Got my Masters degree from here. :(

Killer who stabbed 4 Idaho students to death still at large

The killer — or killers — who stabbed four University of Idaho students to death remained at large Tuesday, prompting many students to leave the campus in the idyllic small town despite police assurances that there was no imminent risk to the community.

So many students had left the scenic tree-lined campus in Moscow, Idaho, by Tuesday that university officials said a candlelight vigil scheduled for the next day would instead be held after the Thanksgiving break.

The students, all close friends, were found dead in an off-campus rental home around noon on Sunday, and officials said they likely were killed several hours earlier. Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt told the Spokane, Washington-based television station KXLY that her preliminary investigation showed the students were stabbed to death. There is no indication that substance use was involved in the deaths, Mabbutt said.

Might want a thread on this one. Hard to believe though this would take very long to solve or very long for an arrest.

Even more questions coming from University of Idaho homicide investigation

Four families that should be planning Thanksgiving dinner are now planning their childrens’ funerals instead.

Latah County Coroner Cathy Mabbutt said the deaths of Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin and Kaylee Goncalves — four University of Idaho students who were killed over the weekend — is one of the most traumatic deaths she’s ever experienced.

On Tuesday, there is very little new information from the Moscow Police Department. Investigators did say they believe an “edged weapon” such as a knife was used in the killing.

It’s been three days and the crime scene hasn’t changed. An officer is watching the home where it happened 24/7. Police still don’t have a suspect or a weapon, and something that happened earlier today may make finding the weapon harder.

Waste crews cleared out a dumpster on Tuesday, and police stopped the trash truck from going any further. Police would not comment on the trash removal or anything else in the homicide investigation.

“There’s quite a bit of blood in the apartment and it was a pretty traumatic scene to find four dead college students in a residence,” Mabbutt said.

Mabbutt is commenting on what happened, saying the scene she saw Sunday night was gruesome, and any new clues are needed for this investigation.

“There could be some evidence of the suspect that we get during the autopsies which would be helpful,” Mabbutt said.

This is what I just don't understand...

University of Idaho murders: two roommates were at home when four students were killed

Two roommates were at the Moscow, Idaho home while four University of Idaho students were killed on early Sunday morning, but didn't call 911 to report the incident until around noon, according to Moscow Police Department Chief James Fry.

Ethan Chapin, 20; Xana Kernodle, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21 were killed inside a home on King Road between the hours of 3 and 4:00 a.m., according to Moscow Mayor Art Bettge.

Police found the deceased students when responding to a call regarding an unconscious person on Sunday at 11:58 a.m.

In a press release on Tuesday, police said that the suspect used an "edged weapon such as a knife" in the attack, adding that investigators believe the incident was "an isolated, targeted attack" with "no imminent threat to the community at large."

Fry said in a press conference on Wednesday evening that two roommates were inside the home during the attack.

He added that the two roommates were "unhurt," and didn't say if the individuals were witnesses to the four students being killed.

As of Wednesday night, Fry said that police don't have a suspect and are working to identify a person of interest.

Hold on here a minute. Two people were in there when the murders happened and they don't know anything? That doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever!
Mmm hmmm. Not only home, but apparently didn't see or hear anything. And didn't find them / call 911 until almost noon.

No weapon was found on scene.

They originally said it was an "isolated incident" and "crime of passion" and the greater community was not in danger. Then they retracted that.

Police seek ‘Rambo’-style knife in University of Idaho murders probe: report

Authorities are looking for a "Rambo"-style knife in connection to the grisly slayings of four University of Idaho students, according to a local report.

Scott Jutte, general manager of Moscow Building Supply, told the Idaho Statesman Wednesday that police had visited the store more than once asking if any Ka-Bar brand knives had been sold.

"They were specifically asking whether or not we carry Ka-Bar-style knives, which we do not," Jutte said in an interview with the local paper.

"If we did, we could’ve reviewed surveillance footage. But it wasn’t something I could help them with," the manager continued.

Ka-Bar knives are about 6 inches long and "similar to the knife Rambo has," Jutte said. They have a blade on one side and a serrated edge on the other. The combat knife was issued by the U.S. Marine Corps in the 1940s, according to the company’s website.

At a press conference Wednesday, Moscow Police Chief James Fry said investigators are pursuing every lead and believe it was an isolated, targeted attack based on the evidence at the scene.

He urged locals to "stay vigilant" as the "individual is still out there."

I agree the biggest question is how did someone kill four people with a knife? Woudln't the others yell, scream or run with the first victim's attack? Two other roommates home who are alive is another huge question.

Someone said that maybe there were three different bedrooms. One for the couple and one each for the two other girls. Still no one woke up?

As for the two surviving roommates I guess MAYBE if there is a separate area or unit like the basement or upstairs and/or they were asleep or music blasting or with headphones on or something...

But all of these things or some of them? Seems very unlikely.

From what I heard the couple was at a party and the two girls were at a bar that night. So it is entirely possible each two arrived home at different times... Maybe someone was lying in wait for the first pair and then waited for the second pair. And if two attackers, then that would explain it even more so...

OR the two surviving ones had something to do with it...

It's a bit hard to believe all four would be passed out to the point none of the four awoke while the others were being attacked...

A LOT of info out today.

The roommates are the two on either end of the photo. It was previously released with the faces blurred.

The two University of Idaho students who survived the crazed knife attack that left four of their friends dead at their shared off-campus rental house are students Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Speaking to DailyMail.com, Idaho State Police spokesman Aaron Snell said the two survivors are helping police with their investigation but would not give further details of how they survived or whether either Dylan or Bethany called 911 later on Sunday morning.

He also told DailyMail.com the pair are not suspects but said every possibility is being looked at by the investigative team which now includes detectives from the Idaho State Police and the FBI as well as the Moscow Police Department.

Neither Dylan, 19, who is from Boise, Idaho, nor Bethany, a member of sorority Phi Beta Phi, have responded to messages from DailyMail.com and both have locked their social media profiles.

So it looks like Kaylee and Maddie were at the bar, then the food truck, then home. Ethan and Xana were at a party for just an hour from 8 p.m. until 9 p.m. and then no evidence where they were until 1:45 a.m., a big gap. I don't mean it means anything, just that their whereabouts in those hours are not given. Kaylee and Maddie's timeline is pretty tight.

Do all arrive home at 1:45 or it is just known all were there at that hour but could have arrived sooner with Ethan and Xana? Kaytlee and Maddie it probably is accurate because again that timeline is pretty tight and there are likely Uber records.

University of Idaho murders: police can't say if survivors are witnesses or suspects

The female roommates who were home when four Idaho college students were savagely stabbed to death Sunday in a house near campus haven't been ruled out as suspects, an official told Fox News Digital.

"These are people who may have seen the crime but on the flip side may have committed the crime," said Aaron Snell, communications director for the Idaho State Police. "We don’t know if they are witnesses, victims or suspects, so until we do a thorough investigation, naming them would be inappropriate."

Snell added that the roommates had been "fully cooperative."

It was revealed Wednesday at a press conference, that the roommates had been home when Ethan Chapin, 20; Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were brutally attacked with an "edged weapon," likely a knife, between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m.

Police found the gruesome scene on King Road, in Moscow, Idaho, after responding to a 911 call around noon reporting an "unconscious individual."

Authorities haven't identified the caller or offered an explanation for why the savage murders weren't reported sooner if there were people in the same house.

Snell said investigators hadn't determined whether it was a single assailant, or zeroed in on a motive.

"Right now, all options are on the table. We haven’t excluded anything yet," he said. "We have not come to any conclusion yet, and I know that’s frustrating to the public, but this is a very complex and difficult case."

The size of the crime scene, the number of victims and the amount of forensic evidence that has to be processed makes the investigation more challenging, he said.

Mabbutt told NewsNation that the victims were found in bed and may have been ambushed in their sleep.

"It has to be somebody that's pretty angry in order to stab four people to death," she said. There were no signs of sexual assault.

Grab them from behind and slit their throats and there wouldn't be much noise.
