A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

In what I saw last night which I think was most of the interview but broken down in pieces, I found her mostly believable. Maybe I'm gullible but I think overall she was telling the truth and at least she was willing to say something and come out. I do think there are things she may be holding back which I think/hope she did share with LE.

I do know this, I disagree yet again with what they are doing outside their home. Her children do not deserve this. If someone wants to keep an eye on them and the home and activities that is one thing, and hopefully it would be LE anyhow, but the harassment is going to lead nowhere. Can we hope people will now leave them alone? I wouldn't count on it. And now that they HAVE gotten a reaction from her, I hope they don't get worse to get yet another one.

Well, everything she says here is right on and I hope she means it all. I give her credit for telling him to come in and get them out of this mess. I keep thinking HE is the one leaving his parents and sister to face the anger while he cowers and hides.

I tend to believe her but time will tell. It is entirely possible Brian and the parents kept her out of it. It seems to me it was said she would not take the Petito calls or answer them either and if so, I don't like that (when Gabby was missing).

She does at least mention them and say they deserve answers.

I give her credit for doing what her parents have not. Facing media and choosing to do an interview. I hope she is now left alone for her children's sake if nothing else.

Yeah, it's questionable that she didn't answer the Petitos. Also, what did Brian say when he came back to both her and her parents about where Gabby was when he came back in the van? I can't believe that neither asked where Gabby was. So, what did he say?

Yes, I do not like her not responding to them and that is one thing that leaves me with some doubt about her.

I would HOPE that whatever Brian said when she realized he had the van, etc., if anything in her presence, that she has shared that with the FBI but not with us. She did say, if true, last night that they know everything and there are things she cannot share. Again if she is telling the truth.

I don't think he is the type but perhaps if he sees her on the news asking him to come in and get them out of this mess, he will feel some guilt over what is happening to his sister and her children, etc. One can hope...

Gabby Petito update: FBI’s decision to hold victim’s remains, cause of death ‘very unusual,’ Dr. Baden says

NORTH PORT, Fla. – Two weeks since Gabby Petito was revealed to have been the victim of a homicide, famed forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden told Fox News the FBI’s decision to withhold her remains from her family was "very unusual," as was the agency’s decision not to release the cause of her death when the manner was announced.

Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue found in his initial determination that Petito, 22, was the victim of a homicide, the FBI’s Denver Field Office announced on Sept. 21. Her body had turned up near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming on Sept. 19.

But the office stopped short of revealing the cause of death pending the final autopsy results, and days went by without the agency releasing her remains to the family – a move that Baden, a Fox News contributor, called "very unusual.

"What they're saying is, whatever they found, they've ruled out accidents, suicides or natural deaths that could cause it."

BRIAN LAUNDRIE MANHUNT: CASSIE LAUNDRIE UNLEASHES AFTER GABBY PETITO HOMICIDE

"I think the FBI would be very cautious about things because they don't want to make a mistake," he told Fox News. "Whatever reasons they're withholding, it is very unusual."

He added: "I think that the only reason would be, you're concerned that you're missing something, but that should not be a concern, because whatever is needed to investigate the death from the point of view of the medical examiner will be seen, documented and could be retained."

If a pathologist is questioning whether someone suffered from heart disease, he or she would retain the heart – "but you don’t retain the whole body," Baden said.

BRIAN LAUNDRIE MANHUNT: COULD PARENTS FACE ACCESSORY, OBSTRUCTION CHARGES?

"In 2021," he went on, "where anything of value can be document[ed], retained, tested on day one or two or three, there's no reason to keep the whole body from the family."

Sadly I can attest to the fact this is true. They take what they need from the body to include organs or samples of them, samples for toxicology, document bruises and all else of the body, broken bones, the entire autopsy. The body is then released as he said fairly quickly to the family although you can then wait months for all of the test results and final determinations, etc.

I think this is extremely unusual. There must be some reason for it although I have no ideas of what those reasons are.

EXCLUSIVE: 'He wasn't all there.' Hiker shows where he was stopped by Brian Laundrie on Appalachian Trail and tells how his 'heart dropped' when he realized he'd come face-to-face with 'prime suspect' in Gabby Petito homicide

  • Hiker Dennis Davis, 53, said he encountered Brian Laundrie on a deserted road close to a trail near the Tennessee border early Saturday morning
  • He claims Laundrie said, 'My girlfriend and I got in a fight and she called me and she told me she loves me but I got to go to California to see her'
  • Davis tells DailyMail.com that he thought Laundrie was on drugs because 'he was acting weird' but said he wasn't slurring his speech
  • 'After a month of hiding out, after killing someone that you supposedly love, it's got to be wearing on him,' Davis said
  • He said he didn't realize it was Laundrie at first, until he looked up a photo 15 minutes later and then was adamant it was him
  • A recording of his 911 call was released, which captured Davis telling the a North Carolina Sheriff's Office dispatcher he was '99.99 percent sure' he saw Laundrie
  • Laundrie is being hunted by the FBI, and an arrest warrant has been issued for the 23-year-old fiancé of Gabby Petito

The hiker who claims to have spoken to Brian Laundrie on the Appalachian Trial has told DailyMail.com how his 'heart dropped' when he realized he had come face-to-face with the man suspected of killing Gabby Petito.

Dennis Davis, 53, says he was stopped by Laundrie around 12.30am Saturday morning on a deserted road near the Tennessee/North Carolina border - 700 miles away from where the 23-year-old fugitive was last seen near his home in North Point, Florida.

Showing DailyMail.com where he encountered Laundrie in his first video interview, Davis said he didn't realize it was him at first, until about 15 minutes later when he pulled up a photo of him, saw the matching beard and mustache and immediately dialed 911 and the FBI.

'When I first saw him I kind of thought he was on drugs because he was acting weird,' Davis told DailyMail.com of their interaction, adding that Laundrie spoke of heading to California to see his 'girlfriend'.

'But as I thought about it, I don't necessarily think he was on drugs because he was talking very clearly. And that's when I thought, after a month of hiding out, after killing someone that you supposedly love, it's got to be wearing on him,' he said.

Davis, a father-of-four and engineer from Florida, is an avid hiker and was on his fourth hike of the Appalachian Trail of the year when he came across 'Laundrie'.

It was 12.30am and Davis was in his car, planning to sleep in a parking lot near the Davenport Gap before meeting a friend the next day.

He says he was making a K-turn when a white or silver pick-up truck came up behind him and flashed its lights to signal him to go ahead.

When he passed by the pick-up, the man inside rolled down his window and waved to get his attention.

Davis said, 'When we first stopped and were across from each other, it took him a minute to say something. And then he said, ''Man, I'm lost.'''

Davis said he thought the man was a hiker and asked where he was heading.

He claims Laundrie said, 'Man, I've got to get to California. My girlfriend and I got in a fight and she called me and she told me she loves me but I got to go to California to see her.'

Davis responded: 'Well I-40 is right there you could literally take I-40 all the way there to California.'

He says Laundrie shook his head and said, 'No, I'm just gonna take this road to California.'

'He was dead serious. He was obviously kind of out of his mind. He wasn't laughing. He was like ''that's what I'm doing'' and left,' Davis said.

The hiker said that the route Laundrie planned to take is a small two lane country road called Waterville Road, and wouldn't lead him to California.

Davis originally planned to sleep in that area but said he feared that the mysterious man would come back and could harm him.

'I thought he was on drugs. After seeing him I thought there's no way I'm staying here, if this guy comes back he might want to do something bad. So I took off. I got back on I-40 and headed west and it kind of hit me…what if that was Brian Laundrie?' he said.

The Appalachian Trail is familiar to Laundrie, who lived there on on his own for about three months.

I can't see what the attachments are. They aren't coming up for me.

I don't tend to believe this man saw Brian. I'm not saying he doesn't believe he did, not sure of that either. In some places it seems to be becoming a fact that "he saw Brian Laundrie" because that's what he says and headlines say. I worry this will have people looking in the wrong place but I guess who knows... All tips I guess need to be checked out but the feds haven't caught him in a white truck based on this tip and he said he notified LE pretty quickly...

Brian Laundrie's lawyer has claimed the fugitive flew home to Florida 'to empty a storage unit' five days after he and Gabby Petito got into a physical fight in Utah - before then rejoining his fiancee just two days before she made her final phone call to her family.

Attorney Steve Bertolino told Newsday Tuesday that Laundrie, 23, took a commercial flight from Salt Lake City, Utah to Tampa, Florida, on August 17.

Five days later, on August 23, Laundrie then took a return flight 'to rejoin Gabby' for the remainder of their trip.

Bertolino said the purpose of the fleeting visit was to pick up some items and close the storage unit because the young couple were thinking of 'extending the road trip' which was due to end in Oregon in October.

But the trip was in fact cut short, with Laundrie driving the couple's white campervan back to his family's home in North Port, Florida, on September 1 while Petito's body was discovered in a park in Wyoming over two weeks later on September 19.

Laundrie remains at large with a nationwide manhunt under way for the only person of interest in his fiancee's homicide.

The additional details of the couple's whereabouts - and the fact they separated for five days - raises more questions about what happened on the doomed cross-country trip.

Bertolino said he believed the couple shared the costs for Laundrie to make the detour.

'To my knowledge, Brian and Gabby paid for the flights as they were sharing expenses,' the attorney said.

'Brian flew home to obtain some items and empty and close the storage unit to save money as they contemplated extending the road trip.'

DailyMail.com has reached out to the FBI Denver Office - which is leading the manhunt for Laundrie - to confirm the timeline detailed by Bertolino.

Laundrie's alleged flight back to Florida came just days after the couple were separated by police in Moab, Utah, following a domestic incident.

Bodycam footage from the August 12 encounter reveals a distraught Petito telling cops her fiance had hit her and cut her face by grabbing her 'with his nail' during a fight when he locked her out of their van.

'He like grabbed me with his nail, and I guess that's why it looks, I definitely have a cut right here. I can feel it, when I touch it it burns,' she tells the officer.

The 22-year-old is then seen defending Laundrie saying she 'hit him first', after an officer points out marks on her arms and face.

Police had responded to a 911 call from a bystander who said he had seen a man slapping a woman outside the nearby Mayflower grocery store before driving off in a white van.

Cops determined Petito was the 'primary aggressor' and separated the couple for the night - meaning they are likely to have reunited on August 13.

Body camera video from one Moab officer was released two weeks ago, while Petito was still a missing person and the audio was unclear at times.

Footage from the second officer's body-worn camera was released last week, revealing Petito did admit to her fiancee hitting her.

According to the account given by Laundrie's attorney, it was five days after this police callout that Laundrie left his fiancee in Utah and flew to Florida.

It is not clear if Laundrie stayed at his parents' home in North Port or who he saw during that five-day period.

It is also not clear what Petito did during this timeframe as she stayed back in Utah with the couple's campervan.

In police bodycam footage on August 12, Petito tells the officer she does not usually drive the vehicle.

On August 19, Petito posted two photos on Instagram - an aerial view of the couple's campervan and a photo showing what appears to be the back of Laundrie's head sitting in front of her in the back of the van.

Are we supposed to really believe the parents all this time had the date wrong?? Both of them? Two of them have the wrong date on a son going MISSING? I do not buy it.

So what are they doing then? Trying to send this in yet another direction, different day, different possibilities as to where he is...?

I think even as likely or maybe more likely is they have realized something was not going to add up to LE OR LE found something that does not fit their story/timeline so they had to change it... Notably, people thought it was bad when they waited how many days to report it and now it is actually one day longer they waited until they reported him missing...

There is some reason the parents needed to change this date, I will bet on it...

What she posted on the 19th could not have been from that day as he was in Florida allegedly.

I don't believe one word that comes from these parents or through Brian to these parents or the attorney.

Who knows why he really flew back, perhaps they broke up, maybe she did not want him there. Did she even want him back when he came back? I'd really like to know if round trip airfare was purchased when he went back to Florida. And perhaps it was who knows.

So they want to allegedly extend their trip past October but are worked mid August about emptying the storage unit to do so. Thinking way ahead that's for sure.

Where did Gabby stay when Brian was gone and did she feel safe there alone?

There is part of me that wonders even if his parents were kicking these two out... They aren't at home, going to extend their trip (if true), etc...

Then I don't know what kind of storage unit they had but I know the ones around here, average ones range from $25.00 to $75.00 a month for the typical largest (and usually a bit less)... A round trip flight seems pretty expensive compared to just extending the trip and pay the monthly storage fee... It just doesn't add up for me... I will also add there are TONS of storage facilities around here and they are ALL month to month so it isn't about a lease most likely...

Why are certain things getting clarified today or changed...? Is it because the sister spoke out...? And we also have a Dr. Phil show with the Petitos...

Just talking out loud. I don't trust much that comes from their attorney or them... I am sure the flights can be and were confirmed. So admitting to it makes sense but the reason for him coming home, I'm not so sure of...

As to what wasn't going to add up is the video taken by one of the news reporters of the Mustang in the driveway on Wednesday night 9-15 when the parents said the car was in the Carlton Reserve. That has never added up. Now, if I remember correctly, the police came to their house to talk to Brian and that's when they reported him missing. I do not recall any reference to the Laundries calling them to report him missing. Makes me wonder if this correction now is a move to head off a charge for not telling the truth about this "hiking" trip. That video is pretty hard to dispute.
