The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now involved in the ongoing search for a missing/endangered 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy who went missing Monday afternoon, and the task force investigating his disappearance is organizing a team of volunteers to start searching for him.

Gannon Stauch was believed to be a runaway after he left his home southeast of Colorado Springs between 3:15 and 4 p.m. on Monday. But as the week progressed, his disappearance was upgraded to a missing/endangered person case.

His stepmother said he left his home on foot to play at a friend’s house down the street on Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies and major crimes detectives had taken “extraordinary steps” to locate the boy, the sheriff’s office said. They were actively searching for evidence and taking witness statements, a sheriff’s office news release issued earlier this week read.

“He’s very young, it’s dark and cold outside and we want to bring Gannon to safety,” the sheriff’s said in a Facebook post earlier this week.

On Thursday afternoon, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and other task force members, as well as Stauch’s parents, hosted a news conference to update the community on his disappearance, discuss the steps being taken in the investigation, and to notify people in the area that they are organizing volunteers to begin a community search effort in coming days.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mitch Mahalko said the sheriff’s office received the investigation on Tuesday afternoon and started doing interviews and collecting video surveillance and talking to neighbors, working to collect new leads.

He said that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and FBI got involved after the case was upgraded to a missing/endangered child case. The FBI’s team specializes in search and rescue and “will be a good partner” in the investigation, Mahalko said.

He said the investigation was active and that authorities were conducting interviews with witnesses and collecting evidence – exhausting every lead they receive.

Mahalko said investigators were looking at “persons of interest” in the case as people who might be able to give them additional information on Stauch’s whereabouts.

He declined to say where authorities had been searching but confirmed that investigators had been in contact with some trash companies in El Paso County and in the Lorson Ranch area.

Kirby stressed that people with tips should report them to their tip line – 719-520-6666 – and not on social media because any tips sent to the sheriff’s office on social media will not be considered.

The last update from the Sheriff was yesterday. Tweets today from news outlets show searchers working with shovels & poles in the same areas. Temperatures have warmed, snow is melting, but more snow is predicted Monday night.

Gannon's bio mom has reached out to Dad With A Phone. Here is a podcast about it. He says he will be talking to her again today. I don't know that we will hear any facts of the case but we will probably hear more about Gannon and get to know him. I will try to remember to post the next one when it comes out as well.

It is only about ten minutes long.

Former FBI agent shares expertise on Gannon Stauch search in southern Douglas County

A former FBI agent is sharing his expert opinion as law enforcement searches near Larkspur for the missing boy from Lorson Ranch.

11-year-old Gannon Stauch has been missing since Jan. 27 and was last seen by his stepmother. Sunday marked the fifth day since deputies with El Paso County have been investigating in southern Douglas County.

"It's not just a random thing," said former agent Pete Klismet. "With some basis of knowledge from prior cases, somebody has told them something about the specific or general location up there where they may want to look and they may find something."

Klismet worked for the FBI for more than 20 years. In that time, he also worked on several missing and endangered children cases.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office has received 555 tips so far, but no person of interest or suspect has been named. People's online rumors and theories have accused the stepmother of being involved in Gannon's disappearance.

People in Facebook groups have also questioned why deputies have not arrested anyone yet. But Klismet says an arrest "doesn't mean a whole lot because they need to have enough information to convict somebody."

Deputies continue to partner with other agencies as the case approaches the three-week mark. EPCSO has stated finding Gannon is its top priority, but that may change with time, according to the former agent.

"Every case is different, but they do reach a point of no return where whatever you do is ineffective," Klismet said. "I'm going to guess that would be probably in a couple of weeks, but not much longer than that."

Spokesperson Jacqueline Kirby with EPCSO says no public volunteers are being used for the search in the Larkspur area. Klismet says that is probably because investigators have "specific information."

"They don't want volunteers who are untrained and don't know how to handle evidence and don't know what to do if they find evidence," he said.

Kirby says they will continue to investigate the Larkspur area before extreme weather conditions arrive.

Anyone with credible tips is asked to call the sheriff’s office’s tip line at 719-520-6666 or email tips@elpasoco.com.

Dwap is doing live chat at 3:41 pm. Weird time. I think that would be 5:41 for me. EST

I just read on live chat of dwap that stepmoms daughter who is 17, think her name is Harley, is in protective custody of CPS.
Think she is involved now? Squeezing Her mother?
Oh my if stepmom did something to Gannon and involved her daughter she is lower than lie.
if stepmom is covering for daughter, she is still low in my opinion.
