Something seems to be up in this case with them naming her a prime suspect but not arresting her? It is soooo rare we see them name anyone these days and to say "prime" suspect too...

Are they putting pressure on or seeing if she makes a mistake or goes to the landfill or gets rid of evidence, talks to someone about it, etc.? The way the grandma put it out there is a bit unusual too...

I hope they do have evidence. It sounds like they do have something, at least a circumstantial something. But you never know.
But I think of Sky Metalwala (mom named POI but never arrested) and Kyron Horman (step-mom named POI but never arrested).

Quinton Simon: Mother Ordered to Pay Child Support the Day Missing Georgia Tot Vanishes, Busted for Allegedly Stealing from Boss

Court records reveal a past checkered with run-ins with law enforcement and civil court filings against the mother of missing Georgia toddler, Quinton Simon, who disappeared earlier this month while in his mother’s care.

According to Chatham County court records, Simon’s mother, Billie Jo Howell, filed an eviction notice against Simon and a male identified as Simon’s boyfriend, Daniel Youngkin, on September 8. Both parties reportedly lived with Howell in her Savannah home. It’s the same home Quinton disappeared from on October 5.

Months earlier, on March 10, the State of Georgia and the Department of Human Services, in the interest of Quinton and another minor child, filed a motion to enforce child support against Simon. Court documents indicate that on October 5, a default order for Simon to pay child support for her two children was delivered to her.

WTOC 11 reports that Simon was arrested in Dunn, North Carolina, on a felony larceny charge after she allegedly stole $20 from her employer. According to North Carolina law, theft in any amount is considered an automatic felony in the state.

On September 7, Howell contacted police about her daughter and reported a domestic dispute taking place in her home after Simon allegedly pushed her and screamed at her. She reportedly told police she was thinking of making her daughter and Daniel Youngkin leave her residence.

“Ms. Howell said she was having issues with her daughter as she said she wanted to use her washer and it was in use,” the police report read. “Ms. Howell said she was frustrated as she takes care of the household and pays all of the bills. Ms. Howell said her daughter lives there, two kids, and the daughter’s boyfriend.”

Although she declined to press charges, Howell followed through on her plans to have the pair removed from the home when she filed the eviction notice.

On October 13, Police Chief Jeff Hadley said during a 1 p.m. presser that all evidence points to Quinton being deceased. Simon is considered the primary suspect, although no formal charges have been filed and no arrests have been made.

“Sadly, we still have not found Quinton,” Hadley said. “But our search and investigation will continue, and it will continue with every available resource we have, in order to give Quinton’s family closure and see that justice is served in this case.”

This definitely says she was wanting the two adults removed and not the kids. The part in the eviction notice only mentioned the kids in the descriptor and not in the parties involved part.

Quinton Simon: Mom of Missing Tot ‘tried to overdose with kids nearby,’ Ex-boyfriend Says [Report]

The former boyfriend Leilani Simon, identified as the primary suspect in connection with a missing Georgia toddler, says she “tried to overdose with kids nearby” last spring.

Quinton and his brother lived in the Savannah home with Simon, along with Simon’s grandmother, Billie Jo Howell. Cody Wharton, who identified himself as the father of Quinton’s brother, told the U.S. Sun that he wanted his child home with him, especially after hearing that his ex, Simon, is currently the sole suspect in the case.

“Zayne needs to be with me. I want to make sure he’s safe,” Wharton told the Sun. “I’m not sleeping. I’m at a point where he needs to be with me. Even now, I’m questioning everything. Is he hurt? What is he doing? I don’t want to get a call saying your son is hurt and going to the hospital.”

Wharton added that when Simon was depressed, she talked about overdosing, although she had her children with her. Police have not confirmed the accuracy of Wharton’s statements and Simon hasn’t released any public statements since Quinton’s disappearance.

“When she was talking about overdosing, that scared me because my son was there. But what if she had overdosed and I couldn’t get there for two hours? She’s always been unpredictable…but I wasn’t worried about Zayne’s safety until all this started going on. She was a good mother. I don’t know what happened.”

Wharton said he’s taking steps to get custody of his son. In the meantime, he says he’s worried that his son won’t be taken care of properly.

That's a good point. I sure hope that doesn't happen here too.

I wonder if they maybe name them as maybe it helps take the other children away and keep them safe? I'm thinking then someone can at least say to the judge she is a POI in the murder of a child and the other children shouldn't be with her?

Interesting that her ex says she was a good mother. Sad too if she was but now did this.

I do worry with what the ex said with the police naming her that she might commit suicide if she feels they are closing in or she is going to be arrested... Let's hope not.

I also hope they find this poor baby. I don't think he'll be found safe but I do hope he's found.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Quinton Simon’s mother made an appearance in court Monday, but not about Quinton’s disappearance. Instead, the court hearing was about concerns for the safety of her other two children.

It’s been almost two weeks since 20-month-old Quinton Simon disappeared from his Chatham County home. Since then, police have said that they believe Quinton to be dead, though they haven’t recovered his body.

Police say Quinton’s mother, Leilani Simon, is the only suspect in Quinton’s disappearance and presumed death.

Monday, she was in Chatham County Juvenile Court for a preliminary hearing about the custody of Quinton’s two siblings. It was the first public appearance of Leilani since Quinton went missing.

She arrived wearing a mask and a dress and was sitting just feet away from her mother, Billie Howell - though their lawyers were sitting between them.

Billie had custody of Quinton before he disappeared, and still has custody of Leilani’s oldest child who is around three years old.

Leilani and Billie both left the courthouse as quickly as they could after the hearing. There was a large law enforcement presence inside and outside of the courthouse.

The fathers of Leilani’s other children were at the hearing over video chat - as well as other family members. The grandfather of one of Leilani Simon’s other children drove four hours to be at Monday’s custody hearing. He said it was important to be there to support his grandchild. He also said the safety of his grandchild moving forward is at the top of his mind, as his grandchild’s mother is the only suspect in the death of one of her other children.

Judge Thomas Cole presided over the hearings.

When court was called to session, WTOC asked to have a camera in the courtroom, but Judge Cole denied the request and also sealed the hearing from the public.

Cole says he made that decision to protect the privacy and safety of the children involved, though he does understand the public interest in the case.

After he made that decision, WTOC had to leave the courtroom.

The people that stayed in the courtroom are also under a gag order and not allowed to discuss what happened.

Again, Monday’s hearing was over the custody of Leilani’s other two children - who are around six months and three years old.

We do know that legally, these hearings have to take place within three days of a child being removed from a home under emergency order, or DFCS requesting to remove a child.

WTOC has asked for any records pertaining to Monday’s court hearing but weren’t given them because the hearing was sealed. Just to be clear, this was not a criminal hearing and Leilani has not been charged with anything.

Quinton Simon's mom is stripped of her other two kids after being named a suspect in presumed death of missing Georgia toddler: Court documents say she's hooked on cocaine and cannabis

  • Court documents describe how Leilani Simon, 22, is a 'chronic, unrehabilitated substance abuser of cocaine and cannabis'
  • She allegedly admitted to using cocaine and tested positive for the drug at the birth of one of her three children
  • She is now the prime suspect in the disappearance and presumed death of her 1-year-old son, Quinton
  • Child Protective Services removed her two other children from her mother's custody on October 12

Simon's mother, Billie Jo Howell, had guardianship of her grandchildren. She had a tempered relationship with his mother, and had evicted her.

But, she was found by Child Protective Services in Chatham County, Georgia to have 'failed to provide adequate supervision.'

She is said to have left the children in their mother's care, but 'knew or should have known [her daughter] was unfit to provide proper care while the maternal grandmother traveled out of state, WTOC reports.

The children have now been placed in foster care while custody proceedings play out in the courts.

I agree with that decision. Grandma's lack of supervision led to this child's death. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't end up with some charges, too.

I agree the grandma has some serious responsibility here. So does the father of Skye. HE called off the sitter as far as we know. The articles say only Leilani is a suspect at this time and their prime one so maybe they know the bf had nothing to do with anything (MAYBE) but he still must have left the children with Leilani and been willing to do so having called off the sitter. If that is all true, both grandma and bf should probably be charged.

The direct result of his death was Leilani most likely and she deserves the brunt BUT grandma not only left for work but working out of state. She shouldn't have been. However, it does seem the baby Skye was at least in the custody of one of the parents, the bf or Leilani I mean. Maybe grandma arranged for bf to be sure all kids went to the sitter and especially the two boys since she had custody of them. So bf may be at fault BUT the kids were removed from grandma.

Apparently per the one article they have already been gone six days today and so they must have removed them pretty quickly or on an emergency basis and then held the hearing.

Very sad since from everything we see I wouldn't be so sure these kids are safe in the foster care system either and they will be missing those they know and likely separated at some point as they have different fathers so if some family member does get custody it will probably split up the remaining two.

I do think it likely grandma probably meant well but the choices she made were very poor ones. It sounds like Leilani has had many chances with rehab and a serious addiction and clearly that wasn't changing and she was still a serious addict and beyond poor mother imo most likely.

The Chatham County Police Department entered a new phase in the Quinton Simon case today as they began a search of the Waste Management landfill.
The Chatham County Police Department – with the assistance of the FBI – made the decision to search the landfill after evidence in the case led them to the conclusion that they could find Quinton’s remains at that location. Both agencies spent the last several days mobilizing the manpower and equipment needed for the search, which began this morning.
This operation will include a team of searchers daily from the Chatham County Police Department and FBI, along with dozens of support personnel. The FBI’s Evidence Response Team is leading the landfill search, which will be a precise and extensive recovery mission for Quinton’s remains and other potential evidence.
Quinton was 20-months old when he was reported missing on October 5, 2022, from his home.
Last week, Chatham County Police announced that they believe Quinton is deceased and named his mother, Leilani Simon, as the primary suspect in his disappearance and death.

Yes, grandma had custody, so she should be his primary caretaker and responsible party. She basically 'allowed' it to happen.

Per the grandma's unusual post I think it was on FB, she said he was at the landfill but her daughter doesn't remember doing such. LE too says he is at the landfill. My guess is they have surveillance/security footage showing her putting something big enough in the garbage, the timing was right and they don't see anything else on footage to show another time he could have wandered off or been disposed of. I don't think she admitted anything to them or she would have been immediately under arrest or under arrest by now I would think...?

A much slimmer possibility is she took him to the landfill in which case GPS or cell data may have shown the approximate location. I think he was disposed of though in the garbage at home. What is WRONG with people??!!

Also I am not convinced yet the bf was not part of the coverup at least. Waiting to hear further on him whether exonerated or charged as well.

Have to give this LE credit and they are utilizing the FBI and available help too. Kudos to them. Prayers this baby is found.

I don't disagree at all just saying the daughter is the one who committed the act. Grandma's decision does not exonerate the murderer who committed the act. Grandma yes is in her own mess of trouble. I would think.

She definitely should bear some responsibility in it since there was good reasoning of why she had custody and her daughter didn't. I think the daughter was also not supposed to be alone with the kids gma had custody of. She knew that.

It sounded that way or likely that way in the papers filed yep. I also believe however the bf probably knew it as well. I think there are at least three here who should be worried, not sure about the stepgrandpa, he likely had no idea bf left them with mom and called off sitter. And may not have any part in the custody or care so he may be safe from possible charges but the other three I don't think are.
