PAUL & MAGGIE MURDAUGH: South Carolina vs. Alex Murdaugh for Double Homicide of wife & son *GUILTY*

This case is being kept pretty quiet, no major details released to speak of (other than it does say there were two different guns used), but no info regarding who found them, who called 911, very little else.

Of interest, the grandfather died just a few days after these murders and it sounds as if he was ill from various articles so probably not unexpected. I think of the typical motives, did grandpa have a big estate? How big in the overall family of grandpa's on down? They sound like a pretty well known family and a powerful one in their state, more on that in the article.

But it's not what he's on trial for. An appeals court could order a retrial due to too much made about his financial crimes. That's not what this trial is about. It's about the murder of his wife and child.
Actually an appellate court rule have to show Judge Newman ruled in error which he has not per SC 404b.

RULE 404
CHARACTER EVIDENCE NOT ADMISSIBLE TO PROVE CONDUCT; EXCEPTION; OTHER CRIMES
(b) Other Crimes, Wrongs, or Acts. Evidence of other crimes, wrongs, or acts is not admissible to prove the character of a person in order to show action in conformity therewith. It may, however, be admissible to show motive, identity, the existence of a common scheme or plan, the absence of mistake or accident, or intent.
I agree that a LOT of testimony has been offered to show motive since I've been watching the trial daily. Many times I've questioned if it was overkill. The lay witness' have been quite powerful.

Legal experts are a dime a dozen, imo. Kind of like opinions. The State's story started building their theory about the boat case and two witness' today provided powerful ammunition to bolster that with Blanca Turrubiate-Simpson & Nathan Tuten.

Mrs. Simpson testified that Maggie confided in her how nervous she was that the law suit for the boat case was suing them for $20M. She didn't know where they were going to get that money and feared Alex wasn't telling her everything he knew. Mrs. Simpson also confirmed that Alex requested Maggie & Paul meet him at Moselle that night and Maggie didn't want to go.

Nathan Tuten was a childhood friend of Paul's who worked at (interned as a runner) PMPED and drove Alex to the airport the week of July 4th, 2021 so he could spend time with Maggie's parents. During the car ride Alex told him that settling the boat case would be easier now that Paul wasn't around.

Just food for thought.

Plus it coming out that the boat accident wouldn't be covered by insurance, or at least not much of it and he was going to have to pay out of pocket for the settlement.

and the lying about being there, the maid's texts from Maggie and him lying about that and the timing between getting caught and Paul's trial coming up in a few days, ...

What is Paul on trial for? Also, why do they think he let Paul live?

If Mudaugh didn't do this, who does the defense say did? Is it just SODDI or do they have a motive too.
Since the only person that propably knew both Maggie & Paul would be there on that day was AM it's hard to prove SODDI. Regardless of SLED's lack of securing potential evidence the circumstantial facts are weighing heavily.

It will be helpful to hear from the ME and may have a lasting impact on the jury. At this point I don't think 'Cousin' Eddie needs to testify however this case is full of twists.

Remember too the 'Moselle' property is in a very small and remote location.

I have been getting up to date on this case and I saw this from November and don't think anything was posted on the thread yet. This is AM's banker who was convicted on six federal counts (he still has 21 counts to answer in state court) relating to AM's finances. Although convicted he is still out on bail waiting to be sentenced, however; he has filed an appeal. So will he be giving evidence at AM's trial?

From link:

"Laffitte was convicted on one count each of bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy, plus three counts of misapplication of bank funds. He also faces 21 counts of financial crimes in state court.

Murdaugh was disbarred and Laffitte was fired last year.

The Murdaugh murder case even made an appearance Laffitte's trial. Murdaugh's wife Maggie, 52, and their 22-year-old son, Paul, were shot to death with different guns on June 7, 2021, outside a family home in Colleton County.

An employee at Laffitte’s bank testified she confronted Murdaugh about missing fees from one of his cases hours before the killings. Neither prosecutors in Laffitte’s, nor the investigators in the killings, have mentioned whether they see a link between the events."

Vinnie Politan will be analyzing the two calls Alex made with experts. The one he called in about being shot at, and then the one he made about his wife and son being killed.
