This is absolutely awful. The father's mom died last week. He lost both parents in a week. I do wonder if Quinton's mother had something to do with these deaths too since they believe she killed Quinton. It seems too coincidental.

BOTH parents??

I can't say the thought didn't cross my mind with this hit and run of the grandfather. So it is the paternal grandfather? I thought it might be grandma's ex-husband, a maternal grandfather. Because the guy she is with is a step-grandpa. I mean look at how threatening grandma was to the babysitter even KNOWING she was on camera. It is probably that fact that kept her from totally losing it and striking the sitter....

Georgia police still searching for missing 20-month-old baby 1 month after disappearance

Last week marked one month since 20-month-old Quinton Simon went missing. Police believe the little boy’s body is in a landfill.

The search for him is the most extensive in the history of the Chatham County Police Department.

The case, which started as a report of a kidnapping is now a criminal investigation. Quinton’s mom Leilani, who called 9-1-1 to report her son missing, is the only person police have named as a suspect.

The search for Quinton and his case involves over 100 people, police told WSAV. Leilani remains the only suspect, who we saw on Friday, sitting out in the front yard of the family’s home, face to face with the protestors calling for her to be arrested.

While I am not in agreement with what the protestors are doing, what is wrong with this MOTHER??? No shame at all it seems anyhow. And WHY is she still under this roof?

I guess I had better stop there.

I pray they find this child.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WSAV) — Stormy weather put a halt to the search to find the remains of a Chatham County toddler who vanished more than a month ago.

Authorities say agents will pick back up combing through the landfill and looking for any signs of Quinton Simon’s body on Monday. It has been 37 days since the 20-month-old little boy has been seen.

"Today we begin another week of searching the landfill for Quinton Simon.

The photos and videos we’ve shared over the last four weeks show you what a massive – yet, painstaking – effort this has been for every single person involved. We have asked the teams on this search to endure the physical, mental and emotional burden of reporting to this landfill day after day – knowing that the chances of finding Quinton’s remains are low. And, we are proud of every member of the Chatham County Police Department, FBI, GBI, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources who has performed this duty with unmatched professionalism.

At this point, we do not have a scheduled end date for the landfill search. Meanwhile, our investigative team continues working diligently to uncover and collect every piece of evidence relevant in this case.

We remain committed to keeping you updated about our search for Quinton, and we promise we will continue to share important developments as quickly as we can."

Brett Buffington, the lead investigative reporter at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia, joined “NewsNation Live” Thursday to give details on the current state of the case.

Buffington explained that, although investigators are more than a month into the search for the boy’s body, and there has been outrage from the community, police have not made criminal charges because they’re working the case.

“They don’t want to prematurely charge anyone in this case,” Buffington said Thursday. “The police chief told me, when they file those charges, they want to make sure they stick.”

As for Leilani Simon’s boyfriend, Daniel Youngkin, who was the last person to see Quinton Simon, according to police reports, Buffington said he has packed up and left town.

“The only known address we have for him is in Dunn, North Carolina — just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina,” Buffington said before adding that Youngkin had been arrested at least twice in the past.

“So far, since Oct. 5, we have not seen Daniel Youngkin.”

Despite the lack of substantial evidence thus far, however, CCPD officials said they are devoted to continuing until they find Simon’s remains.

“At this point, we do not have a scheduled end date for the landfill search. Meanwhile, our investigative team continues working diligently to uncover and collect every piece of evidence relevant in this case.” CCPD tweeted Monday.

I know they can't keep him without cause but I'd think they would keep tabs on him somehow...

The fact they are keeping up the search and don't have an end date is admirable but when and what will have them call it?

They used to be able to somewhat if I recall go by dates meaning if they started running into newspapers and mail dated before the date of his disappearance, they have dug past where they would likely find someone. However, nowadays with recycling, what is the likelihood of finding a dated article? Everything I can think of would be recycled, an envelope, a receipt, a can from a canned good (and that date wouldn't be a current date anyhow), milk container (at least that would be in the month's range)... All recyclable...

It is great they called a suspect or POI right away with the mom but one would almost expect action or an arrest after that before long. Kind of unusual. It perhaps though did help them take the other kids to ensure their safety maybe...

Quinton Simon's babysitter hosts candlelight vigil in his honor

Quinton Simon’s babysitter held a candlelight vigil at her home Friday night, just feet from where Quinton was last seen.

Diane McCarta was Quinton’s babysitter for 10 months, but since October 5 -- when he disappeared -- it's not been the same.

“We think about him every day. We pray for him. It's been really hard to come outside and look that way and not see Quinton,” McCarta told WJCL.

“I feel like that Quinton deserves this. I feel like he deserves to have something done in his name. And it's always good when you can get together and pray,” said McCarta.

While police weren't stationed for the vigil, they were seen lurking near the group. There's no wonder why. The last 44 days have been difficult for everyone living on Buckhalter Road.

“We've been through things. I just think it's awesome that so many people have love in their hearts. And they can come together and show love for Quinton the way they are,” McCarta said.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga (WSAV) — Leilani Simon, the 22-year-old Chatham County woman who reported the disappearance of her 20-month-old son, Quinton Simon, in early October, has been arrested in connection to the case this afternoon.

Simon has been charged with murder in connection with the disappearance and death of her son, Quinton Simon.

On November 21, the Chatham County Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation held a press conference after the arrest took place. According to Chief Jeff Hadley, remains were found in a landfill on Friday, November 18 and, following testing, it was confirmed that the remains were human.

Chief Hadley added that additional tests were being conducted, but he believes that the remains found were that of Quinton Simon. Additional testing will be required to confirm the identity of the remains.

Wow. I worked late afternoon til late evening and missed this news. So happy to hear it. Just finished watching the PC.

She is also charged with perjury or obstruction or some such for lying.

This department and all agencies assisting is impressive and this chief so admirable and committed or so he strikes me. I liked his remark that she doesn't deserve a Thanksgiving. The way he thanked the local press too at the end was notable. Local press.

I've never seen a landfill search where I believed they would likely find something until this one. I still think they have video or some proof this is where he went. I think they have Leilani on video.

Not only did she kill her child but then she threw him away like garbage. A baby, an adorable boy. And grandma? She did leave this child in at least the couple's care...

He also says no other arrests anticipated or some such. I still want to know what the bf knew or if he helped cover. Maybe he cooperated and will or something.

The way this woman lied and talked publicly and partied and actually thought people would believe her lies? I don't think anyone did.

It seems nothing was going to stop the enabling but maybe this will. However, I wouldn't be surprised if grandma sends her commissary money and defends her. I hope not.

I am going to guess they are going to or have kept looking and will pull garbage belonging to Leilani possibly near the discovery, mail, etc. which further would show it was their garbage along with I think is likely home video footage from the neighborhood.

They committed to it, seemed to KNOW he was there and they FOUND him. Kudos!

RIP baby boy. You should be here and shouldn't have been treated that way but you will see justice.

What great news!!!

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A bond hearing for Leilani Simon who is accused of murdering her 20-month-old son is set for Wednesday at 11 a.m.

One day before the Thanksgiving holiday which Chatham County Police Chief Jeff Hadley said she doesn’t deserve to celebrate.

Leilani reported Quinton missing from their home on Buckhalter Road back on Oct. 5. His disappearance has had people in the community and around the country emotional and wanting justice for the toddler.

Tuesday, justice felt a step a closer some when Leilani was arrested facing charges of concealing a death, false statements, false report of a crime, and murder.

Speaking to WTOC by phone on Tuesday, Simon’s mother, Billie Howell, was too emotional to discuss the case and handed the phone to a family friend. The friend, who has not been identified, told the outlet that Simon checked herself into rehab in the weeks before her arrest.

When Howell heard that Simon was leaving the facility, she “had to make one of the hardest decisions of her life, and call the FBI agents and let them know that she was signing herself out … and that she was going to be a flight risk.”

At the FBI’s request, Howell picked Simon up from the treatment center herself.

“They asked her to buy some time. So, she went and picked up Leilani’s belongings from another center, and then she took Leilani to have her last free meal,” the friend explained.

The pair then went to the FBI office in Savannah, where Simon was arrested a few hours later.
