SAVANNAH, Ga. (NewsNation) — Authorities have now declared the case of a missing Georgia toddler a criminal investigation after he disappeared last week.

On Monday, Savannah police drained a swimming pool as the all-out search intensifies.

“We are continuing to use every investigative resource available for us to locate little Quinton,” Chief Jeff Hadley said in a press conference held Monday. “We have conducted multiple interviews, executed multiple search warrants and have canvassed numerous specific geographic areas.”

20-month-old Quinton Smith was allegedly last seen at home Wednesday morning at 6 a.m., according to his mother Lelani Simon.

The FBI is involved, and authorities have spent the last five days extensively searching the areas near the families’ home.

Missing Georgia toddler: Police 'seized evidence' they think will move case 'forward'

As police in Savannah, Georgia, search for a toddler who mysteriously vanished nearly one week ago, the department said Tuesday that it's "seized evidence" that police think will "move this case forward."

"We're now working to analyze the evidence to see where it leads us," the Chatham County Police Department said.

Chatham County police requested FBI assistance the day Quinton was reported missing and authorities are continuing "aggressive efforts to find him," Chatham County police chief Jeff Hadley said at a news conference Monday. Over 40 FBI agents are now on the ground in Savannah, he said.

Missing Georgia toddler's mom told police she thought son had been taken: report

The mother of a 20-month-old boy who was said to have vanished from his family’s Georgia home nearly a week ago told police she woke up to find the child gone – and thought someone might have taken him, according to a local report.

Details of a dispatch call obtained by local news station WJCL shed light on the moments the mother reported her son missing.

"Complainant advised her 1-year-old son is missing," the dispatcher could be heard saying, according to the report. "She woke up, her door was open. Advised he's unable to open a door. Thinks someone came in and took him."

Hadley would not comment whether Quinton’s parents were cooperating with police or if they have retained an attorney.

Ted Williams, a longtime homicide detective-turned-renowned attorney, said detectives are likely working on piecing together "what happened between 6 a.m. that morning" and when the child’s mother reported him missing.

"And what led her at 9:40, other than the fact that her door was open, to believe that someone had taken Quinton?" he went on. "The authorities are backtracking. They’re trying to get as much information."

He added: "I can tell you it’s highly unusual, but it does happen, where a child is sleeping in a home and all of the sudden the door is open and a 20-month-old child is no longer there … It happens, but this is rare."

This one has a piece of the clip of the grandma storming in/at the sitter's home. Sitter said they have cameras and that all texts etc. between them and her she has a total ecord of too. I gather there is a full video of it of a few minutes but I haven't seen it. News Nation also says LE says they have evidence that will move this case forward now. Worded a bit different than the above but probably referring to the same LE statement.

I've been reading along and I'm just flat confused about the players in this case. Grandma has custody, but they all live in the same house? Who hired the babysitter then? Grandma?

They all lived in the same home. Grandma and her husband. Mom and her bf. Three children, two boys and a baby. Bf is father of new baby not of the other two. And then mom's brother/grandma's son stayed there sometimes.

BF worked. Gma was away on work. Mom supposedly worked, I heard at a liquor store but I also heard she wasn't working since baby born but not sure of all that.

Grandma hired the sitter but apparently mom and bf also paid her as sitter said they often asked for part of payment back with stories of needing formula, etc.

Grandma had custody of the two boys only, not the baby allegedly. It is anyone's guess whether the kids were legally allowed to be in the mom's care or not...

Logistics of getting a search together and coordinated. They have to have a solid plan, know where to start and get a qualified team together. Let's let them get it right and not waste time and resources.
I had the same thought but I'd at least be ensuring if possible nothing more is dumped in the area that they figure this neighborhood's things that day were dumped. And I also think they would be securing the area. And maybe they are doing such, no idea.

I will say though when time matters, bureaucracy and procedures always slows things down. I'm not saying he is alive but further decomposition, animals, etc. and more garbage dumped could make recovery harder or impossible. It seems more often than not, landfill searches aren't successful. We've seen a few.
