A 22-year-old New York woman who documented her cross-country van road trip on social media was reported missing by her mother on Saturday after her fiancé returned to their home in Florida without her, reports said.

Gabby Petito and her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, embarked on their road trip on July 2 from Blue Point, New York, Newsday reported.
The two were living in a 2012 Ford Transit van and documenting their travels on Instagram and YouTube, often using the hashtag #vanlife.
Petito was last seen checking out of a hotel with Laundrie on August 24. She last spoke to her family on the phone the next day, telling them she had arrived at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, her mother, Nicole Schmidt, said.

Her mother told reporters on Monday that she FaceTimed with Petito around August 23 or 24.
Petito's most recent Instagram post was shared on August 25.

Schmidt told Fox News on Sunday that she was unsure whether her daughter had left Grand Teton. She said she exchanged texts with Petito's number twice after August 25.
"I did receive a text from her on the 27th and the 30th, but I don't know if it was technically her or not, because it was just a text," Schmidt said. "I didn't verbally speak to her."
Laundrie eventually returned to the couple's home in North Port, Florida, without Petito, though it was not clear when he arrived, the Daily Mail reported.
The police in New York's Suffolk County said Schmidt filed a missing-person report on Saturday.

"Petito, 22, of Blue Point, is described as a white female, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and 110 pounds," the press release said. "She has blonde hair and blue eyes, and several tattoos, including one on her finger and one on her forearm that reads 'let it be.'"

The press release said authorities had recovered the couple's van during their investigation.
Petito and Laundrie had been living in North Port together for two years before they set out on their road trip, the Daily Mail said. Petito announced their engagement on Instagram in July 2020.

She could be anywhere as they were traveling cross-country. I put the location as the last place her family could verify that she was still in communication.

If it's a letter to try and mend fences with her son, why the BURN AFTER READING at the end?
Exactly. There wouldn't be that need would there? In fact if it was done to show her son how much she loves him, she'd want the opposite, it to have meaning to him and he would feel her love so deeply he would keep it as a memento wouldn't he...?

It doesn't fly. Doesn't wash. Does NOT compute.

I felt for them some and I do think online types and others staking out their house and going crazy online with the stupidest shi*t was so not okay. But I was not okay with their decision to not respond to the Petitos when they were frantic about Gabby and lawyering up. Right there shows a lot. While I don't agree with it, I can even understand them loving their son, or being put in a hard position by his actions, and more BUT they made the wrong decision, at least she did.

She is right up there with Aidan Fucci's mother who washed his jeans. And she was charged. Roberta is darned lucky she isn't charged criminally or that maybe they don't have enough to show she or dad aided him after Gabby's murder but I have no doubt she did or would have, the letter shows that.

I wonder if she gets the fact that even though Brian knew she loved him and would do anything for him as she portrayed in this letter, bury a body, lie, etc., that he KNEW she had no such power to get him out of this one and the deeds he had done. I don't doubt up to a certain point he thought mommy could save him or get him out of his worst mess yet but I think he started to see the writing on the wall and even before that knew how bad it was as far as what he did...

MOST parents would do and defend their children to no end if they thought them innocent or something an accident, etc. That is where Roberta is different. Her very remark about helping to hide a body no matter when it was written shows that even if he murdered someone, she'd not blink an eye and would help him get out of it. Most parents would be devastated if they realized their child was guilty and it would break their hearts but they'd do the right thing or at least not help cover it up and be heartbroken facing their child going to prison or knowing they did such a thing.. She WOULD help cover it up and not blink and eye and she basically said as much.

RIGHT????!!!!! EVEN if that was true, was she suggesting something...?

Although I don't believe for one minute it is true. This letter was due to what happened, Gabby's murder.
If it was, it obviously wasn't mailed though and given to him afterwards, so how would she have helped bury the body that was already buried? I'm pretty sure it was prior since he seemed to go directly back to mommy after he killed her and that shows premeditation to me.

That's a good point but why if it was simply a professing of how deep her love and that she would do this and that for him or truly innocent, then why the "burn it" part after reading.

Maybe she was simply saying to him that had he asked she would have helped bury BUT how do we know when they found out she was in fact already buried? For all we know, Roberta may have thought Brian had her stashed somewhere or her body stashed somewhere and did need help disposing of her or so she may have wondered or thought... Then the file in the cake in case he was facing prison, etc., who knows if he shared all with mom and dad or not or when... He wouldn't have been facing prison prior to killing her or have need of that cake with a file...

Gabby wasn't found right away nor was Brian.

The fact the letter is undated makes anything possible but I think the facts fit better that it was after Gabby went missing... Roberta may well have been exploring and not known all and just said no matter what he did or what he needed, mommy would be there.

This says better than I can why this letter was very likely written after Gabby was murdered. I think/thought the same. Just listen to the first 15 minutes and it pretty much sums it up. I haven't gone further yet myself but am sure it goes on to cement it even more.

This isn't typical mom/son banter, this is in response to what happened and Brian being suicidal, distraught, knowing he is done for, etc.

Hidden True Crime the another night, should have shared it but just don't have the time right now to be on top of things, gave all the reasons this letter was after the murder. Linda gives her reasons here. Linda also says as I said above that IF it was before then an argument can be made there was a plan to kill Gabby. That's key to me as to why it was after among other things....

The Gabby Petito civil lawsuit in Florida appears headed to trial after a judge denied all of the motions to dismiss the case and gave the defendants 10 days to respond.

The suit argues that Brian Laundrie's parents and their attorney, Steven Bertolino, knew that Petito was dead when they issued a public statement on Sept. 14, 2021, that said they hoped she's reunited with her parents. At the time, law enforcement was investigating Petito's disappearance as a missing person case.

The trial is scheduled for May 2024.

"After review of all factual allegations of the Second Amended Complaint, and all reasonable inferences arising from the allegations in favor the (Petitos) it can be reasonably inferred that the conduct alleged was directed toward the (Petitos)" because the statement references her family twice, Florida Judge Danielle Brewer wrote in Wednesday's decision.

That couple that took that picture they came across that showed the van parked in the woods is pretty amazing. If not for that, Gabby's body may have never been found. The time and date of her death wouldn't be known either.

In a new motion filed Wednesday, the Petito family is requesting that the Laundries produce all messages they exchanged with Brian over text and other messaging apps, including Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, between August 27, 2021, through his death. The filing requests the messages be turned over within 30 days.

Brian Laundrie retained a high-powered defense team in Wyoming with his parents’ money more than a week before his fiancée Gabby Petito was reported missing, according to the latest amended complaint filed in the Petito family lawsuit against Laundrie’s parents and their attorney.

Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt allege Chris and Roberta Laundrie and their attorney Steve Bertolino knew Petito was dead as well as the location of her remains but gave Petito’s parents false hope she’d be found alive, all while attempting to protect their son, causing severe emotional distress.

The new document, filed Thursday after Petito lawyer Pat Reilly deposed the Laundries and Bertolino, claims that Laundrie told his parents in a “frantic” phone call on Aug. 29, 2021, “that Gabby was ‘gone’ and he needed a lawyer.”

On Sept. 2, 2021, according to the document, Laundrie’s parents relayed that information to Bertolino and sent him a retainer. That same day, the filing states, “Bertolino entered into a fee agreement with Fleener Peterson LLC,” a criminal defense firm in Laramie, a six-hour drive from where Petito’s remains were found. She had been bludgeoned and strangled.

<snip>
The Wyoming firm’s partner, Tom Fleener, is an Army veteran who became a JAG lawyer and was profiled in GQ in 2017 for representing Guantanamo Bay detainee Ali al Bahlul. Fleener declined to comment on the Laundrie matter when contacted Friday by Fox News Digital.

Bertolino confirmed to Fox News Digital Friday that he collected a $25,000 retainer from the Laundries and used it to pay Fleener Peterson. He said he has not collected any payment from the Laundries for his legal role in the saga.

Bertolino also contacted other firms in the state, including a public defender in Teton County, where Petito’s remains were recovered Sept. 19, 2021, according to the filing.

Lawsuit’s 2021 timeline in question:

  • 8/27: Gabby Petito last seen alive in Jackson, Wyoming
  • 8/29: Brian Laundrie tells parents Gabby is “gone” in “frantic” phone call
  • 8/30: Brian sends phony text to Nichole Schmidt from Gabby’s number
  • 9/1: Brian arrives at his parents’ Florida house, driving Gabby’s van
  • 9/2: Christopher and Roberta Laundrie retain Steve Bertolino
  • 9/2: Bertolino enters a fee agreement with Wyoming law firm on Brian’s behalf
  • 9/6-7: Laundrie family goes camping at Fort DeSoto Park
  • 9/10: Roberta blocks Nichole’s phone and blocks her on Facebook
  • 9/11: Gabby reported missing
  • 9/13: Brian runs away “grieving” and later kills himself, according to the FBI, leaving behind a notebook confession
  • 9/14: Bertolino releases statement on behalf of the Laundries, expressing “hope” that Gabby is found and “reunited with her family”
Central to the lawsuit is a Sept. 14, 2021, statement in which Bertolino, speaking on behalf of the Laundries, told reporters it was the Laundries’ “hope” that Gabby would be found and “reunited with her family,” a statement that Petito and Schmidt say is outrageous due to the Laundries’ alleged knowledge of Petito’s murder.

Well well well... Now this is proof that the "laundry" is dirty and not only did they know but so did Bertolino that Gabby was dead and Brian killed her. I would not settle or let go of this claim ever, I'd see it all the way through to trial. Is Bertolino being sued?

I mean Brian and parents had every right to find a lawyer and to confidentiality etc. but this is a civil suit and this is just WRONG. Hope she would be reunited with them, etc. Lies. I HALF felt sorry for them. And I can even understand protecting your child But this is beyond. It is now CLEAR evidence they knew and hid the info, did not tell LE and lied to the Petitos. More often they just stayed silent but they lied and lied through their attorney as well. Retained a Wyoming law firm.

People and protestors got very out of line and out of hand with the Laundries outside their home, etc. and I don't agree with that BUT I sure the heck do not agree with this and what the Laundries did or how far they went with it. They also ended up losing their son and I wouldn't wish their plight on anyone but they made choices and continue to and they may end up with no pot to p*ss in for the rest of their live and they may well deserve it.

Imo they obstructed justice but then I don't know that they ever spoke much to LE or anyone else. If they DID and lied, they should be CHARGED.

Bertolino needs to be disbarred.
Good point. He knew yet flat out said the Laundries hoped she would be found and reunited with her folks etc. AFTER he knew better/they knew better. If there aren't ethics rules re lawyers for this and laws re the Laundries behavior and that of their attorney, there need to be.

I mean you have a right to lawyer up but they are obstructing or impeding justice and answers when they KNOW those answers no? They likely were never under oath so I guess perjury wouldn't apply. I'd like to hear some good lawyers weigh in on all of this as to possible charges beyond this civil suit.

VENICE, Fla. —
The attorney for Gabby Petito’s family says Brian Laundrie’s parents have admitted what their son told them in the days after killing his 22-year-old fiancé in August 2021.

During depositions for the upcoming civil trial between the two families, Chris and Roberta Laundrie said in a “frantic” phone call on Aug. 29, 2021, two days after the day Petito was believed to be murdered, Brian informed them that Gabby was “gone” and needed a lawyer, according to Petito attorney Pat Reilly.
