FBI now involved in ongoing search for missing 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

They are searching a 35 acre area in Douglas County and expect the search to continue through the weekend, if necessary. The location includes tree areas, rough terrain and ravines. Areas outside Douglas County are also being searched. They must have received some credible tips. This is quite a search.

I hope they find this boy but this is one in which I don't think he is alive but do hope he is found. Hopefully I am wrong and they find him safe.

Her explanation of the gate key kind of bothers me. Why bring it up to start with? Who would trust a kid with the only copy of any household key?

That is a great point. We were latchkey children at probably his age in a rural area (long before there was the term of latchkey) and alone at home until our sister got home 15 minutes later or our father stopped to check on us at break from his job. I can't tell you how many house keys we lost. In no way would we be the only one with the only key. That is very odd when one thinks about it. What parent would not also have a key in case the child lost it? She is again trying to explain something that seems untrue--trying to show she could not have opened the gate. I am trying so hard to give her a benefit of the doubt but if I am honest I know which way I lean....

Hopefully I am missing some context of how the gate thing even got started, but nobody is giving a kid possession of the only copy of a household key, unless it wasn't really needed.

It could be like our big gate. There is a lock on it but you can still open it with the lock on it if you know how it works, but most people assume it's locked and not able to be opened without a key.

Another day without Gannon. I feel so bad for all the families in these missing persons cases. I’m getting ready to watch the stepmom video again. She wouldn’t even show her face. That’s telling.
About Gannon having the only key. That’s plain bs. People always stash an extra key somewhere. So I guess if he were to lose the key that would be yet another reason for her to abuse him? This woman is seriously demented. Blaming Gannon for everything.

All I know is it is in that post of hers saying he cut his foot in the garage the day before and then she saw him going to the side of the house a lot, checking the gate, he was the man of the house and proud of it when Albert was gone and entrusted with the key to the gate she posted. Don't take my word for it, my memory is sure not perfect but it was something likek that. I personally think it may be a cover for why there is no video of him leaving? And that SHE could not have opened the gate. Everyone has great points in that no parent does not have another copy of a key and entrusts the only one to a child.

She does OVER explain things. She seems more concerned about how she comes across than heartbroken and devastated that a CHILD is missing.

I rewatched the video with her and the reporter and several things struck me but one was about what she hoped when he was found and came home and her first response was that he would tell everyone what happened and clear her. I am entirely paraphrasing this and don't have it right but I think the first response would be relief, to hug him and never let go and be so relieved. Smh.

Without saying too much, I know from experience when you are asked to be quiet by LE and she was per her own post but put a lot out there to defend herself AND shared some of what she was asked not to. When one knows it may affect the case, one holds it in but she put it out there to defend herself regardless of whether it hurts the investigation or the chance of finding Gannon.

That says a LOT to me. A WHOLE LOT about her priorities.

Hi Oot, glad to see ya!

I had never watched it before. I have no words.

Lady, you were kicked out of your house for a reason.

It sure looks that way doesn't it? I am trying very hard in my head not to convict her but it is hard. I would never harass her online as some have but I do question it.

I do not think this boy is coming home and she is more worried about how she comes across than heartbroken and devastated about him missing. That is my take on her and I will say that without thinking twice.

The only way a kid would be allowed to have the only key to something is if you really didn't need it in the first place.

A group of
@EPCSheriff
staff just pulled up to the Stauch home. They got into cars then left. A neighbor told us he saw dogs go into the house

Dad With A Phone is covering this case as it is his Colorado area.

I am watching a You Tube of his right now and will post it here.

Maybe this has been said before but it so I missed it, the SM now says Gannon may have been picked up at the house. The sheriff's department says again this does not come from them and does not confirm it.

This neighbor said that most of the property owners who live out there know each other and he is unaware if there is any connection Gannon's family has to anyone or the area. I do wonder what brought them way out here, they are investing quite some time.

My guess is cell phone pings, someone saw him and her or the vehicle in that area or someone has talked that knows something.
