FBI now involved in ongoing search for missing 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

Hi Oot! Are you following this case too? I am getting very upset about this boy not being located nor any arrests yet. I pray we see both soon.
Yes he is adorable and I wanna believe he is alive. I doubt it. I watched or listened to the stepmother vs the mother. The mother talks about him in present tense. The stepmother talks about him in past tense. And the stepmother talks in a resentful tone.

also the dad had affair with stepmother while he was still married to bio mom. So bio and step moms have a history. I would have to smash her! As far as dad, think of how guilty he will feel now. One thing I question, is he married to that woman or do the threads call her stepmom because they lived together?

In my mind and according to law there IS a difference! I have been called out before for saying that but it irks me.

I don't know either if they were married. If not, I agree, she is not the child's stepmother in the true sense of the word. She is dad's gf.

She has done herself no favors whatsoever in her interviews. The video that is talked about just added to suspicions she already caused on her own.

I don't know if she is guilty but she sure does not come across as Gannon first or as concerned as she should be.

I keep hoping for breaking news on this case, and good news with him alive, but we all probably know that is not likely.

I do imagine the dad feels guilty and I imagine he knows how she treated his child and how well she liked Gannon or did not like Gannon and has let LE know. One would hope.

El Paso County: No ‘large’ search efforts for Gannon Stauch Friday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- As heavy snow moved into the Pikes Peak region Friday, the search for Gannon Stuach continued, but not with the large groups that had scoured fields and other areas in recent days.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says there are currently no 'large group search efforts' going on for Gannon. Sgt. Deborah Mynatt says their task Thursday to search a nearby reservoir, about five minutes away from the home of 11-year-old Gannon Stauch, was completed.

The Sheriff's Office has previously said there aren't as many groups on the ground looking for Gannon, but that it doesn't mean they've stopped completely.

In an interview earlier this week Jackie Kirby, the Sheriff's Office spokesperson said, "The information in where we are in the investigation has allowed us to narrow that search down to very specific areas."

Friday Kirby said there is a possibility of a few detectives going out if leads and tips led them to an area. Sgt. Mynatte also added there will still be smaller search teams in concentrated areas.

Based comments in this article, Al Stauch is married to the stepmom.

*edited to add - She and Gannon’s father have been married since January 2015.

Al Stauch told KOAA-TV, “He’s not really the type just to walk off…told my wife he was going to play and then…haven’t seen him since. … We kind of do the street light rule – when the street lights come on or it gets dark, they better be home and it was like maybe 30 minutes past that…started to worry at that point. Then I started texting all the friends that we know he goes to and nobody had seen him.”

Since they have narrowed down search areas, it seems they know something maybe from cell phone pings or videos or even someone has coughed up some information. Hopefully, we hear some news soon.

Based on Al Stauch’s comment in this article, he calls Gannon’s stepmother, wife.

Seems like if she had a cell phone on her that day, that would be a good place to start searching by where she was while she was gone. Or it was a day she left it at home so that she could say she was home all day not knowing that the neighbors cameras were watching.

We see so many cases solved by or aided by security video these days that it always amazes me when a perpetrator fails to consider it. But then I am always amazed at the stupidity of some criminals... Assuming this is foul play of course which it certainly appears to be. 11 year olds don't run away and support themselves for well over a week now.

Good to know. Thank you. I’m a mother and a stepmother myself. I know if it were me I would be terrified if I was the last one to see him and thought he was missing or cold or hungry. I certainly would not speak of him in past tense. I can’t help but wonder if she wanted the man but was resentful that children cane with the package. IMO.

they must know a lot more than what they are sharing. At this point I believe Gannon is presumed dead. Maybe they have a lot of backside information on family dynamics etc.
I hate it.

Agree. Phone pings and video are so important. We say this over and over but why are criminals so dumb as to think technology won’t get them every time?

I agree with both of your posts. I think LE knows a LOT more than we do in this case, other than maybe where he is.

And yes, with pings and video and technology, I just do not get the stupidity but then I don't understand killing to get rid of someone anyhow and never will understand that kind of absolute heinous selfishness. This has, as others have said above, the hints of premeditation as well.

Community To Hold Vigil For Gannon Stauch Saturday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – Hundreds of people plan to gather Saturday night for a candle light vigil to Gannon Stauch. The 11-year-old boy disappeared on Jan. 27.

Community members organized the vigil to be held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Lorson Ranch.

I just finished watching the above and it is worth it. About 30 minutes. There is a video from a former hike that I had not seen, maybe others have, that I do not like the body language of her with Gannon.
