where she was found was an hour and the last one I read said 1.5 hours. Never thought about the round trip but yeah it may fit with that 4:30 vehicle report... And then shortly thereafter her reported missing...

How long I wonder is the mother going to be left alone as far as answering some questions or us finding out what their story was... I'm not saying she was involved, just that she either was told something by him that she naively believed (not involved) or was part of it or a coverup (involved).
