'It's going to be incredibly difficult:' Criminal justice professor discusses Quinton Simon search

Investigators are still searching a Chatham County landfill for the remains of 20-month-old Quinton Simon.

The FBI told reporters on Tuesday the search for Simon's remains will not be quick, not be easy and the outcome is uncertain.

While the FBI said they have identified a specific area of the landfill to search and no new trash is coming into that area, a criminal justice professor at Georgia Southern University told WJCL the search will still be difficult.

"I think it's going to be an incredibly difficult search, unfortunately," said Chad Posick, the interim department chair of Georgia Southern's Criminal Justice & Criminology Department. "The area itself is massive, so there's a lot of ground to cover and that's all complicated by the fact there is garbage and trash they are going to have to go around and underneath and, of course, that speeds up the decaying process."

He said on top of the sheer amount of waste investigators have to go through, they're also likely having to be careful with the items they're handling.

Why hasn’t anyone been arrested in connection to the disappearance of Quinton Simon?

Why isn’t Leilani Simon, the only suspect in this case, in jail?

Quite honestly it is likely because she’s not a threat to the general public, that’s the opinion of a law enforcement expert WSAV asked on Thursday.

It’s the picture that so many people are talking about, Leilani at a Tybee Island bar Tuesday night. Servers told WSAV that her mom Billie Joe Howell was with her. With a few other people, we’ve learned they ran up a tab over $300.

That happened while dozens of federal agents and Chatham County investigators continued their search for her son.

“Not necessarily the public pressure, but a deep desire to find that child’s body,” said Art Acevedo, a former police chief in Austin, Houston, and Miami.

Acevedo provided his insight on why police haven’t arrested anyone in Quinton’s case.

“A parent kills a child. More than likely is a low risk to a stranger due to the greater society,” Acevedo said.

An arrest could simply be on hold because police believe they will find Quinton’s body.

“If you think you have a lead with the bodies, that, like appears you do in your case, it’s important to be patient,” Acevedo said.

Chatham County police have said when they bring charges in Quiton’s case, there won’t be any doubt about them.

Seems mom might be quite the enabler here with this behavior. Hopefully she's trying to get info out of her, but i suppose that is not the case.

A $300 tab when this baby is missing??? :thud:
What is the part about "with other people".

Probably true but could be a way of making the story the truth where the other people ran up the bulk of the bill with drinks or food. Kind of an odd thing to be in there.

EXCLUSIVE: 'She's on her own in this mess.' Missing Quinton Simon's uncle says he does NOT support his prime suspect sister after she was seen slamming shots at a beach bar - as cops release photos of search for her 18-month-old son in a landfill

  • Leilani Simon is the main suspect in the disappearance of her 18-month-old son Quinton Simon, who vanished on October 5
  • While FBI agents searched a landfill for his body Tuesday, Leilani was with her mother Billie Jo getting drunk at Sting Ray's, a beach bar on Tybee Island
  • Her brother Joe Swain said in a Facebook message, 'I don't side with my sister at all. She's on her own in this mess'
  • However, Swain defended his mother, calling her a 'loving and caring woman with a beautiful heart'
  • Police have already called the bar demanding the footage and it's unclear why they have yet to arrest Leilani, 22

To me that says a lot. I do think grandma probably meant well although her choices were not the best. She likely counted on the children would be with the sitter and not alone with Leilani.

What the brother says though is about her and two friends getting her out and where is the mention of the daughter? Was she partying with her daughter or not?

I'm still thinking the mom knows far more about the situation than she is willing to admit and is having a hard time thinking her daughter could have possibly had anything to do with the baby's disappearance. I do get it, but time to get to what happened. Ignorance is bliss sometimes and I hope that is all that is happening here.

There's definitely pics of them together there, whether they were actually partying or not. $300 tab is quite a bit for even 4 people

This is a really good article because it’s Exactly what I’ve been told by detectives before. If the person isn’t a threat to society, they tend to leave them out until they gather the evidence they need.

There probably are pics. I only saw the one of the daughter I think it was and it didn't really show anything and then been busy since.

Out for dinner recently and my daughter bought for four people and it was well over $100 with a tip. She and I had one drink each, nothing extravagant, four entrees, no appetizers. So it doesn't take much. I'd say if they had apps and each had a drink or two they'd be at that point with a nice tip. And this is Tybee Island not the midwest...

BUT it could all be true too with tons of shots and drinks, I don't know.

If the mom knows more I doubt it was until after the fact and I tend to believe LE wouldn't share all with her. I mean she is losing/maybe lost the kids for good and is likely a possibility for charges too for neglect if nothing else.

I do think she meant well but I think she let her hope her daughter would change and her blinders go too far. Someone likely had to work but choosing something states away also was not very wise. when SHE had custody.

It says in articles I've read that people were reporting they were plowing through shots and getting very noisy, but I only take that somewhat seriously, but I also have no reason to not believe it with the pics that have been posted.

And that is why I do blame grandma is that she is the one that had custody and knows her daughter lost custody and the reasons why. She got custody from her daughter fot a reason AND wanted to kick her daughter and get bf out.

I haven't looked up the bar. I heard the name but forget. I wouldn't doubt drinks are $7 to $10 a crack. Maybe not but it is a destination area. It really depends on what you have and where you are.
Then you have tipping. And then there is food. IF that was ordered.

If you go somewhere like Olive Garden or Applebee's or Chi Chi's etc and pick one of their advertised drinks or jumbo drinks, it can be upward of $10 a drink and if/or yoShu drink top shelf liquor, it adds up too.

I wouldn't call five or six drinks per person over a few hours getting plastered. It would be over driving limit. But again the point of inthoxication would depend on alcohol content, hours there and food if any.

I don't have more than one if we go out if I have to drive. If I am riding, I have two MAYBE. Haven't played bingo in a few years and then I may have three tall weak ones I let the ice melt in over three or four hours AND we always walked, taxied or my SIL who doesn't drink would drive.

Most of this doesn't overly upset me other than they should have expected it would hit the news, etc. since it is one of the biggest attention cases online right now. The part I don't like is the daughter. And mom and daughter being together if that is the case. The daughter as the named suspect/POI who probably killed her own child I have real issue with partying in public when her baby is being searched for!

Grandma if friends encouraged her to get some relief, I can almost understand but again not necessarily a good choice. Invite her to your home and have drinks. and dinner. Would have been better. Inviting or taking the daughter with is what I have more of an issue with AND her choosing to go.

IF this was a way to get her to talk, I'd understand more but again I kind of doubt LE is trusting grandma with much or to do such. She may be trying to on her own though... All pretty unlikely.

The son stuck up for his mother but not his sister. That says a little bit to me.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Chatham County Police say they arrested three people outside of the home of missing 1-year-old Quinton Simon.

Police say they were called out twice Friday night to Buckhalter Road for complaints of people being disorderly. Three people were blocking the driveway of the toddler’s home, preventing people from being able to leave, according to officers.

Officials say the three people refused to move out of the roadway, so they arrested William Garrett, Wanda Boatwright, and John Boatwright.

All three are charged with disorderly conduct.

I do not agree with the protestors in these cases. Yeah there is a right to protest but they are helping nothing and imo are just trying to get noticed. And they are crossing the line and when they do, they should be arrested.

When the idiots were up the road here, I kept thinking how lush my yard would be because I would have to install motion detector activated lawn watering if they were in my yard. They were pizzing off the entire neighborhood with their antics.

They probably would have destroyed your watering system and sued you.
