The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

Letecia Stauch was booked into the Saline County Jail at 3:15pm today in Kansas. The reason listed is “Transit/Courtesy Hold.”

So her flight wasn't so direct. Right in the middle of Kansas.

Yeah, I guess DWAP had that part wrong. I am waiting to hear his explanation :) At least the main part is correct that she was arrested and already is being extradited. I am guessing it was two different sources lol. Or maybe they changed some plan for security reasons, no idea.

To think I could have given her the one finger salute if I would have known she was passing through the area 😁

Well supposedly stepmom left Kansas for Colorado at 2 or 2:30 this morning, this article doesn't say the time but others do. I am a bit surprised they would share this info publicly just for security reasons even. I guess they want press when they arrive.

Warning, this is beautiful but tear jerking, he was such a happy child who shows love in so many of these pictures. There are many pictures i had never seen before. It has me crying and more enraged than EVER at that awful woman!

Such a sweet and beautiful boy , I hope with all of my heart that they will find him, so his loved ones can say goodbye and lay him to rest properly. 💙😢

Letecia Stauch has prior addresses in Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet and Mount Pleasant, S.C., and in Lumberton and Pembroke N.C., according to a public records search. She has also gone by the names Hardin and Hunt.

In South Carolina, Letecia Stauch was cited with domestic violence-first offense, a misdemeanor, in November 2010, but the case was dropped.

In North Carolina, she was placed on probation in 2001 and 2002, after being cited with communicating threats in February 2001, simple assault in April 2001 and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in June 2001, according to North Carolina state prison records. Details of those crimes, including where they were committed, weren’t available.

Despite a LinkedIn profile appearing to belong to Letecia Stauch stating that she is employed as a “curriculum developer” at School District 49, she does not and has never worked for the Peyton-based district, district spokesman David Nancarrow said Monday.

“Whatever she’s posted is not correct,” he said. “We have no motivations for what that is.”

Letecia Stauch received a Colorado license to teach elementary school, special education and secondary social studies in March 2019, according to the Colorado Department of Education.

She accused Hiott of contributing to what she called “harassment and retaliation” when she worked for seven days as a middle school social studies teachers in Marion County School District in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Board of Education suspended her educator certification to teach in May 2016 for six months for “breach of contract in abandoning her teaching duties” with the district.

Letecia Stauch had signed an annual contract with the Marion County School District on June 24, 2015, and had also signed a contract to teach in Charleston, S.C. for the same time period, according to court documents.

Letecia Stauch indicated she left because she experienced “harassment and retaliation at requesting to be released from her contract due to a pending military move,” which she said was denied.

Letecia Stauch alleged that the harassment and retaliation were due to the district’s superintendent’s niece being her husband’s ex-wife, Hiott.

She threatened to file an equal-opportunity complaint unless she was released from her contract.

“The harassment and retaliation claim was investigated and remains unsubstantiated,” the order of suspension concluded.

Letecia Stauch’s certification was suspended for six months in South Carolina. There is no evidence it was reinstated.
