The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

Deputies blast ‘misinformation’ in search for Colorado boy Gannon Stauch

The search for a missing 11-year-old Colorado boy is continuing Wednesday as investigators warn against “misinformation” being shared on social media, authorities said.

Gannon Stauch was last seen leaving his Colorado Springs home on Jan. 27 when he left to visit a friend, his stepmother, Letecia “Tecia” Stauch, told the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The search — which has generated at least 184 tips from the public and exceeded 2,400 man-hours by investigators — is being conducted in “very specific” areas Wednesday, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Jacqueline Kirby told The Post.

Kirby declined to elaborate on where deputies would focus those efforts.

The spokeswoman also refused to comment on reports that a neighbor said his home surveillance system caught Letecia Stauch and Gannon getting into a red truck early Monday before she returned home hours later without her stepson.

“I just kind of backtracked from Saturday to Monday, and that’s when I caught some information,” neighbor Roderrick Drayton told KMGH.

Drayton said the footage clearly contradicts what Letecia Stauch has told investigators.

“I mean, it blows her story out of the water,” he told the Denver Post. “She came back at 2:19 without him.”

Kirby confirmed that the footage remains a part of the ongoing investigation, but declined to confirm whether Letecia Stauch was caught on video as her neighbor described.

“We are not going to speak [of] its content,” she said.

No suspects have been identified in connection with the boy’s disappearance, Kirby said.

Sheriff’s officials, meanwhile, released a statement late Tuesday warning the public that “mis-information that is being spread on social media” was hindering the search for Gannon.

“Any information that is prematurely released and is not directly from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is not a credible source,” the statement read. “Any pertinent information on this case will be put out as the investigation allows. Through the course of an investigation, we follow leads and tips until those are exhausted.”

Anyone with information about Gannon’s whereabouts is asked to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office at (719) 520-6666.

I caught in the one video that they don't know whose truck this was...? In other words, someone else is involved or she borrowed a truck? Also a rumor in some coverage about a "rental" vehicle...?
When she was backing up in the drive, I had noticed that she didn't seem very practiced at backing up even on a very straight shot up the driveway. This could explain that.

That sure fits doesn't it? So IF it was not her or their truck, we have someone who should know it was their truck, if they loaned it to her, who should come forward when seeing this video. If it was someone involved, they may not come forward... However, if they were involved, why did they not drive it or were they with her? There must be, if we think about it, video of the truck appearing or showing up at the home...?

It amazes me in this day and age that home security cameras, etc. are not thought of, nor stoplight cameras, business cameras, etc. It REALLY amazes me when someone does something in a Walmart or in their parking lot. I have seen it many times in cases, do they NOT know they have many cameras?

I don't think this poor child is alive but I still hope that he is.

District Attorney visits house where Gannon Stauch was last seen

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office hasn't announced any criminal investigation into the disappearance of 11-year-old Gannon Stauch, but District Attorney Dan May made a visit to the house in Lorson Ranch Wednesday where the child was last seen.

Amid the investigation, the Colorado Springs Police Metro Crime Lab has been at the Stauch home to collect evidence. The sheriff's office insists that the Metro Crime Lab is used even in non-criminal cases because they're best equipped to investigate and find evidence in these types of cases.

The presence of District Attorney Dan May at the home on Wednesday raises questions about a possible criminal investigation -- no explanation had been given for his visit. We've reached out to the DA's office for comment.

MOO
"they" know much more about what we suspect happened. hope updates reveal something new.

WATCH: District Attorney Dan May walking out of Gannon Stauch’s home. Metro crime lab is here as well. They’ve been bringing what looks like camera equipment inside the home. May says it’s routine for the DAs office to be part of the investigation and all questions should go through the sheriffs office. I’ll have live updates on KKTV 11 News at 4 and 5:30.

What I don't understand is in the Kelsey Berreth case, it was widely known that this DA was done at the first of the year. Dan May. He continued the Berreth case as he had started it but it was my understanding he was taking no new cases and that was the last of his career. It also had to do with term limits and he had reached his if I recall correctly.

I agree though that a DA being present at the house means something.

It might mean they haven't found anyone to replace him.

Gannon Stauch case: Divers searching water for missing 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy
Another ground search underway in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs dive team is searching bodies of water near Lorson Ranch in Colorado Springs for Gannon Stauch, an 11-year-old boy who hasn’t been seen in more than a week, sheriff’s officials said.

Four horse-mounted El Paso County Sheriff’s deputies, two dog teams, and 52 volunteers and law enforcement officers also are searching for Gannon on Thursday, said Jackie Kirby, sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department’s dive team is looking in undisclosed bodies of water near Lorson Ranch, Kirby said. She declined to say which ponds, lakes or streams are being searched, but Big Johnson Reservoir is in the area.

“We have a dive team team doing searches right now,” Kirby said at about 1 p.m.

The searches near Lorson Ranch have been in response to recommendations from the public and as a result of detectives following leads, Kirby said.

She didn’t offer any further context about the tips or why the water searches were necessary.

El Paso sheriff’s Sgt. Deborah Mynatt said heavy equipment has been brought to the water search areas to break through the ice after an extreme cold spell froze the ice.

“The weather will not deter us from the search,” Mynatt said during a televised news conference.
