Deputies searching for pregnant Pierce County woman who disappeared under suspicious circumstances

A Pierce County family is desperate for answers in the search of a missing pregnant woman who seemingly vanished Tuesday morning.

Loved ones say it was the ultimate red flag when Kassanndra Cantrell, 33, failed to show up to her first ultrasound this week, something she’d so been looking forward, something they say she wouldn’t willingly miss.

“This is not normal, she wouldn’t just vanish…I just need her back," said Marie Smith, Cantrell's mother.

It’s been an agonizing four days since Smith last saw her daughter. It was early Tuesday morning when Smith was heading out to work.

"She just said 'have a good day at work' I said 'thank you'. She said 'love you' and I said 'love you'. And that was the last time," said Smith about her last conversation with her daughter.

About an hour later, at 8:45 a.m. a security camera caught her driving away in her 2014 white Mazda sedan from her and mother’s Parkland home. The only plan her mom knew she had that day was at some point to go to the grocery store.

“I don't think that's where she was going when she left. Everything seemed to indicate she was going to see somebody because if she was going to the grocery store she would’ve just put her hair in a ponytail and put on some jeans and headed out, but it was clear she’d taken a shower and gotten dressed. She had taken some extra time, she doesn’t do that just to go grocery shopping," said Smith.

When she didn’t return home later that day or answer any calls, the fear started to sink in. even more so when they discovered her phone was turned off. “She never turns her phone off, and she wouldn’t stop all her social interactions. It doesn’t make any sense, something has happened.”

The nightmare deepened when Cantrell didn’t show up for her very first ultrasound appointment on Wednesday afternoon.

“She wouldn’t have missed it for the world, it doesn’t make any sense for her to be gone at all," said Smith.

Smith said her daughter was about three months pregnant. The father is a friend, and though unexpected, for Cantrell it was the most welcomed surprise.

“When she found out she was thrilled because she wasn’t sure that she'd have a chance to have a baby and so she was really excited, she already picked out names," said Smith.

@Cousin Dupree wait what...? Blood.....? I must have missed that.
I could be wrong, but I took him to mean he figures they likely found blood to be considering it a homicide this quickly. It seems to happen in many cases, however, they usually give the public enough info to know that's why. I have had the same thought though, often they will not want to dash a family's hopes too quickly but in this case, they went there pretty quickly.

My thought is they found something in the vehicles or home to give a pretty good indication...?

For once @GrandmaBear is right. They have not announced the discovery of blood. It may be because they don't have the DNA tests back yet. It could also be that it's just something they're withholding from the public.

Whatcha mean for once??? I'll take it though.

Yes, seems like they have reason to believe what they do or I don't think they would dash the mom's hopes so quickly. She still has hope but...

I agree that there must be more, specially considering the FBI is involved..... as far as I know that doesn't happen unless something is severely out of place...

makes me so sad....

Me too, I just don't know what is wrong with people sometimes, it is so difficult to understand the pure selfishness which I consider to play into some of these cases/perps. Assuming of course, that this was foul play.

I would like to have some hope for her, but I don't feel much.

I am wondering something which I either missed or it wasn't mention yet.

they are saying that her phone was off at one point

BUT WHERE DID IT PING LAST....?

Investigators previously conducted a two-day search in Point Defiance Park after discovering that Cantrell’s phone last pinged off a Vashon Island cell tower, Seattle Times reported. Friends and family also gathered at the park to help search for Cantrell, Komo News wrote. According to the outlet’s interview with Cantrell’s mother, the 33-year-old’s phone pinged off “south Vashon tower just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday [August 25] before it was either turned off or died.”

I also noted this when I read it in the Heavy article above. A bit interesting...

Neighbors told KIRO7 that the SWAT team entered the house after using flashbang grenades. “The first bang I thought was a car,” neighbor Ron James told the outlet. “The second bang, I heard people trying to tell him to come out of the residence.”

Hope this helps those not from the area. I haven't seen her exact Parkland address but I may have missed it.

That is a great map thank you. It actually worries me as it makes sense.... Here to there, etc. to car left there. It is almost a "path" in order and then back (or her car left there)...

More details

There is a lot of information there. They went in with flash bombs based on information they had gotten. My guess is he has multiple weapons. They probably have surveillance footage of him dropping off the car. He claims to have had a vasectomy, but it seems he thought the baby was his. Probably lied about the vasectomy. He's been called a suspect so they must have something on him.

Why they haven't taken cadaver dogs to the park is puzzling.

I never thought of that being the reason for the flash bombs but it makes sense. I just thought it was for the element of surprise and hoping to find her alive perhaps. Clearly if they flash bombed it, he did not willingly let them in. They have never given his name so no one can check but I wonder if they could arrest him on something else, like if he is a felon with firearms--which I am not saying he is, just basing it on your thought of weapons. Clearly to be able to flash bomb they had authorization and that had to have some solid reason behind it.

Claiming one had a vasectomy when he hadn't is downright odd. And if he never wanted kids, he darned well should have had one imo.

Her mother does not seem to think she was at the park at all. She puts it down to her not taking her dogs but I wonder if it is more than that or they know more which also would explain no cadaver dogs to the park. I mean I get her reasoning with the dogs but if her daughter was going to meet someone there, she may choose not to take them, or if they had further plans after the park. IF ever at the park.

There appears to be jealousy and some history with regard to the current gf as well...

I think that they should do a real good search throughout the park....

there would be no surprise for me if they would find something there.... not an easy search area with the woods and the cliffs... as well very easy to dump her care near the dome ...
It does fit in. I wonder if they know she isn't there by surveillance video or something or other evidence? I can't think of any other reason they wouldn't search it.

I know the area there and it definitely would be a possibility.... even though the family is saying she wouldn't be there, in my opinion she can be there (don't really want to think that way, but there sure are many places to hide something/someone there or even dropped into the water... )
leave her there and then transfer the car to the dome....

I didn't realize you knew the area. I agree it sure looks likely with the map I saw. I don't doubt it, I just wonder if they do or have proof she left there with him or some such. Otherwise I can't imagine or understand why they wouldn't search it.

So there are cliffs, woods and water? The water thought keeps crossing my mind for some reason but I don't have a real reason for that. Probably because of seeing the water on the map.

There is probably a crime scene like we were discussing earlier, we can't be sure but based on what they are doing and saying, it seems likely. So maybe they are going from that evidence to where cameras show travel went next?

Since you know the area, one thought I had is could her car have been left there first? Would it be a likely place for her to park in this dome area and get in his car from there, meaning the first part of whatever happened? Or is it just kind of randomly dumped in the area after?

It is so beneficial to be able to picture a location or know it.
